Abstract

An elevator assembly for a harvester may include an elevator housing and an elevator extending within the elevator housing between a proximal end and a distal end. As such, the elevator may be configured to carry harvested crops between its proximal and distal ends. Furthermore, the elevator assembly may include a storage hopper extending from the elevator housing at a location adjacent to the distal end of the elevator. The storage hopper may include a conveyor extending within the storage hopper between a first end and a second end, with the conveyor configured to carry the harvested crops between its first and second ends towards a discharge opening of the storage hopper.

Claims (13)

1. A method for operating a harvester, the harvester comprising an elevator assembly including an elevator extending between a proximal end and a distal end, the elevator assembly further including a storage hopper located adjacent to the distal end of the elevator, a conveyor extending within the storage hopper between a first end and a second end, and a door movable relative to a discharge opening of the storage hopper, the method comprising:

initially operating the harvester in a discharge harvesting mode such that harvested crops are delivered to the conveyer from the distal end of the elevator, conveyed between the first and second ends of the conveyor, and subsequently discharged from the harvester through the discharge opening of the storage hopper, the door being positioned at an opened position relative to the discharge opening when in the discharge harvesting mode;

receiving an input associated with transitioning operation of the harvester from the discharge harvesting mode to a storage harvesting mode;

upon receipt of the input, moving the door relative to the discharge opening from the opened position to a closed position and reducing an operating speed of the conveyer,

wherein the harvested crops are prevented from being discharged from the harvester when the door is at the closed position such that the harvested crops accumulate within a storage volume defined at least partially by the storage hopper.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein reducing the operating speed of the conveyer comprises reducing the operating speed to zero such that operation of the conveyor is halted.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising reducing an operating speed of the elevator upon receipt of the input.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein reducing the operating speed of the elevator comprises reducing the operating speed of the elevator independent of any reductions to the operating speed of the conveyor.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein moving the door relative to the discharge opening from the opened position to the closed position comprises controlling an operation of a door actuator coupled to the door, the door actuator being configured to move the door between the opened and closed positions.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving a second input associated with transitioning the harvester back to the discharge harvesting mode.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising, upon receipt of the second input, moving the door relative to the discharge opening from the closed position to the opened position and increasing the operating speed of the conveyer, the door exposing the discharge opening when at the opened position to allow the harvested crops to be discharged from the harvester.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising increasing an operating speed of the elevator upon receipt of the second input.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the harvester comprises a chopper assembly configured to process the harvested crops, the elevator being positioned downstream of the chopper assembly such that the harvested crops processed by the chopper assembly are received by the elevator.
