Abstract

A medical device may include an elongated body, a balloon positioned at a distal portion of the elongated body, and one or more pressure-wave emitters positioned along a central longitudinal axis of the elongated body within the balloon. The one or more pressure-wave emitters may be configured to propagate pressure waves radially outward through the fluid to fragment a calcified lesion at the target treatment site. The at least one of the one or more pressure-wave emitters may comprise an electronic emitter including a first electrode and a second electrode. The first electrode and the second electrode may be arranged to define a spark gap between the first electrode and the second electrode, and the second electrode may comprise a portion of a hypotube.

Claims (36)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

an elongated structure comprising a guidewire lumen; and

an emitter positioned along the elongated structure, the emitter configured to emit pressure waves to fragment a buildup in an organ,

the emitter comprising a first electrode and a second electrode each at least partially surrounding the elongated structure, the first electrode defining a first at least partial perimeter and the second electrode defining a second at least partial perimeter, the first at least partial perimeter longitudinally spaced from and parallel to the second at least partial perimeter such that the longitudinal spacing forms a spark gap between the first electrode and the second electrode,

the first electrode and the second electrode fixed with respect to one another such that the first electrode is configured to spark at a random location about the first at least partial perimeter and thereby arc to the second electrode, the first electrode and the second electrode configured to remain fixed in orientation with respect to one another while the elongated structure navigates a tortuous vasculature.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode and the second electrode each comprise an elliptical cross-section.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a power conductor electrically coupled to the first electrode; and

a grounded conductor electrically coupled to the second electrode.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the power conductor is located on an opposite side of the elongated structure than the grounded conductor.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the elongated structure is an inner elongated structure, the apparatus further comprising:

an outer elongated structure comprising an inflation lumen; and

a balloon positioned at a distal portion of an elongated body, the elongated body comprising the inner elongated structure and the outer elongated structure, the balloon configured to receive a fluid via the inflation lumen to be inflated.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the emitter is a first emitter and the spark gap is a first spark gap, the apparatus further comprising a second emitter comprising a third electrode and a fourth electrode, the third electrode spaced from the fourth electrode to form a second spark gap between the third electrode and the fourth electrode, and the third electrode and the fourth electrode each at least partially surrounding the elongated structure.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the third electrode is parallel to the fourth electrode, and the third electrode and the fourth electrode are fixed with respect to one another such that the third electrode is configured to spark at a random location and thereby arc to the fourth electrode, the third electrode and the fourth electrode configured to remain fixed in orientation with respect to one another while the elongated structure navigates the tortuous vasculature.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the first electrode is parallel to the third electrode.

9. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the first emitter and the second emitter are configured to propagate pressure waves independently of one another.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the first emitter and the second emitter are configured to create a compound pressure wave from sequential firing of the first emitter and the second emitter.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the first emitter and the second emitter are configured to create a compound pressure wave from timed firing of the first emitter and the second emitter.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the first emitter and the second emitter are configured to create a compound pressure wave from simultaneous firing of the first emitter and the second emitter.

13. The apparatus of claim 6 , further comprising:

a first power conductor electrically coupled to the first electrode;

a second power conductor electrically coupled to the third electrode; and

a grounded conductor electrically coupled to the second electrode and the fourth electrode,

wherein when the first electrode receives electricity, the electricity arcs to the second electrode, and when the third electrode receives electricity, the electricity arcs to the fourth electrode.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the first power conductor is configured to provide electricity separately from the second power conductor.

15. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the first power conductor and the second power conductor are located on an opposite side of the elongated structure than the grounded conductor.

16. The apparatus of claim 6 , further comprising:

a first grounded conductor electrically coupled to the second electrode;

a second grounded conductor electrically coupled to the fourth electrode; and

a power conductor electrically coupled to the first electrode and the third electrode,

wherein when the first electrode receives electricity, the electricity arcs to the second electrode, and when the third electrode receives electricity, the electricity arcs to the fourth electrode.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the first grounded conductor is configured to ground the second electrode separately from the fourth electrode.

18. The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the first grounded conductor and the second grounded conductor are located on an opposite side of the elongated structure than the power conductor.

19. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the elongated structure comprises a polyimide layer and a polymer layer at least partially surrounding the polyimide layer.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein the elongated structure comprises a reinforcement layer at least partially surrounding the polyimide layer, and the polymer layer at least partially surrounding the reinforcement layer.
