Abstract

Methods and systems for obtaining exhaust streams from wood drying processes and controlling emissions in exhaust streams from wood drying processes are provided. Methods and systems can include pre-treatment steps, such as removing particulate matter and/or heating a process exhaust stream from a wood dryer, in order to obtain an exhaust stream that is suitable for downstream recovery of terpenes from said exhaust stream. Exhaust streams can be contacted with a sorbent to remove volatile organic compounds, and other emissions, generating a purified air stream that is able to be released into the environment without further purification or oxidation.

Claims (26)

1 - 54 . (canceled)

55 . A system for treating an exhaust stream from a wood drying process, comprising:

an adsorber configured to contain an exhaust stream derived from a wood drying process and a sorbent suitable for capturing one or more chemical compounds within the exhaust stream;

a desorber in fluid communication with the adsorber, the desorber configured to release at least one of the one or more captured chemical compounds from the sorbent; and

a reactivator in fluid communication with the absorber, the desorber, or both the adsorber and the desorber, the reactivator configured to receive and contain a side stream of the sorbent and reactivate the sorbent within the side stream.

56 . The system of claim 55 , wherein the adsorber is configured to house a fluidized bed comprising the sorbent.

57 . The system of claim 55 , wherein the adsorber is configured to house two or more fluidized beds arranged in series or in parallel.

58 . The system of claim 55 , wherein spent sorbent is thermally treated within the reactivator.

59 . The system of claim 55 , further comprising a hopper, coupled to the adsorber, the hopper configured to provide sorbent to the adsorber.

60 . The system of claim 59 , wherein the hopper comprises an inlet configured to introduce dry air into the hopper to dry fresh sorbent stored within the hopper.

61 . The system of claim 55 , wherein the reactivator is not a regenerative thermal oxidizer.

62 . The system of claim 55 , wherein the adsorber is directly coupled to the desorber.

63 . The system of claim 55 , wherein the reactivator is directly coupled to the adsorber and the desorber.

64 . The system of claim 55 , wherein each chemical compound comprises one or more terpenes, formaldehyde, methanol, acetic acid, acetone, or fatty acids, and the desorber is configured to thermally desorb the captured one or more terpenes, formaldehyde, methanol, acetic acid, acetone, or fatty acids from the sorbent.

65 . A system for treating an exhaust stream from a wood drying process, comprising:

an adsorber configured to contain an exhaust stream derived from a wood drying process and a sorbent suitable for capturing one or more chemical compounds within the exhaust stream;

a desorber in fluid communication with the adsorber, the desorber configured to release at least one of the one or more captured chemical compounds from the sorbent; and

a reactivator in fluid communication with the absorber, the desorber, or both the adsorber and the desorber, the reactivator configured to receive and contain a side stream of the sorbent and reactivate the sorbent within the side stream.

66 . The system of claim 65 , wherein the adsorber is configured to house a fluidized bed comprising the sorbent.

67 . The system of claim 65 , wherein the adsorber is configured to house two or more fluidized beds arranged in series or in parallel.

68 . The system of claim 65 , wherein the adsorber comprises two or more adsorbers configured in series or in parallel.

69 . The system of claim 65 , wherein the desorber comprises two or more desorbers configured in series or in parallel.

70 . The system of claim 65 , wherein the reactivator comprises two or more reactivators configured in series or in parallel.

71 . The system of claim 65 , further comprising a separator upstream of the adsorber, the separator configured to remove one or more particulate matter from the exhaust stream prior to the exhaust stream entering the adsorber.

72 . The system of claim 71 , wherein the separator comprises one or more wet electrostatic precipitators (WESPs), dry electrostatic precipitators (DESPs), cyclones, bag filters, mist eliminators, wet venture scrubbers, mesh screens, perforated plate, or cyclonic separators.

73 . The system of claim 65 , further comprising one or more cooling devices downstream and in fluid communication with the desorber, each cooling device configured to condense one or more of the captured chemical compounds that are released from the sorbent.
