Abstract

A surface cleaner is provided. The surface cleaner comprises: an operating component configured to perform a function of the surface cleaner; a base moveable along a surface; an accelerometer configured to generate a signal; and a controller in communication with the accelerometer and the operating component, wherein the controller is operable to control the operating component based on the signal, and wherein the operating component is selected from a group consisting of a suction motor operable to generate an airflow, a brushroll motor operable to drive a brushroll, an actuator operable to adjust a height of a brushroll from the surface, a pump operable to deliver a cleaning fluid, an actuator operable to control an airflow or fluid valve, and an indicator operable to indicate a parameter of the surface cleaner.

Claims (31)

1. A user-operated cleaning device comprising:

a base movable along a surface to be cleaned;

a suction nozzle;

a suction source in fluid communication with the suction nozzle, wherein the suction source is configured to generate an airflow through the suction nozzle;

an accelerometer configured to generate a signal in response to movement of the base along the surface, wherein the signal is indicative of direction and speed of the movement of the base; and

a controller operatively connected to the suction source and the accelerometer, the controller being configured to:

change, in response to the signal, a power level of the suction source; and

increase the power level of the suction source in response to an increase of the speed of the base and decrease the power level of the suction source in response to a decrease of the speed of the base.

2. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to decrease the power level of the suction source in response to the signal indicating no movement of the base.

3. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to interrupt the airflow in response to the signal indicating no movement of the base.

4. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to decrease the power level of the suction source in response to the accelerometer not generating the signal.

5. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to interrupt the airflow in response to the accelerometer not generating the signal.

6. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 1 , comprising a handle configured to be gripped by a user during a cleaning operation.

7. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 6 , wherein the handle is configured to be gripped by the user to move the base along the surface in a forward direction and a rearward direction during the cleaning operation.

8. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 1 , wherein the signal is a first signal in response to movement in a forward direction and the signal is a second signal in response to movement in a rearward direction.

9. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 1 , wherein the movement of the base along the surface is user-initiated movement, and wherein the controller is configured to, when changing the power level of the suction source, change the power level of the suction source in response to the signal and independent of user interaction with the cleaning device other than the user-initiated movement.

10. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 1 , comprising a fluid valve, wherein the controller is configured to control the fluid valve based on the signal.

11. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 10 , comprising an actuator for controlling the fluid valve, wherein the controller is configured to control the fluid valve using the actuator.

12. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 1 , comprising an indicator operable to indicate a parameter of the cleaning device, wherein the controller is configured to control the indicator based on the signal.

13. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 1 , comprising a brush assembly and an actuator operable to adjust a height of the brush assembly from the surface, wherein the controller is configured to control the actuator based on the signal.

14. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 1 , comprising a brush and a motor for driving the brush, wherein the controller is configured to control the motor based on the signal.

15. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 14 , wherein the controller is configured to control the motor to decrease a rate of rotation of the brush in response to the signal indicating a change from movement of the base in a forward direction to movement of the base in a rearward direction.

16. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 14 , wherein the controller is configured to control the motor to increase a rate of rotation of the brush in response to the signal indicating a change from movement of the base in a rearward direction to movement of the base in a forward direction.

17. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 14 , wherein the controller is configured to control the motor to change a direction of rotation of the brush in response to the signal indicating a change from movement of the base in a forward direction to movement of the base in a rearward direction.

18. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 14 , wherein the controller is configured to control the motor to change a direction of rotation of the brush in response to the signal indicating a change from movement of the base in a rearward direction to movement of the base in a forward direction.

19. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 1 , comprising a liquid distribution system to deliver solution to the surface, wherein the controller is configured to operate, in response to the signal, the liquid distribution system in a distributing mode during the movement of the base and in a non-distributing mode during the movement of the base.

20. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 19 , wherein the controller is configured to change, in response to the signal and independent of user interaction with the cleaning device, between the distributing mode and the non-distributing mode.

21. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 19 , wherein the controller is configured to, while operating the liquid distribution system in the distributing mode, control the liquid distribution system to increase or decrease delivery of the solution to the surface in response to a respective increase or decrease of the speed of the base.

22. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 19 , wherein the liquid distribution system comprises a pump, and wherein the controller is configured to control the pump based on the signal.

23. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 19 , wherein the liquid distribution system is configured to discontinue delivery of the solution in the non-distributing mode.

24. The user-operated cleaning device of claim 19 , wherein the controller is configured to, while operating the liquid distribution system in the distributing mode, change the liquid distribution system to the non-distributing mode in response to the signal indicating no movement of the base.
