Abstract

In an audio device that includes a plurality of input controls, mixing circuitry, a left speaker, and a right speaker, a desired balance, between a first audio signal and a second audio signal, may be determined according to the plurality of input controls. A desired volume, of the first audio signal and the second audio signal, may be determined according to the plurality of input controls. A virtualization, of one or both of the first audio signal and the second audio signal, may be determined according to a head related transfer function. A stereo signal may be generated by combining the first audio signal and the second audio signal according to the desired balance, the desired volume, and the virtualization. A left channel of the stereo signal may be outputted to the left speaker and a right channel of the stereo signal may be outputted to the right speaker.

Claims (36)

1. An audio device comprising:

a plurality of input controls;

mixing circuitry;

a left speaker; and

a right speaker;

wherein the mixing circuitry is configured to:

determine a desired balance, between a first type of audio signal and a second type of audio signal, according to the plurality of input controls;

determine a desired volume, of the first type of audio signal and the second type of audio signal, according to the plurality of input controls;

determine a virtualization, of one or both of the first type of audio signal and the second type of audio signal, according to a head related transfer function;

generate a stereo signal by combining the first type of audio signal and the second type of audio signal according to the desired balance, the desired volume, and the virtualization;

output a left channel of the stereo signal to the left speaker; and

output a right channel of the stereo signal to the right speaker.

2. The audio device of claim 1 , wherein the mixing circuitry is configured to determine or adjust one or more of the desired balance, the desired volume, and the stereo signal based on a data set characterizing one or more of the audio device, a component comprising the mixing circuitry, a component comprising the left speaker, and a component comprising the right speaker.

3. The audio device of claim 2 , wherein the data set is pre-programmed and/or determined based on testing of the audio device.

4. The audio device of claim 2 , wherein the mixing circuitry is configured to dynamically determine at least a portion of the data set based on testing of the audio device.

5. The audio device of claim 1 , wherein the mixing circuitry is configured to determine, based on a user input, a volume setting for use when outputting the stereo signal.

6. The audio device of claim 5 , wherein the mixing circuitry is configured to apply the volume setting such that volume adjustments based on the volume setting are time synchronized to the combining the first type of audio signal and the second type of audio signal.

7. The audio device of claim 5 , wherein the mixing circuitry is configured to apply a delay to applying of the volume setting and/or the combining of the first type of audio signal and the second type of audio signal, based on one or more pre-defined delay time values.

8. The audio device of claim 5 , wherein the mixing circuitry is configured to use a plurality of ramp up or down steps, to effectuate gradual or stepped changes, when applying of the volume setting and/or the combining of the first type of audio signal and the second type of audio signal.

9. The audio device of claim 1 , wherein the first type of audio signal comprises game audio and the second type of audio signal comprises chat audio.

10. The audio device of claim 1 , wherein the mixing circuitry comprises a signal processor.

11. A method for processing audio in an audio device that comprises a plurality of input controls, mixing circuitry, a left speaker, and a right speaker, the method comprising:

determining, by the mixing circuitry, a desired balance, between a first type of audio signal and a second type of audio signal, according to the plurality of input controls;

determining, by the mixing circuitry, a desired volume, of the first type of audio signal and the second type of audio signal, according to the plurality of input controls;

determining, by the mixing circuitry, a virtualization, of one or both of the first type of audio signal and the second type of audio signal, according to a head related transfer function;

generating, by the mixing circuitry, a stereo signal by combining the first type of audio signal and the second type of audio signal according to the desired balance, the desired volume, and the virtualization;

outputting a left channel of the stereo signal to the left speaker; and

outputting a right channel of the stereo signal to the right speaker.

12. The method of claim 11 , comprising determining or adjusting one or more of the desired balance, the desired volume, and the stereo signal based on a data set characterizing one or more of the audio device, a component comprising the mixing circuitry, a component comprising the left speaker, and a component comprising the right speaker.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the data set is pre-programmed and/or determined based on testing of the audio device.

14. The method of claim 12 , comprising dynamically determining at least a portion of the data set based on testing of the audio device.

15. The method of claim 11 , comprising determining, based on a user input, a volume setting for use when outputting the stereo signal.

16. The method of claim 15 , comprising applying the volume setting such that volume adjustments based on the volume setting are time synchronized to the combining the first type of audio signal and the second type of audio signal.

17. The method of claim 15 , comprising applying a delay to applying of the volume setting and/or the combining of the first type of audio signal and the second type of audio signal, based on one or more pre-defined delay time values.

18. The method of claim 15 , comprising using a plurality of ramp up or down steps, to effectuate gradual or stepped changes, when applying of the volume setting and/or the combining of the first type of audio signal and the second type of audio signal.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first type of audio signal comprises game audio and the second type of audio signal comprises chat audio.
