Abstract

A hand vacuum cleaner has a cyclone having a cyclone axis of rotation that extends between the front and rear ends of the cyclone. A main body houses a suction motor. The suction motor is positioned at a lower end of the main body and forward of a battery pack provided at a lower end of a pistol grip handle.

Claims (55)

1. A hand vacuum cleaner having an upper end, a lower end, a front end having a dirty air inlet and a rear end, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:

(a) an air flow path extending from the dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet, the air flow path comprising an inlet conduit that is positioned at the upper end of the hand vacuum cleaner, the inlet conduit having a conduit axis;

(b) a cyclone assembly positioned in the air flow path, the cyclone assembly comprising a cyclone having a front end, a rear end and a cyclone axis of rotation that extends between the front and rear ends of the cyclone;

(c) a main body housing a suction motor, the suction motor is positioned in the air flow path and is positioned downstream of the cyclone, the suction motor has an axis of rotation;

(d) a pistol grip handle located at the rear end of the hand vacuum cleaner wherein a finger grip area is positioned forward of the pistol grip handle and rearward of the main body, and wherein the cyclone axis of rotation extends through the pistol grip handle, and wherein the pistol grip handle is substantially perpendicular to the cyclone axis of rotation; and,

(e) a first energy storage unit located at a lower end of the pistol grip handle;

wherein the suction motor is located at the lower end of the hand vacuum cleaner and forward of the first energy storage unit.

2. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 further comprising a pre-motor filter that overlies the suction motor when the cyclone axis of rotation extends horizontally and the dirty air inlet is positioned above the suction motor.

3. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 2 wherein the cyclone axis of rotation extends through the pre-motor filter.

4. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 further comprising a pre-motor filter wherein the cyclone axis of rotation extends through the pre-motor filter.

5. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the cyclone axis of rotation extending horizontally and the dirty air inlet is positioned above the suction motor, the suction motor is positioned below the cyclone axis of rotation.

The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 5 wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the cyclone axis of rotation extending horizontally and the dirty air inlet is positioned above the suction motor, a lower end of the suction motor is positioned below an upper end of the first energy storage unit.

The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the cyclone axis of rotation extending horizontally and the dirty air inlet is positioned above the suction motor, a lower end of the suction motor is positioned below an upper end of the first energy storage unit.

8. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 further comprising a second energy storage unit that is provided on an upper end of the pistol grip handle or in a hand grip portion of the pistol grip handle.

9. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein a plane that is transverse to the cyclone axis of rotation extends through the finger grip area and the energy storage unit.

10. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the cyclone assembly and a pre-motor filter comprise a removable air treatment unit.

11. A hand vacuum cleaner having an upper end, a lower end, a front end having a dirty air inlet and a rear end, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:

(a) an air flow path extending from the dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet, the air flow path comprising an inlet conduit, the inlet conduit having a conduit axis;

(b) an air treatment chamber positioned in the air flow path, the air treatment chamber having a front end, a rear end and a central longitudinal axis that extends between the front and rear ends of the air treatment chamber;

(c) a main body housing a suction motor, the suction motor is positioned in the air flow path, the suction motor has an axis of rotation;

(d) a pistol grip handle located at the rear end of the hand vacuum cleaner wherein a finger grip area is positioned forward of the pistol grip handle and rearward of the main body and wherein the central longitudinal axis extends through a hand grip portion of the pistol grip handle, and wherein the pistol grip handle is substantially perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis;

(e) a first energy storage unit located at a lower end of the pistol grip handle, wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the central longitudinal axis extending horizontally and the first energy storage is positioned below the central longitudinal axis, the suction motor is located at the lower end of the hand vacuum cleaner and forward of the first energy storage unit.

12. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 11 further comprising a pre-motor filter that overlies the suction motor when the central longitudinal axis extends horizontally and the first energy storage unit is positioned below the central longitudinal axis.

13. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 12 wherein the central longitudinal axis extends through the pre-motor filter.

14. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 12 wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the central longitudinal axis extending horizontally and the first energy storage unit is positioned below the central longitudinal axis, the suction motor is positioned below the central longitudinal axis.

The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 14 wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the central longitudinal axis extending horizontally and the first energy storage unit is positioned below the central longitudinal axis, a lower end of the suction motor is positioned below an upper end of the first energy storage unit.

16. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 11 wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the central longitudinal axis extending horizontally and the first energy storage is positioned below the central longitudinal axis, a lower end of the suction motor is positioned below an upper end of the first energy storage unit.

17. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 11 further comprising a second energy storage unit that is provided on an upper end of the pistol grip handle or in a hand grip portion of the pistol grip handle.

18. A hand vacuum cleaner having an upper end, a lower end, a front end having a dirty air inlet and a rear end, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:

(a) an air flow path extending from the dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet, the air flow path comprising an inlet conduit, the inlet conduit having a conduit axis;

(b) an air treatment chamber positioned in the air flow path, the air treatment chamber having a front end, a rear end and a central longitudinal axis that extends between the front and rear ends of the air treatment chamber;

(c) a main body housing a suction motor, the suction motor is positioned in the air flow path, the suction motor has an axis of rotation;

(d) a pistol grip handle located at the rear end of the hand vacuum cleaner wherein a finger grip area is positioned forward of the pistol grip handle and rearward of the main body and wherein the central longitudinal axis extends through a hand grip portion of the pistol grip handle; and,

(e) a first energy storage unit located at a lower end of the pistol grip handle, wherein, when the central longitudinal axis extends horizontally and the first energy storage unit is positioned below the central longitudinal axis, a plane that is transverse to the central longitudinal axis extends through a pre-motor filter, which is positioned above the suction motor, and the suction motor.

19. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 18 wherein, when the central longitudinal axis extends horizontally and the first energy storage is positioned below the central longitudinal axis, the pre-motor filter overlies the suction motor.

20. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 19 wherein a plane that is transverse to the central longitudinal axis extends through the finger grip area and the energy storage unit.

21. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 18 wherein, when the central longitudinal axis extends horizontally and the first energy storage is positioned below the central longitudinal axis, the suction motor is located at the lower end of the hand vacuum cleaner and forward of the first energy storage unit.

22. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 21 wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the central longitudinal axis extending horizontally and the dirty air inlet is positioned above the suction motor, a lower end of the suction motor is positioned below an upper end of the first energy storage unit.

23. A hand vacuum cleaner having an upper end, a lower end, a front end having a dirty air inlet and a rear end, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:

(a) an air flow path extending from the dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet, the air flow path comprising an inlet conduit, the inlet conduit having a conduit axis;

(b) an air treatment chamber positioned in the air flow path, the air treatment chamber having a front end, a rear end and a central longitudinal axis that extends between the front and rear ends of the air treatment chamber;

(c) a main body housing a suction motor, the suction motor is positioned in the air flow path, the suction motor has an axis of rotation;

(d) a pistol grip handle located at the rear end of the hand vacuum cleaner wherein a finger grip area is positioned forward of the pistol grip handle and rearward of the main body and wherein the central longitudinal axis extends through a hand grip portion of the pistol grip handle; and,

(e) a first energy storage unit located at a lower end of the pistol grip handle, wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the central longitudinal axis extending horizontally and the dirty air inlet is positioned above the suction motor, the suction motor is positioned below the central longitudinal axis.

24. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 23 wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the central longitudinal axis extending horizontally and the first energy storage is positioned below the central longitudinal axis, the suction motor is located forward of the first energy storage unit.

25. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 24 further comprising a pre-motor filter that overlies the suction motor when the central longitudinal axis extends horizontally and the dirty air inlet is positioned above the suction motor.

26. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 25 wherein a plane that is transverse to the central longitudinal axis extends through the finger grip area and the energy storage unit.

27. A hand vacuum cleaner having an upper end, a lower end, a front end having a dirty air inlet and a rear end, the hand vacuum cleaner comprising:

(a) an air flow path extending from the dirty air inlet to a clean air outlet, the air flow path comprising an inlet conduit, the inlet conduit having a conduit axis;

(b) an air treatment chamber positioned in the air flow path, the air treatment chamber having a front end, a rear end and a central longitudinal axis that extends between the front and rear ends of the air treatment chamber;

(c) a main body housing a suction motor, the suction motor is positioned in the air flow path, the suction motor has an axis of rotation;

(d) a pistol grip handle located at the rear end of the hand vacuum cleaner wherein a finger grip area is positioned forward of the pistol grip handle and rearward of the main body and wherein the central longitudinal axis extends through a hand grip portion of the pistol grip handle; and,

(e) a first energy storage unit located at a lower end of the pistol grip handle, wherein, when the hand vacuum cleaner is oriented with the central longitudinal axis extending horizontally and the dirty air inlet is positioned above the suction motor, a lower end of the suction motor is positioned below an upper end of the first energy storage unit.

28. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 27 further comprising a pre-motor filter that overlies the suction motor when the central longitudinal axis extends horizontally and the dirty air inlet is positioned above the suction motor.

29. The hand vacuum cleaner of claim 28 wherein a plane that is transverse to the central longitudinal axis extends through the finger grip area and the energy storage unit.
