Abstract

Disclosed are systems and methods for automatically deleting messages from a recipient's inbox. The disclosed systems and methods provide the ability for automatic actions to be taken on delivered messages based on a passage of time. This enables a sender of messages, email service provider and/or email platform to exert control over sent messages to limit the number and type of operations that may be performed on such messages. For example, operations such as saving, forwarding, printing, copying, or otherwise duplicating the message and/or message data can be prohibited and all together rendered impossible. The disclosed systems and methods enables the purging of messages and associated message data from a recipient's inbox at a certain specified time, after the passage of a pre-determined amount of time, or upon the detection of a specified event.

Claims (45)

1. A method comprising:

delivering, by a computing device over a network, a message to an inbox associated with a user, the message is associated with a time-to-live (TTL) flag indicating that the message is being sent in accordance with a short-lived (SL) protocol enabling self-destruction of the message;

monitoring, via the computing device, an environment to detect an event indicative of an action of the user, respective to the message, satisfying a TTL restriction indicated by the TTL flag; and

causing, via the computing device, deletion of the message from the user's inbox in response to said event detection.

2. The method of claim 1 , the TTL flag comprising information indicating a type of action that can be performed in connection with the message.

3. The method of claim 1 , the TTL flag comprising information indicating a number of times that a type of action can be performed before self-destruction of the message.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, at the computing device over the network from a second user, an initial message in connection with the message delivered to the user's inbox, the initial message is addressed to the inbox associated with the user and comprises message content, the initial message is associated with the TTL flag and is being sent in accordance with the SL protocol enabling self-destruction.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

making, via the computing device, a determination that the user's message account hosting the inbox of the user supports the SL protocol, wherein the message delivered to the inbox associated with the user is the initial message based on the determination.

6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

making, via the computing device, a determination that user's message account hosting the inbox of the user does not support the SL protocol, wherein the message delivered to the inbox associated with the user is a link message comprising a link to the initial message based on the determination, the link message being compliant with the TTL restriction.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

receiving, by the computing device, input indicative of selection of the link in the link message; and

causing, by the computing device, display of a preview of the initial message at the user's device in response to the link selection input.

8. The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

storing, via the computing device, the initial message in data storage on the network.

9. The method of claim 8 , causing deletion of the message from the user inbox further comprising:

causing, by the computing device, deletion of the initial message in the data storage on the network.

10. The method of claim 1 , the TTL restriction comprises a restriction disabling the user's ability to duplicate the message.

11. The method of claim 1 , the user is able to reply to the message only prior to expiration of the TTL restriction.

12. The method of claim 1 , the TTL restriction is embedded within metadata of the message.

13. The method of claim 1 , the event indicative of an action satisfying the TTL restriction corresponds to an attempt to perform a prohibited action respective to the message.

14. The method of claim 1 , the event indicative of an action satisfying the TTL restriction corresponds to performance of a permitted action respective to the message.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium tangibly encoded with computer-executable instructions that when executed by a processor associated with a computing device perform a method comprising:

delivering a message to an inbox associated with a user, the message is associated with a time-to-live (TTL) flag indicating that the message is being sent in accordance with a short-lived (SL) protocol enabling self-destruction of the message;

monitoring an environment to detect an event indicative of an action of the user, respective to the message, satisfying a TTL restriction indicated by the TTL flag; and

causing deletion of the message from the user's inbox in response to said event detection.

16. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , the TTL flag comprising information indicating a type of action that can be performed in connection with the message.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 15 , the TTL flag comprising information indicating a number of times that a type of action can be performed before self-destruction of the message.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 13 , the method further comprising:

receiving, over the network from a second user, an initial message in connection with the message delivered to the user's inbox, the initial message is addressed to the inbox associated with the user and comprises message content, the initial message is associated with the TTL flag and is being sent in accordance with the SL protocol enabling self-destruction.

19. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 , the method further comprising:

making a determination that the user's message account hosting the inbox of the user supports the SL protocol, wherein the message delivered to the inbox associated with the user is the initial message based on the determination.

20. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 18 , the method further comprising:

making a determination that user's message account hosting the inbox of the user does not support the SL protocol, wherein the message delivered to the inbox associated with the user is a link message comprising a link to the initial message based on the determination, the link message being compliant with the TTL restriction.

21. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 20 , the method further comprising:

receiving input indicative of selection of the link in the link message; and

causing display of a preview of the initial message at the user's device in response to the link selection input.

22. A system comprising:

a processor; and

a non-transitory storage medium for tangibly storing thereon program logic for execution by the processor, the program logic comprising:

delivering logic executed by the processor for delivering a message to an inbox associated with a user, the message is associated with a time-to-live (TTL) flag indicating that the message is being sent in accordance with a short-lived (SL) protocol enabling self-destruction of the message;

monitoring logic executed by the processor for monitoring an environment to detect an event indicative of an action of the user, respective to the message, satisfying a TTL restriction indicated by the TTL flag; and

causing logic executed by the processor for causing deletion of the message from the user's inbox in response to said event detection.
