Abstract

In some embodiments, a method receives a plurality of representations of a relationship between bitrate and quality for a first portion of content. Representations in the plurality of representations are based on respective second portions of the content that is included in the first portion of the video. Clusters of the plurality of representations are generated and the clusters are analyzed to determine a first list of encoding operational points for respective clusters. The method analyzes the first list of encoding operational points for respective cluster to determine a second list of encoding operational points. The second list of encoding operational points is output for use in encoding the first portion of content.

Claims (62)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving a plurality of representations of a relationship between bitrate and quality for a first portion of content, wherein representations in the plurality of representations are based on respective second portions of the content that is included in the first portion of content;

generating clusters of the plurality of representations;

analyzing the clusters to determine a first list of encoding operational points for respective clusters;

analyzing the first list of encoding operational points for respective cluster to determine a second list of encoding operational points; and

outputting the second list of encoding operational points for use in encoding the first portion of content.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first portion of content comprises a chunk, and

a second portion of the content comprises a segment, wherein the chunk includes a plurality of segments.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein:

the segment comprises an independent analysis unit in which the segment can be decoded independently, and

the chunk comprises an independent encoding unit in which the second list of encoding operational points for an encoder are not changed to encode the chunk.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating clusters of the plurality of representations comprises:

analyzing the representations based on a clustering process to form the clusters, wherein each cluster includes one or more of the representations.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a representative relationship for respective clusters; and

analyzing the representative relationships for respective clusters to determine the first list of encoding operational points.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein:

a respective representative relationship represents the representations in a respective cluster, and

the respective representative relationship is analyzed instead of the representations in the cluster to determine the first list of encoding operational points.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the respective representative relationship is a representation in the cluster or a new representation that is generated from the representations in the cluster.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein analyzing the clusters to determine the first list of encoding operational points for respective clusters comprises:

determining a range that should include the encoding operational points in the first list of encoding operational points.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein determining the range comprises:

determining a first point;

determining a second point; and

determining encoding operational points in the first list of encoding operational points based on the first point and the second point.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein determining the range comprises:

determining a third point, wherein the third point is based on a rate of change of the representation, and wherein the first point and the second point include the third point.

11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein a condition relating to bitrate or quality is applied to determine the first point or the second point.

12 . The method of claim 9 , wherein determining encoding operational points comprises:

selecting encoding operational points based on an interval between encoding operational points from within the range.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein selecting encoding operational points comprises:

determining a constraint condition; and

selecting encoding operational points that meet the constraint condition.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the constraint condition is based on quality or bitrate.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein analyzing the first list of encoding operational points for respective representative relationships to determine the second list of encoding operational points comprises:

determining a weight for respective clusters;

applying the weight for respective clusters to the first list of encoding operational points for respective clusters to generate a first list of weighted encoding operational points; and

combining the first list of weighted encoding operational points for the clusters to determine the second list of encoding operational points.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein:

the weight for respective clusters is based on a number of representations found in respective clusters.

17 . The method of claim 1 , wherein analyzing the first list of encoding operational points for respective representative relationships to determine the second list of encoding operational points comprises:

determining a weight for respective clusters; and

selecting one of the first list of encoding operational points based on the weight for a cluster.

18 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon computer executable instructions, which when executed by a computing device, cause the computing device to be operable for:

receiving a plurality of representations of a relationship between bitrate and quality for a first portion of content, wherein representations in the plurality of representations are based on respective second portions of the content that is included in the first portion of content;

generating clusters of the plurality of representations;

analyzing the clusters to determine a first list of encoding operational points for respective clusters;

analyzing the first list of encoding operational points for respective cluster to determine a second list of encoding operational points; and

outputting the second list of encoding operational points for use in encoding the first portion of content.

19 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 , wherein:

the first portion of content comprises a chunk, and

a second portion of the content comprises a segment, wherein the chunk includes a plurality of segments.

20 . An apparatus comprising:

one or more computer processors; and

a computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions for controlling the one or more computer processors to be operable for:

receiving a plurality of representations of a relationship between bitrate and quality for a first portion of content, wherein representations in the plurality of representations are based on respective second portions of the content that is included in the first portion of content;

generating clusters of the plurality of representations;

analyzing the clusters to determine a first list of encoding operational points for respective clusters;

analyzing the first list of encoding operational points for respective cluster to determine a second list of encoding operational points; and

outputting the second list of encoding operational points for use in encoding the first portion of content.
