Abstract

Blood glucose level measurement includes a light source configured to irradiate light to a subject; a monochrome part configured to separate wavelength components of the light that is reflected and scattered from the subject; a light receiver configured to receive the light transmitted via the monochrome part and to generate electrical signals based on the received light; and a processor configured to extract information on the blood glucose level of the subject based on a frequency shift of the light due to the Raman effect.

Claims (22)

1 . A method for measuring blood glucose level using a wearable apparatus, comprising:

irradiating, by a light source, light to a subject at a predetermined output for a predetermined duration for calibration;

generating, by a light receiver, electrical signals representative of a Raman spectrum of the light that is reflected and scattered from the subject;

determining, by a processor, an intensity and an exposure duration for the light to be irradiated by the light source to subsequently measure the blood glucose level of the subject based on a peak corresponding to a specific Raman shift of the Raman spectrum acquired via the light receiver during the calibration;

irradiating, by the light source, the light to the subject at the intensity and the exposure duration determined during the calibration;

separating, by a monochrome part, wavelength components of the light that is reflected and scattered from the subject;

generating, by the light receiver, electric signals representative of the Raman spectrum based on light transmitted via the monochrome part; and

analyzing, by the processor, the electrical signals to extract information on the blood glucose level of the subject based on the Raman spectrum,

wherein the light source, the monochrome part, the light receiver, and the processor are packaged within the wearable apparatus.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the light source irradiates a near-infrared (NIR) ray or a mid-infrared (MIR) ray.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a glucose level in an interstitial fluid is measured based on ratios of areas of (a) a peak at 1450 cm −1 , (b) a peak at 1660 cm −1 , and (c) a peak at 1125 cm −1 .

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the light is irradiated on a wrist of the subject.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the light is irradiated on an ankle of the subject.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the light is irradiated on a finger of the subject.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the light is irradiated on a waist area of the subject.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the light is irradiated on a chest area of the subject.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the light is irradiated on a neck of the subject.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the light is irradiated on an arm of the subject.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the light is irradiated on a thigh of the subject.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the light is irradiated on a head of the subject.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the peak corresponding to the specific Raman shift is at 1450 cm −1 .

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the calibration is performed in response to the processor determining that the wearable apparatus is mounted on a body of the subject.
