Abstract

A smoke detector includes detector mount that can define a cavity into which air can flow to a detector component of a detector body engaged with the detector mount. The detector mount can include a base, e.g., that defines a cavity into which air can flow and/or into which a portion of the detector body can extend, and an intermediate component that can removably engage with both the base and the detector body so the base is engaged with the detector body via the intermediate component. The intermediate component can include fins or other features to direct air flow in the cavity to one or more portions of the detector body.

Claims (25)

1. A smoke detector comprising:

a body including an upper portion configured to face a surface on which the smoke detector is mounted and a spiral ramp positioned below and extending away from the upper portion, the spiral ramp configured to engage with an indicator to cause movement of the indicator toward and away from the upper portion in response to movement of the indicator relative to the spiral ramp.

2. The smoke detector of claim 1 , wherein the body includes a detector component to detect an environmental condition at the smoke detector.

3. The smoke detector of claim 1 , further comprising a shaft adjacent the spiral ramp that extends away from the upper portion, the shaft configured to guide at least one of pivotal and linear movement of the indicator along the spiral ramp.

4. The smoke detector of claim 3 , wherein the spiral ramp extends around the shaft.

5. The smoke detector of claim 4 , wherein the spiral ramp is a first spiral ramp, the body including a second spiral ramp on a side of the shaft that is opposite the first spiral ramp.

6. The smoke detector of claim 1 , wherein the spiral ramp is a first spiral ramp, the body including a second spiral ramp configured to engage with the indicator.

7. The smoke detector of claim 1 , wherein the indicator is configured to prevent assembly of the body with at least one other part of the smoke detector if a battery is absent.

8. The smoke detector of claim 1 , wherein the indicator includes a cam follower configured to engage the spiral ramp to enable the indicator during installation or removal of a battery to (i) downwardly or upwardly move and (ii) pivot to a position outside or inside of a location for the battery.

The smoke detector of claim 1 , wherein the body includes a location for installation of a battery, the spiral ramp being configured to guide movement of the indicator during installation or removal of the battery to (i) downwardly or upwardly move relative to the upper portion, and (ii) pivot to a position outside or inside of the location for the battery.

10. The smoke detector of claim 1 , wherein the body includes a cavity configured to receive a battery, the spiral ramp being configured to guide movement of the indicator in the cavity.

11. The smoke detector of claim 10 , wherein the indicator is configured to move between a first position to impede positioning of the battery in the cavity and a second position to allow positioning of the battery in the cavity.

12. The smoke detector of claim 11 , further comprising a cover configured to engage with the body to cover the cavity, the indicator configured to prevent engagement of the cover with the body in the first position and permit engagement of the cover with the body in the second position.

13. The smoke detector of claim 1 , wherein the upper portion includes a protrusion with at least one opening to receive air for detecting an environmental condition.

14. The smoke detector of claim 1 , wherein the upper portion includes a wall with a lower surface, the spiral ramp extending downwardly from the lower surface of the wall.

15. The smoke detector of claim 14 , wherein the wall includes an opening to a cavity for installation of a battery.

16. The smoke detector of claim 15 , wherein the spiral ramp is adjacent the opening.

17. The smoke detector of claim 1 , wherein the body includes a stop adjacent the spiral ramp and configured to limit movement of the indicator relative to the spiral ramp.

18. The smoke detector of claim 17 , wherein the body includes a shaft adjacent to the spiral ramp and the stop, the shaft to guide at least one of pivotal and linear movement of the indicator relative to the spiral ramp.

19. The smoke detector of claim 18 , wherein the spiral ramp is a first spiral ramp, the body including a second spiral ramp on a side of the shaft that is opposite the first spiral ramp.

20. The smoke detector of claim 19 , wherein the stop, the shaft and the first and second spiral ramps extend downwardly and away from the upper portion.

21. A smoke detector comprising:

a body including an upper portion configured to face a surface on which the smoke detector is mounted, and a cam surface and a shaft positioned below the upper portion, the cam surface configured to engage with an indicator to cause movement of the indicator toward and away from the upper portion in response to rotation of the indicator about the shaft.

22. A smoke detector comprising:

a body including an upper portion having a wall configured to face a surface on which the smoke detector is mounted, the wall having an opening to a location for a battery within the body and a lower surface, the body including a cam surface and a shaft extending downwardly from the lower surface, the cam surface configured to enable an indicator during installation or removal of a battery at the location to (i) downwardly or upwardly move relative to the opening and (ii) pivot to a position outside or inside of the location for the battery in response to rotation of the indicator about the shaft.
