Abstract

An electrically isolating gasket is disclosed wherein a coating layer is disposed on at least one conductive surface, and in some embodiments, on all surfaces or at least all of the conductive surfaces. The electrically isolating gasket includes a core gasket component, a ring seal component, and a non-conductive inner seal component. The coating layer can be, for example, polyimide, polyamide, ceramic, and aluminum oxide.

Claims (20)

1. An electrically isolating gasket comprising:

a metallic gasket core, the metallic gasket core having a disc shape and including opposed faces separated by an axial height and an inner core surface extending along the axial height between the opposed faces having a first, non-linear shape, wherein the metallic gasket core includes a radially outer groove and a radially inner groove in each of the opposed surfaces of the metallic gasket, and wherein the radially outer groove and the radially inner groove of each of the opposed surfaces are aligned; and

a coating formed on all of the surfaces of the metallic gasket core including the opposed faces and the inner core surface, the coating comprising a dielectric material.

2. The electrically isolating gasket of claim 1 , wherein the metallic gasket core component is made from stainless steel.

3. The electrically isolating gasket of claim 1 , wherein the coating material is selected from the group consisting of polyimide, polyamide, ceramic, and aluminum oxide.

4. The electrically isolating gasket of claim 3 , wherein the coating material is polyimide.

5. The electrically isolating gasket of claim 1 , wherein the coating comprising the dielectric material on all of the surfaces is a continuous coating.

6. The electrically isolating gasket of claim 5 , wherein the coating has a substantially uniform thickness.

7. The electrically isolating gasket of claim 6 , wherein the thickness is less than 6 mm.

8. The electrically isolating gasket of claim 7 , wherein the thickness is less than 0.381 mm.

9. The electrically isolating gasket of claim 7 , wherein the thickness is less than 0.127 mm.

10. The electrically isolating gasket of claim 1 , wherein a sealing mechanism is disposed in each of the radially outer groove in the first axial surface and the radially outer groove of in the second axial surface.

11. The electrically isolating gasket of claim 1 , wherein a lip seal is disposed in each of the radially inner groove in the first axial surface and the radially inner groove of the second axial surface.

12. The electrically isolating gasket of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the coating on the surfaces of the grooves is less than a thickness of the coating on the other surfaces of the core gasket component.

13. The electrically isolating gasket of claim 1 , wherein the electrically isolating gasket is free of glass reinforced epoxy.

14. An electrically isolating gasket comprising:

a retainer formed from a conductive material, the retainer having opposed axial faces and a concave shaped inner retainer surface forming a groove extending between the opposed axial faces;

a metallic ring seal having an outer ring surface with a convex shape to cooperatively engage the concave shaped inner retainer surface forming a groove; and

a coating formed on all surfaces of the retainer formed from the conductive material including the opposed axial faces and the concave shaped inner retainer surface forming the groove and the metallic ring seal, wherein the coating comprises a continuously applied dielectric material.

15. The electrically isolating gasket of claim 14 , comprising an inner seal element cooperatively engaged to the metallic ring seal such that the metallic ring seal is between the concave shaped inner retainer surface of the retainer and the inner seal element, such that the inner seal element forms a primary seal and the metallic ring seal forms a secondary seal.
