Abstract

The disclosure describes techniques for detecting network measurement inaccuracies through the detection of sender delays or packet drops. For example, a sender device of a test packet may determine whether the sender device is experiencing any issues in sending the test packet to a receiver device and notify a controller of the issues such that the controller may generate an indication that one or more Key Performance Indicator (KPI) measurements based on the test packets from the sender device are inaccurate and/or untrustworthy, remove the inaccurate KPI measurements, and/or adjust the inaccurate KPI measurements.

Claims (49)

1 . A controller comprising:

one or more processors operably coupled to memory, wherein the one or more processors are configured to:

receive, from a receiver device, one or more performance measurements determined by the receiver device, wherein the one or more performance measurements are determined based at least in part on a second timestamp included in a test packet of one or more test packets sent by a sender device and received by the receiver device, wherein the second timestamp indicates a time at which the test packet is sent out of the sender device via a network interface of the sender device;

receive, from the sender device, a message that indicates a sender delay issue of the sender device, wherein the sender delay issue is based on a time difference value computed from a first timestamp indicating a time at which the test packet is generated by an application executing on the sender device and the second timestamp indicating the time at which the test packet is sent out of the sender device via the network interface of the sender device; and

determine, based on the received message from the sender device, that the one or more performance measurements determined, by the receiver device and based at least in part on the second timestamp included in the test packet sent by the sender device and received by the receiver device, are inaccurate.

2 . The controller of claim 1 ,

wherein the indication of the sender delay issue comprises an indication that the time difference value is less than a threshold time value.

3 . The controller of claim 1 ,

wherein the indication of the sender delay issue comprises an indication that the time difference value is greater than a threshold time value.

4 . The controller of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

output, based on the message that indicates the sender delay issue of the sender device, an indication that the one or more performance measurements determined by the receiver are inaccurate.

5 . The controller of claim 4 , wherein the indication that the one or more performance measurements determined by the receiver are inaccurate comprises a visual indication for display within a graphical user interface.

6 . The controller of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

remove, based on the message that indicates the sender delay issue of the sender device, the one or more performance measurements determined by the receiver device from being displayed within a graphical user interface.

7 . The controller of claim 1 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

adjust, based on the message that indicates the sender delay issue of the sender device, the one or more performance measurements determined by the receiver.

8 . The controller of claim 1 ,

wherein the message comprises information associated with the sender delay issue of the sender device.

9 . The controller of claim 8 , wherein the information associated with the sender delay issue of the sender device comprises at least one of:

the first timestamp indicating the time at which the test packet is generated by the application executing on the sender device;

the second timestamp indicating the time at which the test packet is sent out of the sender device via the network interface of the sender device; or

the time difference value computed from the first timestamp and the second timestamp.

10 . A method comprising:

receiving, by a controller and from a receiver device, one or more performance measurements determined by the receiver device, wherein the one or more performance measurements are determined based at least in part on a second timestamp included in a test packet of one or more test packets sent by a sender device and received by the receiver device, wherein the second timestamp indicates a time at which the test packet is sent out of the sender device via a network interface of the sender device;

receiving, by the controller and from the sender device, a message that indicates a sender delay issue of the sender device, wherein the sender delay issue is based on a time difference value computed from a first timestamp indicating a time at which the test packet is generated by an application executing on the sender device and the second timestamp indicating the time at which the test packet is sent out of the sender device via network interface of the sender device; and

determining, by the controller and based on the received message from the sender device, that the one or more performance measurements determined, by the receiver device and based at least in part on the second timestamp included in the test packet sent by the sender device and received by the receiver device, are inaccurate.

11 . The method of claim 10 ,

wherein the indication of the sender delay issue comprises an indication that the time difference value is less than a threshold time value.

12 . The method of claim 10 ,

wherein the indication of the sender delay issue comprises an indication that the time difference value is greater than a threshold time value.

13 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

outputting, by the controller and based on the message that indicates the sender delay issue of the sender device, an indication that the one or more performance measurements determined by the receiver are inaccurate.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the indication that the one or more performance measurements determined by the receiver are inaccurate comprises a visual indication for display within a graphical user interface.

15 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

removing, by the controller and based on the message that indicates the sender delay issue of the sender device, the one or more performance measurements determined by the receiver device from being displayed within a graphical user interface.

16 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

adjusting, by the controller and based on the message that indicates the sender delay issue of the sender device, the one or more performance measurements determined by the receiver.

17 . The method of claim 10 ,

wherein the message comprises information associated with the sender delay issue of the sender device.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the information associated with the sender delay issue of the sender device comprises at least one of:

the first timestamp indicating the time at which the test packet is generated by the application executing on the sender device;

the second timestamp indicating the time at which the test packet is sent out of the sender device via the network interface of the sender device; or the time difference value computed from the first timestamp and the second timestamp.

19 . Non-transitory computer-readable storage media encoded with instructions, the instructions comprising instructions that, when executed, cause processing circuitry to:

receive, from a receiver device, one or more performance measurements determined by the receiver device, wherein the one or more performance measurements are determined based at least in part on a second timestamp included in a test packet of one or more test packets sent by a sender device and received by the receiver device, wherein the second timestamp indicates a time at which the test packet is sent out of the sender device via a network interface of the sender device;

receive, from the sender device, a message that indicates a sender delay issue of the sender device, wherein the sender delay issue is based on a time difference value computed from a first timestamp indicating a time at which the test packet is generated by an application executing on the sender device and the second timestamp indicating the time at which the test packet is sent out of the sender device via the network interface of the sender device; and

determine, based on the received message from the sender device, that the one or more performance measurements determined, by the receiver device and based at least in part on the second timestamp included in the test packet sent by the sender device and received by the receiver device, are inaccurate.

20 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage media of claim 19 , wherein the instructions further cause the processing circuitry to perform one or more of

removing, based on the message that indicates the sender delay issue of the sender device, the one or more performance measurements determined by the receiver device from being displayed within a graphical user interface; or

adjusting, based on the message that indicates the sender delay issue, the one or more performance measurements determined by the receiver.
