Abstract

A computer-implemented method for providing variable rate application of crop inputs to an agricultural field includes determining an index value of biomass health for multiple regions in the agricultural field and determining, based on the index value for each of the multiple regions, a number of unique soil types in the agricultural field. The computer-implemented method also includes determining a distinctness of pairs of the unique soil types in the agricultural field, determining a statistical variation based on the distinctness of the pairs, and calculating, based on the statistical variation, a variable rate suitability score for the agricultural field relating to spatially varying a rate of application of one or more crop inputs to the agricultural field. The computer-implemented method then includes displaying the agricultural field along with the variable rate suitability score for the agricultural field.

where k 1 . . . k 3 are empirical constants; N is the number of unique soil types in the agricultural field; A x is an area of a portion of the agricultural field, which includes an x-th greatest percentage of the agricultural field in terms of surface area; D SN,x represents the distinctness between the pairs of soil types of the x-th and N-th areas of the agricultural field having distinct soil types; and c v (y) represents a coefficient of variation of argument y.

6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising generating management zones in the agricultural field, based on the soil types, in response to the variable rate suitability score for the agricultural field exceeding a threshold; and

wherein displaying the agricultural field includes displaying boundaries for the management zones to a user.

7 . The computer-implement method of claim 6 , wherein generating the management zones is further based on a set of secondary spatial characteristics; and

wherein the set of secondary spatial characteristics includes elevation, electrical conductivity, organic matter content, presence of tilling, presence of irrigation, reflectivity or characteristics derived from reflectivity, and/or thermal emissivity.

8 . The computer-implement method of claim 6 , further comprising:

receiving, by the agricultural intelligence computing device, from the user, a modification of a farm practice criterion associated with one of the management zones; and

applying the modified farm practice criterion to each location in said one of the management zones.

9 . The computer-implement method of claim 1 , wherein displaying the agricultural field includes displaying a map of multiple agricultural fields including said agricultural field, in which a graphical indication of the variable rate suitability score is visually associated with the agricultural field.

10 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising modifying operation of an agricultural implement, based on the variable rate suitability score, to change the rate of application of the one or more crop inputs to the agricultural field by the agricultural implement.

11 . A computer-implemented method associated with water management of an agricultural field, the method comprising:

obtaining, by an agricultural intelligence computing device, data from a memory, the data including yield data and weather data associated with an agricultural field;

generating, by the agricultural intelligence computing device, a water management map for the agricultural field, based on the obtained data;

estimating, by the agricultural intelligence computing device, a future water management loss, based on a predictive weather model and the water management map; and

recommending, by the agricultural intelligence computing device, based on the future water management loss, a water management action for the agricultural field.

12 . The computer-implement method of claim 11 , wherein obtaining the data includes prompting a user to enter or select certain criteria associated with the data; and

wherein the data further includes elevation data.

13 . The computer-implement method of claim 12 , further comprising:

displaying, by the agricultural intelligence computing device, the water management map to a user, the water management map including a legend which indicates color and/or patterns overlaid on the water management map indicative of water management loss for the agricultural field; and
