Abstract

A port placement guide may include a base, a member, and at least one tracking element. The base can be configured to couple to a surface of a patient at a preliminary port location for a robotic arm. The member can be coupled to the base and can comprise a first end and a second end opposite the first end. The at least one tracking element can be coupled to the member and can be configured to allow tracking of the member relative to the preliminary port location.

Claims (33)

1 . A surgical robotic system, comprising:

a tool driver to be coupled to a distal end of a robotic arm;

a tracking device operable to detect a tracking element at a port placement guide arranged at a port location; and

one or more processors configured to:

detect a position of the tracking element at the port location by using the tracking device to detect the tracking element; and

guide the robotic arm toward the determined position to couple the tool driver to a medical instrument at the port location.

2 . The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to generate a trajectory defining link movement of the robotic arm to couple the robotic arm to the medical instrument.

3 . The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the medical instrument comprises at least one of a cannula or a trocar.

4 . The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the distal end of the robotic arm is registered to the port location for guiding the robotic arm.

5 . The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the robotic arm engages with a docking feature of the medical instrument.

6 . The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to utilize the robotic arm to maneuver the medical instrument into engagement with or through a lumen of the port placement guide.

7 . The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , wherein movement of the robotic arm is constrained by a virtual fixture representing one or more regions in which the robotic arm does not interfere with access to other ports or robotic arm paths to the other ports.

8 . The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the tracking element comprises at least one of an infrared reflective material or an electromagnetic transmitter.

9 . The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are configured to detect an orientation of the tracking element at the port location and guide the robotic arm toward the determined orientation.

10 . The surgical robotic system of claim 1 , wherein a processor associated with the tracking device processes tracking data collected by the tracking device to determine the port location.

11 . A method, comprising:

detecting, via a tracking device operable to detect a tracking element at a port placement guide arranged at a port location, a position of a tracking element at a port location by using the tracking device to detect the tracking element; and

guiding a robotic arm toward the determined position to couple a tool driver, coupled to a distal end of the robotic arm, to a medical instrument at the port location.

12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

moving the robotic arm according to trajectory commands to couple the robotic arm to the medical instrument.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the distal end of the robotic arm is registered to the port location for guiding the robotic arm.

14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the robotic arm engages a docking feature of the port placement guide.

15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the robotic arm engages a clamp or snap of the medical instrument.

16 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

utilizing the robotic arm to maneuver the medical instrument into engagement with or through a lumen of the port placement guide.

17 . A non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions operable to cause one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

detecting, via a tracking device operable to detect a tracking element at a port placement guide arranged at a port location, a position of a tracking element at a port location by using the tracking device to detect the tracking element; and

guiding a robotic arm toward the determined position to couple a tool driver, coupled to a distal end of the robotic arm, to a medical instrument at the port location.

18 . The non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions of claim 17 , the operations further comprising:

constraining movement of the robotic arm by a virtual fixture representing one or more regions in which the robotic arm does not interfere with access to other ports or robotic arm paths to the other ports.

19 . The non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions of claim 17 , wherein the tracking element is arranged in a three-dimensional pattern.

20 . The non-transitory computer readable medium storing instructions of claim 17 , the operations further comprising:

detecting an orientation of the tracking element at the port location and guiding the robotic arm toward the determined orientation.
