Abstract

An automated warehouse storage system including a multilevel storage array is provided. Each aisle has a set of storage levels and each level has storage locations distributed along the aisle. The guideway network extending through the multilevel storage array is configured for autonomous vehicles to move along the guideway network within the multilevel storage array. The guideway network including an inter-aisle guideway spanning at least two of the multiple aisles and a set of guideway levels extending in an aisle of the multiple aisles and disposed so that each guideway level is at a different one of the storage levels and the vehicles on the guideway level can access the storage locations distributed along the aisle. Each set of guideway levels is connected to the inter-aisle guideway forming a common guideway path so that a vehicle can move between inter-aisle guideway and each guideway level along the common guideway path.

Claims (54)

1 . An automated system for storage and retrieval of inventory of commercial products, the automated system comprising:

a multilevel storage structure comprising:

multiple vertically arranged levels of storage locations, the storage locations configured to store containers that are configured to store one or more eaches of the inventory; and

multiple pathways each extending proximate to one or more of the storage locations;

a plurality of workstations coupled to the multilevel storage structure; and

a plurality of mobile robots configured to move at least partially within the multilevel storage structure to carry the containers between the storage locations and the plurality of workstations;

wherein each of the plurality of mobile robots is configured to:

retrieve a container, of the containers, from one of the storage locations;

travel to one of the plurality of workstations via at least one of the multiple pathways;

move to a position proximate a picker of the one of the plurality of workstation;

allow the picker to remove at least one eaches of the inventory while the container is retained on the respective mobile robot; and

move away from the position and leave the one of the plurality of workstation.

2 . The automated system of claim 1 , wherein when the mobile robot is positioned proximate the picker, the mobile robot is configured to allow the picker to:

remove all of the inventory from the container; and

transfer all of the inventory to a second container, of the containers, being carried by a second mobile robot already containing one or more items of the inventory to consolidate all of the inventory of the container to the second container.

3 . The automated system of claim 1 , wherein the multiple pathways comprises one or more of a rail, a deck and a floor.

4 . The automated system of claim 1 , wherein a first workstation of the plurality of workstations comprises a first track along which a first mobile robot, of the plurality of mobile robots, travels while retaining a first container, of the containers, to the position proximate the first workstation and along which the first mobile robot travels to move away from the position.

5 . The automated system of claim 4 , wherein the first track comprises a tilt-track configured to tilt the first mobile robot causing a tilt of the first container, while at the position, toward the picker easing access to a set of one or more eaches within the first container.

6 . The automated system of claim 4 , wherein the first workstation further comprises a second track along which a second set of mobile robots are transported to position each of the second set of mobile robots proximate the first workstation to each receive one or more eaches removed from each of a subset of one or more of the containers each transported by one of the plurality of mobile robots.

7 . The automated system of claim 1 , wherein a first mobile robot, of the plurality of mobile robots, is configured to transport an order container, into which the at least one each of the eaches is placed in fulfilling an order, to a respective one of the storage locations in the multilevel storage structure and temporarily position the order container into the respective one of the storage locations.

8 . The automated system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a central controller comprising one or more processors configured to:

direct a transfer, at a first workstation of the plurality of workstations, of a first item of inventory to be moved from a first container, of the containers, and placed into one or more of a set of containers, of the containers, each already containing one or more of the first item of inventory until the first container is empty.

9 . An automated fulfillment system, comprising:

a storage section with storage shelves configured to store containers configured to store different items of inventory;

a workstation;

a plurality of mobile robots configured to transport the containers between the storage section and the workstation; and

a central controller comprising one or more processors configured to:

direct mobile robots of the plurality of mobile robots to transport a first container and one or more second containers, of the containers, from the storage section to the workstation, and

direct consolidation of inventory at the workstation comprising directing a transfer of one of a first item of inventory to be moved from the first container and placed into the one or more second containers already containing one or more of the first item of inventory until the first container is empty.

10 . The automated fulfillment system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more processors of the central controller are further configured to direct a first subgroup of the mobile robots to return the one or more second containers to the storage section after the consolidation of the inventory into the one or more second containers.

11 . The automated fulfillment system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more processors of the central controller are further configured to direct a transfer of the empty first container to a replenishment station where additional sub-containers are stocked into the first container.

12 . The automated fulfillment system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more processors of the central controller are further configured to direct the transfer of newly arrived inventory, at the workstation, into the empty first container in replenishing the first container with the newly arrived inventory.

13 . The automated fulfillment system of claim 12 , wherein the one or more processors of the central controller are further configured to direct a first mobile robot of the mobile robots to return the first container, replenished with the newly arrived inventory, to the storage section.

14 . The automated fulfillment system of claim 9 , wherein the one or more second containers comprise a plurality of containers, each positioned at the workstation by a respective one of the mobile robots and each configured to receive one or more of sub-containers removed from the first container, wherein each of the sub-containers fits into a respective container of the one or more second containers and is removable from the respective one or more second containers.

15 . An automated fulfillment system, comprising:

a storage section with storage shelves configured to store containers configured to store different items of inventory;

a workstation;

a plurality of mobile robots configured to transport the containers between the storage section and the workstation; and

a central controller comprising one or more processors configured to:

direct a first set of mobile robots of the plurality of mobile robots to transport a first set of containers, of the containers, to the workstation,

direct a transfer, at the workstation, of returned inventory returned by customers into the first set of containers, and

direct the first set of mobile robots to transport the first set of containers with the returned inventory into the storage section; and

a delivery section configured to enable pickup and delivery of ordered inventory to customers;

wherein the returned inventory is received at the delivery section, and wherein the one or more processors of the central controller are configured to direct one or more mobile robots, of the plurality of mobile robots, to transfer the returned inventory from the delivery section to the workstation.

16 . The automated fulfillment system of claim 15 , wherein the one or more processors of the central controller are further configured to:

direct a first mobile robot, of the plurality of mobile robots, to transport a first container from the storage section to the workstation, and

direct consolidation of a first item of inventory at the workstation comprising directing a transfer of the first item of inventory between the first container and one or more containers of the first set of containers already containing one or more of the first item of inventory until the first container is empty.

17 . The automated fulfillment system of claim 16 , further comprising:

a second workstation;

wherein the one or more processors of the central controller are further configured to:

direct a second mobile robot, of the plurality of mobile robots, to transfer of the first empty container to the second workstation;

direct one or more other items of inventory to be placed into the first container m replenishment of inventory; and
