Abstract

A roof mount assembly mounts a structure to a roof having a rafter and a substrate supported by the rafter. The roof mount assembly includes a piece of flashing positioned on the substrate. The flashing includes a first surface, a second surface opposite the first surface and an aperture extending through the flashing. A fastener extends through the flashing aperture. A bracket is connected to the flashing via the fastener, and the bracket is sized to support at least one roof-mounted structure on the roof. A seal is positioned between the flashing aperture and the fastener. The seal is sized to form a water-tight seal with the aperture to inhibit flow of fluid through the aperture. The seal includes a first portion and a second portion, in which the first portion is positioned to abut the flashing first surface and the second portion is positioned to extend through the aperture.

Claims (35)

1. A roof mounting system, comprising:

a flashing having a top surface and a bottom surface, the flashing defining a projection extending from the top surface, the projection defining a first aperture through the flashing, the projection having a frustoconical profile;

a seal for inhibiting fluid flow through the first aperture, the seal insertable in the projection, the seal defining a second aperture through the seal;

a bracket comprising a flange and an elongate body coupled to and extending from the flange, the flange defining a third aperture, the flange configured to receive the projection;

a sealing washer installable on the bracket, the sealing washer defining a fourth aperture; and

a fastener installable through the fourth aperture, the third aperture, the second aperture, and the first aperture.

2. The roof mounting system of claim 1 , wherein the seal is installable through the first aperture.

3. The roof mounting system of claim 1 , wherein the seal comprises an end portion and a central tapered portion.

4. The roof mounting system of claim 1 , wherein the fastener is configured to compress the sealing washer, bracket, seal and flashing against a roof surface.

5. The roof mounting system of claim 1 , wherein the sealing washer comprises a polymeric portion.

6. The roof mounting system of claim 1 , wherein the third aperture has a concave interior side.

7. The roof mounting system of claim 1 , the seal having a frustoconical profile.

8. A roof mounting system, comprising:

a flashing having a top surface and a bottom surface, the top surface defining a first plane, the flashing defining a projection extending from the top surface, the projection having a first diameter in the first plane and a second diameter in a second plane that is parallel to and spaced above the first plane, the projection defining a first aperture through the flashing;

a seal for inhibiting fluid flow through the first aperture, the seal insertable in the projection, the seal having a tapered profile, the seal defining a second aperture through the seal;

a bracket comprising a flange and an elongate body coupled to and extending from the flange, the flange defining a third aperture, the flange configured to receive the projection;

a sealing washer installable on the bracket, the sealing washer defining a fourth aperture; and

a fastener installable through the fourth aperture, the third aperture, the second aperture, and the first aperture.

9. The roof mounting system of claim 8 , wherein the seal is installable through the first aperture.

10. The roof mounting system of claim 8 , wherein the seal comprises an end portion and a central tapered portion.

11. The roof mounting system of claim 8 , wherein the fastener is configured to compress the sealing washer, bracket, seal and flashing against a roof surface.

12. The roof mounting system of claim 8 , wherein the third aperture has a concave interior side.

13. The roof mounting system of claim 8 , the seal having a frustoconical profile.

14. A roof mounting system, comprising:

a flashing having a top surface and a bottom surface, the top surface defining a first plane, the flashing defining a projection extending from the top surface, the projection having a first concave interior side;

a seal for inhibiting fluid flow through a first aperture, the seal having a truncated cone profile, the seal defining a second aperture through the seal;

a bracket comprising a flange and an elongate body coupled to and extending from the flange, the flange having a second concave interior side, the flange defining a third aperture, the flange configured to receive the projection;

a sealing washer installable on the bracket, the sealing washer defining a fourth aperture; and

a fastener installable through the fourth aperture, the third aperture, the second aperture, and the first aperture.

15. The roof mounting system of claim 14 , wherein the seal is installable through the first aperture.

16. The roof mounting system of claim 14 , wherein the seal comprises an end portion and a central tapered portion.

17. The roof mounting system of claim 14 , wherein the fastener is configured to compress the sealing washer, bracket, seal and flashing against a roof surface.

18. The roof mounting system of claim 14 , wherein the seal is installable in the projection.

19. The roof mounting system of claim 14 , wherein the seal comprises a second end and a tapered central portion.

20. The roof mounting system of claim 19 , wherein the seal comprises a first end that is a circular disk, the circular disk coupled to the tapered central portion.
