Abstract

Provided is a system and method for providing a non-binding allograft subtalar joint implant for surgical implant into a person's foot proximate to the ankle. This system for repair includes at least one sterile non-binding allograft subtablar joint implant provided as a pre-formed allograft rod plug “ARP” having a diameter about equal to an average width of a canal between a person's talus and calcaneus bones, the ARP being resiliently compressible and flexible. When snuggly disposed between the person's talus and calcaneus bones, the ARP compresses during normal use of the person's foot and maintains the canal in an anatomically correct alignment and reduces a tendency for abnormal motion between the person's talus and calcaneus bones. An associated method of use is also provided.

Claims (42)

1 - 39 . (canceled)

40 . A method of providing a pre-formed allograft rod plug into a joint within a patient, the method comprising:

surgically accessing the joint, the joint at least partially defined by two adjacent bones;

determining a width of the joint;

disposing a spacer within the joint;

evaluating a fit of the spacer within the joint;

removing the spacer; and

disposing the pre-formed allograft rod plug within the joint, the pre-formed allograft rod plug having a transverse dimension corresponding to a transverse dimension of the spacer.

41 . The method of claim 40 , wherein the joint is within a hand of the patient or a foot of the patient.

42 . The method of claim 40 , wherein disposing the spacer within the joint comprises:

inserting a guide wire into the joint; and

inserting the spacer over the guide wire and into the joint.

43 . The method of claim 40 , wherein disposing the pre-formed allograft rod plug within the joint comprises inserting the pre-formed allograft rod plug over a guide wire and into the joint.

44 . The method of claim 40 , wherein the pre-formed allograft rod plug is disposed within the joint via a delivery cannula.

45 . The method of claim 40 , further comprising trimming the pre-formed allograft rod plug from an initial transverse dimension to the transverse dimension corresponding to the transverse dimension of the spacer.

46 . The method of claim 40 , wherein the pre-formed allograft rod plug is resiliently compressible and flexible.

47 . The method of claim 40 , further comprising the step of forming the pre-formed allograft rod plug, the forming step comprising forming a sheet of dermis into a rod having a transverse dimension corresponding to the transverse dimension of the spacer.

48 . The method of claim 47 , further comprising cutting the rod to a desired length.

49 . The method of claim 40 , further comprising:

packaging the pre-formed allograft rod plug; and

lyophilizing the pre-formed allograft rod plug such that the moisture remaining therein is between 4% and 6%.

50 . The method of claim 40 , further comprising preparing the pre-formed allograft rod plug by processing a dermis to at least partially remove one or more cellular components while leaving an extracellular matrix and scaffold.

51 . The method of claim 40 , further comprising preparing the pre-formed allograft rod plug by lyophilizing a dermis to at least partially remove moisture residue from the dermis.

52 . The method of claim 51 , wherein the moisture residue remaining in the dermis after it is lyophilized is between 10% and 15%.

53 . A method of providing a pre-formed allograft rod plug into a joint within a patient, the method comprising:

surgically accessing a canal within a foot of the patient at a position proximate to a talus bone and a calcaneus bone, the canal having a width between the talus bone and the calcaneus bone;

inserting a guide wire into the canal;

inserting a spacer over the guide wire and into the canal, the spacer having a spacer transverse dimension;

evaluating a fit of the spacer;

removing the spacer;

selecting a pre-formed allograft rod plug having a transverse dimension approximately equal to the spacer transverse dimension;

inserting the pre-formed allograft rod plug into the canal in a position adjacent to the talus bone and the calcaneus bone;

evaluating a fit of the pre-formed allograft rod plug; and

surgically closing access to the canal.

54 . The method of claim 53 , further comprising the step of forming the pre-formed allograft rod plug, the forming step comprising forming a sheet of dermis into a rod having a transverse dimension corresponding to the transverse dimension of the spacer.

55 . The method of claim 54 , further comprising cutting the rod to a desired length.

56 . The method of claim 53 , further comprising:

packaging the pre-formed allograft rod plug; and

lyophilizing the pre-formed allograft rod plug such that the moisture remaining therein is between 4% and 6%.

57 . The method of claim 53 , further comprising preparing the pre-formed allograft rod plug by processing a dermis to at least partially remove one or more cellular components while leaving an extracellular matrix and scaffold.

58 . The method of claim 53 , further comprising preparing the pre-formed allograft rod plug by lyophilizing a dermis to at least partially remove moisture residue from the dermis.

59 . The method of claim 58 , wherein the moisture residue remaining in the dermis after it is lyophilized is between 10-15%.
