Abstract

Diabetes management systems include an insulin delivery device and a monitoring device for detecting at least one characteristic relating to the insulin delivery device. Monitoring devices may comprise pen caps.

Claims (48)

20 . A diabetes management system, comprising:

an on-body unit configured to be worn on a skin surface of a user, the on-body unit comprising:

a glucose sensor configured to be in contact with a bodily fluid of the user and measure glucose levels of the user; and

sensor electronics coupled to the glucose sensor and configured to wirelessly transmit glucose data of the user;

a pen cap in wireless communication with the on-body unit and releasably coupleable to a manual insulin delivery device, the pen cap configured to:

receive glucose data of the user from the on-body unit;

detect a dosing action of the manual insulin delivery device; and

determine dosing data related to the detected dosing action, the dosing data comprising one or more of a dosing time, a dosing duration, or a dosing amount; and

a mobile device in wireless communication with the pen cap and comprising a display, the mobile device configured to perform operations comprising:

receiving the dosing data from the pen cap;

causing the dosing data to be displayed within a graphical user interface of the display; and

causing a dose recommendation to be displayed within the graphical user interface.

21 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the causing the dose recommendation to be displayed comprises providing the dose recommendation upon detection of a decapping event of the pen cap being released from the manual insulin delivery device.

22 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the causing the dose recommendation to be displayed comprises providing the dose recommendation upon receipt of a user interaction.

23 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the dosing action comprises at least one of a capping event of the pen cap being secured to the manual insulin delivery device or an uncapping event of the pen cap being released from the manual insulin delivery device.

24 . The system of claim 23 , wherein the pen cap is configured to infer one or more dosing actions responsive to one or more capping events, one or more uncapping events, or both.

25 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the pen cap is configured to provide a visual indication of a remaining amount of insulin within the manual insulin delivery device.

26 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the pen cap is configured to provide a visual indication of a time since a previously administered insulin dose.

27 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the pen cap is configured to provide an audible indication of the detected dosing action.

28 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the dose recommendation is based at least in part on the dosing data.

29 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the dose recommendation is based at least in part on the glucose data and the dosing data.

30 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the pen cap is configured to communicate with the mobile device via a Bluetooth protocol.

31 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the system is configured to determine a missed dose based at least in part on a time between successive dosing actions.

32 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the system is configured to provide a missed dose alarm if a time between successive dosing actions exceeds a predetermined threshold.

33 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the system is configured to determine a likelihood of a future hypoglycemic event for the user based at least in part on the glucose data and the dosing data.

34 . The system of claim 20 , wherein the system is configured to determine a predicted future glucose level of the user based at least in part on the glucose data and the dosing data.

35 . A method of managing diabetes, the method comprising:

receiving, by at least one processor, glucose data of a user from an on-body unit configured to be worn on a skin surface of the user, the on-body unit comprising:

a glucose sensor configured to be in contact with a bodily fluid of the user and measure glucose levels of the user; and

sensor electronics coupled to the glucose sensor and configured to wirelessly transmit glucose data of the user;

detecting, by a pen cap releasably coupleable to a manual insulin delivery device, a dosing action of the manual insulin delivery device;

determining, by the pen cap, dosing data related to the detected dosing action, the dosing data comprising one or more of a dosing time, a dosing duration, or a dosing amount;

receiving, by the at least one processor, the dosing data from the pen cap;

causing, by the at least one processor, the dosing data to be displayed within a graphical user interface of a mobile device; and

causing, by the at least one processor, a dose recommendation to be displayed within the graphical user interface of the mobile device.

36 . The method of claim 35 , further comprising determining the dose recommendation based at least in part on the glucose data and the dosing data.

37 . The method of claim 35 , further comprising detecting a missed dose based at least in part on a time between successive dosing actions exceeding a predetermined threshold.

38 . The method of claim 37 , further comprising providing a missed dose alarm when the missed dose is detected.

39 . A computer-readable storage medium storing instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

receiving glucose data of a user from an on-body unit configured to be worn on a skin surface of the user, the on-body unit comprising:

a glucose sensor configured to be in contact with a bodily fluid of the user and measure glucose levels of the user; and

sensor electronics coupled to the glucose sensor and configured to wirelessly transmit glucose data of the user;

detecting a dosing action of a manual insulin delivery device from a pen cap releasably coupleable to the manual insulin delivery device;

determining dosing data related to the detected dosing action, the dosing data comprising one or more of a dosing time, a dosing duration, or a dosing amount;

receiving the dosing data from the pen cap;

causing the dosing data to be displayed within a graphical user interface of a mobile device; and

causing a dose recommendation to be displayed within the graphical user interface of the mobile device.
