Default Playback Device Designation
Systems and methods discussed herein involve designating a default playback device in a local playback network. One method may involve determining that a networked microphone device is available for assignment to one or more playback zones within a local playback network, displaying a prompt to indicate at least one playback zone to which the network microphone device is to be assigned, receiving an input indicating a particular playback zone in the local playback system to which the network microphone device is to be assigned, and storing data indicating an assignment of the network microphone device to the particular playback zone.
1 . A system comprising:
at least one processor;
at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium; and
program instructions stored on the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium that are executable by the at least one processor to cause the system to:
detect an input via sat least one microphone of a network device;
determine that a playback device of a local playback network that includes the network device is to produce an output based on the detected input;
identify one or more playback devices of the local playback network that are each available to serve as a designated output device for inputs detected by the network device;
determine, from the one or more playback devices of the local playback network, a given playback device that is to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device; and
cause the given playback device to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor to cause the system to determine, from the one or more playback devices of the local playback network, the given playback device that is to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device further comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor to cause the system to:
determine that the given playback device is in closest physical proximity to a user of the local playback network.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor to cause the system to determine, from the one or more playback devices of the local playback network, the given playback device that is to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device further comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor to cause the system to:
determine that the given playback device is associated with a given playback zone of the local playback network that has been designated as an output zone for inputs detected by the network device.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor to cause the system to determine, from the one or more playback devices of the local playback network, the given playback device that is to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor to cause the system to:
cause a controller device to display a prompt to select, from a plurality of playback devices of the local playback network, at least one playback device with which the network device is to be associated;
receive, from the controller device, an indication of user input selecting the given playback device as the at least one playback device with which the network device is to be associated; and
based on the indication, determine that the given playback device is to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device.
5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the input comprises audio input detected by the at least one microphone of the network device.
6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the given playback device comprises a video display.
7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor to cause the system to cause the given playback device to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor to cause the system to:
associate the given playback device with the network device such that the given playback device is configured to serve as the designated output device for inputs received via the at least one microphone of the network device; and
cause data to be stored indicating the association of the given playback device with the network device.

The system of claim 7 , wherein the program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor to cause the system to cause data to be stored indicating the association of the given playback device with the network device comprise program instructions that are executable by the at least one processor to cause the system to:
transmit, to a cloud-based computing system, the data indicating the association of the given playback device with the network device.
9 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising program instructions stored on the at least one non-transitory computer-readable medium that are executable by the at least one processor to cause the system to:
cause the given playback device to output a response based on the input detected by the network device.
10 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium, wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium is provisioned with program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause a system to:
detect an input via at least one microphone of a network device;
determine that a playback device of a local playback network that includes the network device is to produce an output based on the detected input;
identify one or more playback devices of the local playback network that are each available to serve as a designated output device for inputs detected by the network device;
determine, from the one or more playback devices of the local playback network, a given playback device that is to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device; and
cause the given playback device to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device.
11 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the system to determine, from the one or more playback devices of the local playback network, the given playback device that is to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device further comprise program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the system to:
determine that the given playback device is in closest physical proximity to a user of the local playback network.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the system to determine, from the one or more playback devices of the local playback network, the given playback device that is to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device further comprise program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the system to:
determine that the given playback device is associated with a given playback zone of the local playback network that has been designated as an output zone for inputs detected by the network device.
13 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the system to determine, from the one or more playback devices of the local playback network, the given playback device that is to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device comprise program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the system to:
cause a controller device to display a prompt to select, from a plurality of playback devices of the local playback network, at least one playback device with which the network device is to be associated;
receive, from the controller device, an indication of user input selecting the given playback device as the at least one playback device with which the network device is to be associated; and
based on the indication, determine that the given playback device is to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device.
14 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the input comprises audio input detected by the at least one microphone of the network device.
15 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the given playback device comprises a video display.

The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the system to cause the given playback device to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device comprise program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the system to:
associate the given playback device with the network device such that the given playback device is configured to serve as the designated output device for inputs received via the at least one microphone of the network device; and
cause data to be stored indicating the association of the given playback device with the network device.
17 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the system to cause data to be stored indicating the association of the given playback device with the network device comprise program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the system to:
transmit, to a cloud-based computing system, the data indicating the association of the given playback device with the network device.
18 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium is also provisioned with program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the system to:
cause the given playback device to output a response based on the input detected by the network device.
19 . A method carried out by a system, the method comprising:
detecting an input via at least one microphone of a network device;
determining that a playback device of a local playback network that includes the network device is to produce an output based on the detected input;
identifying one or more playback devices of the local playback network that are each available to serve as a designated output device for inputs detected by the network device;
determining, from the one or more playback devices of the local playback network, a given playback device that is to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device; and
causing the given playback device to serve as the designated output device for inputs detected by the network device.
20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the given playback device comprises a video display.
