Abstract

Systems and methods for providing access to media content by connecting, to a public device, a private device that has an installed application associated with the media content. A media guidance application may receive a communication from a private device, running a private interface application, requesting to access content using the public device. In response, the media guidance application may retrieve, at the public device, a public interface application associated with the private interface application, from a content provider of the content. The private interface application may be configured to control a graphical user interface of the public interface application. Accordingly, the user may be able to access content via the public device when the private device is within a predetermined proximity to the public device.

Claims (61)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a first and second request from a first and second private device respectively, to display content from the first and second private devices on the public device, wherein the first request is for a different type of connection than the second request;

determining an allocation of a first and a second portion on the public device, wherein the first portion is allocated for displaying content from the first private device and the second portion is allocated for displaying content from the second private device and the determination of the allocation comprises:

determining a level of importance associated with the content from the first and second private devices; and

allocating a larger portion of the public display to the content with the higher level of importance and a portion smaller than the larger portion of the public display to the content with the lower level of importance; and

displaying the content with the higher level of importance in the larger portion and the content with the lower level of importance in the portion smaller than the larger portion.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the first request is for a mirroring type of connection; and

in response to determining that the first request is for the mirroring type of connection:

transmitting to the first private device a mirrored version of a graphical user interface; and

configuring the mirrored version of the graphical user interface such that it can be displayed on the first private device by a private interface application associated with the first private device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the type of connection associated with the second request is for a connection that uses a public interface application stored on the second private device for transferring content from the second private device to the public device.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

retrieving the public interface application from a source associated with the content that is to be displayed by the second private device on the public device; and

configuring the retrieved public interface application to be installed on the second private device.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the importance level of content from the first private device is higher than the importance level of content from the second private device; and

displaying the content from the first private device in the larger portion of the public display in response to determining that the importance level of content from the first private device is higher than the importance level of content from the second private device.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising, increasing a resolution, from a current resolution, of the larger portion of the public display for displaying content from the first private device.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the content from the first private and second private device have a same importance level; and

in response determining that the content from the first private and second private device have the same importance level:

allocating a symmetrical portion of the public display to content from the first and second private devices.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining that the content from the first private device is tagged with an importance level; and

in response to determining that the content from the first private device is tagged with an importance level, using the tagged importance level in determining the allocation of the public display for displaying the content from the first private device.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

determining that the second private device is within a predetermined proximity from the public device; and

in response to determining that the second private device is within the predetermined proximity from the public device, allowing the second private device to control a graphical user interface of the public device.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the graphical user interface of the public device may be controlled via a public interface application stored on the second private device.

11. A system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

receive a first and second request from a first and second private device respectively, to display content from the first and second private devices on the public device, wherein the first request is for a different type of connection than the second request;

determine an allocation of a first and a second portion on the public device, wherein the first portion is allocated for displaying content from the first private device and the second portion is allocated for displaying content from the second private device and the determination of the allocation comprises:

determining a level of importance associated with the content from the first and second private devices; and

allocating a larger portion of the public display to the content with the higher level of importance and a portion smaller than the larger portion of the public display to the content with the lower level of importance; and

displaying the content with the higher level of importance in the larger portion and the content with the lower level of importance in the portion smaller than the larger portion.

12. The system of claim 11 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to:

determine that the first request is for a mirroring type of connection; and

in response to determining that the first request is for the mirroring type of connection:

transmit to the first private device a mirrored version of a graphical user interface; and

configure the mirrored version of the graphical user interface such that it can be displayed on the first private device by a private interface application associated with the first private device.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the type of connection associated with the second request is for a connection that uses a public interface application stored on the second private device for transferring content from the second private device to the public device.

14. The system of claim 13 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to:

retrieve the public interface application from a source associated with the content that is to be displayed by the second private device on the public device; and

configure the retrieved public interface application to be installed on the second private device.

15. The system of claim 11 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to:

determine that the importance level of content from the first private device is higher than the importance level of content from the second private device; and

display the content from the first private device in the larger portion of the public display in response to determining that the importance level of content from the first private device is higher than the importance level of content from the second private device.

16. The system of claim 15 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to increase a resolution, from a current resolution, of the larger portion of the public display for displaying content from the first private device.

17. The system of claim 11 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to:

determine that the content from the first private and second private device have a same importance level; and

in response determining that the content from the first private and second private device have the same importance level:

allocate a symmetrical portion of the public display to content from the first and second private devices.

18. The system of claim 11 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to:

determine that the content from the first private device is tagged with an importance level; and

in response to determining that the content from the first private device is tagged with an importance level, use the tagged importance level in determining the allocation of the public display for displaying the content from the first private device.

19. The system of claim 11 further comprising, the control circuitry configured to:

determine that the second private device is within a predetermined proximity from the public device; and

in response to determining that the second private device is within the predetermined proximity from the public device, allow the second private device to control a graphical user interface of the public device.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the graphical user interface of the public device may be controlled via a public interface application stored on the second private device.
