Abstract

Systems and methods for joint replacement are provided. The systems and methods can include a surgical orientation device and/or a reference sensor device. The surgical orientation device and orthopedic fixtures can be used to locate the orientation of an axis in the body, to adjust an orientation of a cutting plane or planes along a bony surface, to distract a joint, to measure an angle, to orient a cutting guide, to orient a resection guide, to resect the femur, or to otherwise assist in an orthopedic procedure or procedures.

Claims (40)

1 .- 68 . (canceled)

69 . An orthopedic system comprising:

a tibial member configured to contact a tibia;

a femoral member configured to contact a femur;

an adjustment device coupling the tibial member and the femoral member, the adjustment device enabling at least one degree of freedom between the tibial member and the femoral member;

a surgical orientation device coupled or configured to couple to one of the tibial member or the femoral member, the surgical orientation device comprising:

a housing, and

an inertial sensor configured to monitor the orientation of the surgical orientation device; and

a reference sensor device coupled or configured to couple to the other of the tibial member or the femoral member, the reference sensor device comprising:

a housing, and

an inertial sensor configured to monitor the orientation of the reference sensor device.

70 . The system of claim 69 , wherein the surgical orientation device and the reference sensor device are configured to measure an extension gap.

71 . The system of claim 69 , wherein the surgical orientation device and the reference sensor device are configured to measure a flexion gap.

72 . The system of claim 69 , wherein the adjustment device enables the femoral member to translate relative to the tibial member.

73 . The system of claim 69 , wherein the adjustment device enables the femoral member to rotate relative to the tibial member.

74 . The system of claim 69 , wherein the surgical orientation device and/or the reference sensor device are configured to store data related to a distraction.

75 . The system of claim 69 , wherein the surgical orientation device and/or the reference sensor device are configured to store a distraction distance when the leg is in extension.

76 . The system of claim 69 , wherein the surgical orientation device and/or the reference sensor device are configured to store a distraction distance when the leg is in flexion.

77 . The system of claim 69 , further comprising a femoral jig assembly comprising a first coupling device and a second coupling device, wherein the first coupling device is configured to couple the surgical orientation device and the femoral jig assembly, wherein the second coupling configured to couple the reference sensor device and the femoral jig assembly.

78 . The system of claim 69 , wherein the femoral member is configured to contact a resected surface of the femur.

79 . The system of claim 69 , further comprising a tibial jig assembly comprising a first interface and a second interface, wherein the first interface is configured to couple the surgical orientation device and the tibial jig assembly, wherein the second interface is configured to couple the reference sensor device and the tibial jig assembly.

80 . The system of claim 69 , wherein the surgical orientation device is configured to display information in real-time.

81 . The system of claim 69 , wherein the tibial member is configured to contact a resected surface of the tibia.

82 . An orthopedic orientation system comprising:

a tibial member configured to contact a tibia;

a femoral member configured to contact a femur;

an adjustment device coupling the tibial member and the femoral member, the adjustment device enabling at least one degree of freedom between the tibial member and the femoral member;

a surgical orientation device coupled or configured to couple to one of the tibial member or the femoral member, the surgical orientation device comprising:

a housing, and

an inertial sensor; and

a reference sensor device coupled or configured to couple to the other of the tibial member or the femoral member, the reference sensor device comprising:

a housing, and

an inertial sensor; and

a mounting feature configured to allow a drill guide to be mounted parallel to the tibial member.

83 . The system of claim 82 , wherein the mounting feature remains in position as the femoral member rotates.

84 . The system of claim 82 , further comprising the drill guide.

85 . The system of claim 82 , wherein a display screen of the surgical orientation device is configured to display a measurement to facilitate one or more cuts.

86 . The system of claim 85 , wherein the measurement is a distraction distance or an angle.

87 . The system of claim 82 , wherein the drill guide is configured to allow a user to place one or more pins to aid in mounting a cutting block.

88 . The system of claim 82 , wherein the drill guide is a modular device configured to be coupled to and decoupled from the mounting feature.
