Abstract

An apparatus for steerable x-ray inspection of a sample includes an outer housing that can be inserted into an interior of the sample via a flexible insertion member; an x-ray source within the outer housing that can output source x-rays into the sample; an x-ray detector within the housing and capable of detecting fluorescence x-rays emitted from the sample upon excitation by the source x-rays; and a steering device coupled to an end of the insertion member and configured to adjust, selectively, a position of the flexible insertion member for steering the outer housing within the sample.

Claims (28)

1 . An apparatus for steerable x-ray inspection of a sample, comprising:

an outer housing configured to be inserted into an interior of the sample via a flexible insertion member;

an x-ray source within the outer housing and configured to output source x-rays into the sample;

an x-ray detector within the housing and configured to detect fluorescence x-rays emitted from the sample upon excitation by the source x-rays; and

a steering device coupled to an end of the insertion member and configured to adjust, selectively, a position of the flexible insertion member for steering the outer housing within the sample.

2 . An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the steering device includes a steerable cable.

3 . An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the steering device further includes a camera configured to provide a view inside the sample for controlling adjustment of the position of the flexible insertion member.

4 . An apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the camera is configured to provide the view to an operator via a wireless signal.

5 . An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the insertion member includes markings at an outer surface indicating insertion depth of the outer housing within the sample.

6 . An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the insertion member includes an electronic encoder indicating insertion depth of the outer housing within the sample.

7 . An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the outer housing has a diameter that is less than or equal to 0.75 inch.

8 . An apparatus according to claim 7 , wherein the diameter is less than or equal to 0.5 inch.

9 . An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the x-ray source is a radioactive x-ray source.

10 . An apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein the radioactive x-ray source is selected from the group consisting of Co-57, Cd-109, and combinations thereof.

11 . An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the x-ray source is an x-ray tube.

12 . An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the x-ray detector is selected from the group consisting of a silicon drift detector, a silicon photodiode, a cadmium telluride detector, a cadmium zinc telluride detector, and combinations thereof.

13 . An apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a controller communicatively coupled to the x-ray detector, the controller configured to determine a presence of a set of materials contained within the sample based on the fluorescence x-rays, the set of materials including at least one material.

14 . An apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein the set of materials includes lead.

15 . An apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein the controller is configured to display a camera image received from the steering device.

16 . A method of steering for x-ray inspection of a sample, the method comprising:

inserting an outer housing into an interior of the sample via a flexible insertion member;

outputting source x-rays into the sample from within the outer housing;

detecting fluorescence x-rays emitted from the sample upon excitation by the source x-rays; and

steering the outer housing within the sample by selectively adjusting a position of the flexible insertion member.

17 . A method according to claim 16 , wherein the adjusting the position of the flexible insertion member includes using a steerable cable.

18 . A method according to claim 16 , wherein the adjusting the position of the flexible insertion member includes using a view of the interior of the sample from a camera coupled to the flexible insertion member.

19 . A method according to claim 18 , wherein the adjusting the position of the flexible insertion member further includes providing the view to an operator via a wireless signal.

20 . A method according to claim 16 , further including determining, based on the fluorescence x-rays, a presence of a set of materials contained within the sample, the set of materials including at least one material.
