Abstract

A multilayer protective film comprising a polyvinylidene fluoride/acrylate polymer layer and one or more thermoplastic polyurethane layers is provided. The multilayer protective film may possess beneficial and desirable properties useful in protecting surfaces, such as for example, high ultraviolet resistance, optical clarity, durability, and gloss.

Claims (19)

1. A method of making a multilayer film characterized in that the method comprises:

(a) forming a first layer comprising a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/acrylate polymer blend;

(b) forming a second layer consisting of a polycaprolactone-based thermoplastic polyurethane; and

(c) bonding the first layer to a major surface of the second layer.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1 , characterized in that the first layer and the second layer are coextruded.

3. The method as claimed in claim 1 , characterized in that the first layer and the second layer are sequentially extruded.

4. The method of claim 1 , characterized in that the multilayer film is transparent.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising adding a color pigment or a coloring agent to at least one of the layers.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising bonding an adhesive to the second layer.

7. The method of claim 5 , further comprising corona treating the second layer.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising coating the first layer with a top coat.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

(a) forming a third layer comprising a thermoplastic polyurethane; and

(b) bonding the third layer to the second layer to form a layer comprising two layers of thermoplastic polyurethane.

10. The method of claim 9 , characterized in that the first layer is bonded to the layer comprising two layers of thermoplastic polyurethane.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising bonding an adhesive to the third layer.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising corona treating the third layer.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the second and third layers comprise the same thermoplastic polyurethane.

14. The method of claim 9 , wherein the second and third layers comprise different thermoplastic polyurethanes.
