Abstract

Data analytics systems are described herein which may provide requests for file tiering to one or more file servers. The data analytics systems may receive metadata and/or event data from one or more file servers and may utilize the metadata and/or event data to select files for tiering. In some examples, files may be selected using a sliding window methodology. In some examples, files may be selected in part based on user behavior with the files in the file system. In some examples, file analytics systems may send requests to retry tiering operations which failed. The retry requests may be sent in a manner that is based on the error which caused the failure.

Claims (67)

1 . At least one non-transitory computer readable medium encoded with instructions which, when executed, cause a system to perform operations comprising:

receive a tiering policy, at a virtualized file server, provided by a user, the tiering policy specifying a tiering policy time range for tiering files stored in a file system;

implement the tiering policy based at least on selection identifying one or more of the files associated with the tiering policy time range;

identify a first set of files in the file system having last access times within a first time range, the first time range within the tiering policy time range;

identify a subset of the first set of files based on file size;

request tiering of the subset of the first set of files;

identify a second set of files in the file system having last access times within a second time range, the second time range within the tiering policy time range;

identify a subset of the second set of files based on file size; and

request tiering of the subset of the second set of files, after said request tiering of the subset of the first set of files.

2 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the first time range and the second time range are adjacent time ranges.

3 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein said identify the first set of files comprises access a datastore containing information about the first set of files in the file system based on metadata, event data, or combinations thereof, received from the file system.

4 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein said identify the subset of the first set of files based on file size comprises identify the subset of the first set of files having a file size larger than a threshold file size.

5 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein said request tiering of the subset of the first set of files comprises sending a tiering request for the subset of first set of files to a file server hosting the file system.

The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the file system is hosted by a distributed file server, and wherein the distributed file server includes a plurality of file server virtual machines, each of the plurality of file server virtual machines providing a single namespace of storage items in the file system.

7 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the file system includes a plurality of computing nodes, and wherein storage items of the file system are stored in a storage pool including local storage of the plurality of computing nodes.

8 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the first time range and the second time range are within a larger third time range provided by a user as the tiering policy.

9 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receive the tiering policy, the tiering policy including at least one factor based on user behavior in the file system;

run a process configured to access a datastore regarding files in the file system and select particular files for tiering based on the tiering policy, and wherein the datastore includes a record of the user behavior in the file system; and

request tiering of the particular files.

10 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the at least one factor comprises files which have not been accessed by a particular user within a particular third time range.

11 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the at least one factor comprises files which have only been read within a particular third time range.

12 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the particular files include files whose only user operations during the particular third time range were read operations.

13 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the tiering policy further includes at least one factor based on content of files in the file system.

14 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the tiering policy includes one or more exclusion criteria.

15 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receive an audit event from a file server hosting at least a portion of the file system, the audit event indicative of failure of a requested tiering operation, the audit event including an indication of an error associated with the failure;

store a status of the requested tiering operation in a datastore associated with an identification of a target file of the requested tiering operation;

run a process configured to select files for tiering, wherein the process evaluates information in the datastore regarding files in the file server, and select a target file associated with the failed requested tiering operation; and

request tiering of the selected files, including the target file associated with the failed requested tiering operation.

16 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the process selects the target file associated with the failed requested tiering operation based on a threshold time after the failure.

17 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the threshold time is based on the error.

18 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the error comprises network failure, and the threshold time is particular to network failure errors.

19 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the error comprises a sparse file error, and the threshold time is particular to sparse file errors.

20 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the status of the requested tiering operation is configured to be persistently stored between operations of the process.

21 . A method comprising:

receiving a tiering policy, at an analytics system, provided by a user, the tiering policy specifying a tiering policy time range for tiering files stored in a file system;

implementing, at the analytics system, the tiering policy based at least on selection criteria identifying one or more of the files associated with the tiering policy time range;

identifying, at the analytics system, a first set of files in the file system, hosted at least partially by a file server, the first set of files having last access times within a first time range, the first time range within the tiering policy time range;

requesting, by the analytics system, tiering of a subset of the first set of files based on file size;

identifying, at the analytics system, a second set of files in the file system having last access times within a second time range;

requesting, by the analytics system, tiering of a subset of the second set of files based on file size, after said requesting tiering of the subset of the first set of files;

tiering the subset of the first set of files at the file server responsive to said requesting the tiering of the subset of the first set of files; and

tiering the subset of the second set of files at the file server responsive to said requesting tiering of the subset of the second set of files.

The method of claim 21 further comprising wherein said identifying the first set of files comprises accessing a datastore at the analytics system, the datastore containing information about the first set of files in the file system based on metadata, event data, or combinations thereof, received from the file system.

23 . The method of claim 21 wherein the first time range and the second time range are adjacent time ranges.

24 . The method of claim 21 , further comprising:

accessing a datastore at the analytics system, the datastore including a record of user behavior in the file system;

identifying, based on the datastore, particular files for tiering based on the user behavior in the file system; and

requesting the file server tier the particular files.

25 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the particular files include files whose only user operations during a particular third time range were read operations.

26 . The method of claim 21 , further comprising:

receiving, at the analytics system, an audit event from the file server, the audit event indicative of failure of a requested tiering operation, the audit event including an indication of an error associated with the failure; and

storing a status of the requested tiering operation in a datastore associated with an identification of a target file of the requested tiering operation.

27 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising:

evaluating information in the datastore of the analytics system regarding files in the file server, and selecting a target file associated with the failed requested tiering operation; and

requesting tiering of the selected files, including the target file associated with the failed requested tiering operation.

28 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 , wherein said determine files further comprises:

receive file server statistics; and

control a number of tiering instructions responsive, at least in part, of the file server statistics.

29 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 28 , wherein said control is further responsive to current state of files.

30 . The method of claim 21 , wherein said determining files further comprises:

receive file server statistics; and

controlling a number of tiering instructions responsive, at least in part, of the file server statistics.

31 . The method of claim 30 , wherein said controlling is further responsive to current state of files.

32 . The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 28 , wherein the file server statistics include a network bandwidth, a number of pending tiering requests, or a combination thereof.

33 . The method of claim 30 , wherein the file server statistics include a network bandwidth, a number of pending tiering requests, or a combination thereof.
