Abstract

A system for imaging a breast includes a gantry and a tube head rotatably coupled thereto. An x-ray source is disposed within the tube head. A support arm is movably coupled to the gantry and includes a breast support platform. An x-ray detector is disposed within the breast support platform and a compression arm is movably coupled to the support arm. An opaque breast compression paddle is coupled to the compression arm. The breast support platform and the opaque compression paddle at least partially define a compression volume for compressing a breast and a camera is arranged to capture images of the compression volume. An image display is at least partially disposed on the system and is configured to display the images of the compression volume captured by the camera.

Claims (30)

1. A method of displaying an image of a breast in a breast immobilization system having a breast support platform and an immobilization paddle, the method comprising:

supporting the breast on the beast support platform;

imaging at least a portion of the supported breast with at least one camera; and

displaying at least a portion of the image by projecting the image to a surface, wherein the image is a moving image.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein projecting the image to the surface includes projecting from a projector located on a tube head the image towards the breast support platform.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the image is projected on at least a portion of the immobilization paddle.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the imaging with the at least one camera occurs when the at least one camera is secured to at least one of a support arm, an immobilization arm, and the immobilization paddle.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the imaging with the at least one camera occurs when the at least one camera is disposed above the breast support platform.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising processing the image prior to displaying at least a portion of the image.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising detecting contact between at least a portion of the immobilization paddle and the breast.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising freezing display of the moving image based at least in part on the detected contact.

9. The method of claim 7 , further comprising emitting an x-ray towards the breast based at least in part on the detected contact.

10. A system for imaging a breast, the system comprising:

a gantry;

a tube head rotatably coupled to the gantry;

an x-ray source disposed within the tube head;

a support arm movably coupled to the gantry, wherein the support arm comprises a breast support platform;

an x-ray detector disposed within the breast support platform;

an immobilization arm movably coupled to the support arm;

an immobilization paddle coupled to the immobilization arm, wherein the breast support platform and the immobilization paddle at least partially define an immobilization volume for immobilizing the breast;

at least one camera arranged so as to capture at least one image of the immobilization volume; and

at least one projector configured to display the at least one image of the immobilization volume captured by the at least one camera.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the projector is disposed in the tube head.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the immobilization paddle forms a screen for the display of the at least one image.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one camera is secured to at least one of the support arm, the immobilization arm, and the immobilization paddle.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one camera is disposed above the breast support platform.

15. The system of claim 10 , further comprising an image processor configured to process the at least one image captured by the at least one camera.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one camera is configured to capture a moving image.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the immobilization paddle includes a foam immobilization element.

18. The system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one image includes at least a partial outline of the breast.
