Abstract

The present inventions, in one aspect, are directed to techniques and/or circuitry to applying a charge pulse to the terminals of the battery during a charging operation, measure a plurality of voltages of the battery which are in response to the first charge pulse, determine a charge pulse voltage (CPV) of the battery, wherein the charge pulse voltage is a peak voltage which is in response to the first charge pulse, determine whether the CPV of the battery is within a predetermined range or greater than a predetermined upper limit value and adapt one or more characteristics of a charge packet if the CPV is outside the predetermined range or is greater than a predetermined upper limit value.

Claims (30)

1. A method of charging batteries, comprising:

(a) monitoring, via measurements of a terminal voltage of a battery taken at a first measurement rate, the terminal voltage of the battery undergoing a charging process, wherein monitoring the terminal voltage of the battery comprises determining whether at least one measurement of the terminal voltage is greater than a predetermined upper limit value;

(b) repeatedly determining, at a second measurement rate, whether to adjust at least one characteristic of the charging process based at least on an indication of a State of Health (SOH) of the battery, wherein the second measurement rate is less than the first measurement rate; and

(c) adjusting the at least one characteristic of the charging process based on the determination in (b), wherein at least one characteristic of the charging process comprises at least one of: a shape of a charging signal, a duration associated with the charging signal, a duty cycle associated with the charging signal, a polarity associated with the charging signal, or an amplitude associated with the charging signal.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined upper limit value is determined at least in part on the determinations made at the second rate.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined upper limit value falls over time.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined upper limit value depends on the SOH of the battery.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined upper limit value depends on a capacity of the battery.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second rate comprises multiple charging cycles of the battery.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the charging process comprises applying charge to the battery at a first current, and wherein adjusting the at least one characteristic of the charging process comprises applying charge to the battery at a second current which is different than the first current.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the second current is less than the first current.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined upper limit value is retrieved from a database.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined upper limit value depends on an external temperature.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein adjusting the at least one characteristic of the charging process causes a subsequent measurement of the terminal voltage of the battery to be less than the predetermined upper limit value.

12. A system for charging batteries, comprising:

monitoring and control circuitry configured to:

(a) monitor, via measurements of a terminal voltage of a battery taken at a first measurement rate, the terminal voltage of the battery undergoing a charging process, wherein monitoring the terminal voltage of the battery comprises determining whether at least one measurement of the terminal voltage is greater than a predetermined upper limit value;

(b) repeatedly determine, at a second measurement rate, whether to adjust at least one characteristic of the charging process based at least on an indication of a State of Health (SOH) of the battery, wherein the second measurement rate is less than the first measurement rate; and

(c) adjust the at least one characteristic of the charging process based on the determination in (b), wherein at least one characterstic of the charging process comprises at least one of: a shape of a charging signal, a duration associated with the charging signal, a duty cycle associated with the charging signal, a polarity associated with the charging signal, or an amplitude associated with the charging signal.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined upper limit value is determined at least in part on the determinations made at the second rate.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined upper limit value falls over time.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined upper limit value depends on the SOH of the battery.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined upper limit value depends on a capacity of the battery.

17. The system of claim 12 , wherein the second rate comprises multiple charging cycles of the battery.

18. The system of claim 12 , wherein the charging process comprises applying charge to the battery at a first current, and wherein adjusting the at least one characteristic of the charging process comprises applying charge to the battery at a second current which is different than the first current.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the second current is less than the first current.

20. The system of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined upper limit value is retrieved from a database.

21. The system of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined upper limit value depends on an external temperature.

22. The system of claim 12 , wherein adjusting the at least one characteristic of the charging process causes a subsequent measurement of the terminal voltage of the battery to be less than the predetermined upper limit value.

23. The method of claim 1 , wherein the battery is a lithium-ion battery.
