Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed for wireless power delivery that can provide wireless power to a wireless power receiver (WPR). A wireless power transmission system (WPTS) can include a transceiver. The WPTS can include a controller operably coupled to the transceiver. The controller can direct the transceiver to transmit a discovery signal. The controller can direct the transceiver to listen for a backscatter signal transmitted by a WPR responsive to the discovery signal being transmitted. The controller can determine a location of the WPR based on the backscatter signal and in response to the backscatter signal being received by the transceiver. The controller can direct the transceiver to transmit a wireless power signal to the location of the WPR.

Claims (35)

1 . A wireless power transmission system (WPTS) comprising:

a transceiver; and

a controller operably coupled to the transceiver and configured to:

direct the transceiver to transmit a discovery signal;

direct the transceiver to listen for a backscatter signal transmitted by a wireless power receiver (WPR) responsive to the discovery signal being transmitted;

determine a location of the WPR based on the backscatter signal and in response to the backscatter signal being received by the transceiver; and

direct the transceiver to transmit a wireless power signal (WPS) to the location of the WPR.

2 . The WPTS of claim 1 , wherein to determine the location of the WPR, the controller is further configured to compute a complex conjugate of a phase of the backscatter signal.

3 . The WPTS of claim 2 , wherein the controller is further configured to determine, based on the complex conjugate, an antenna configuration for use by the transmitter to transmit the WPS to the location of the WPR.

4 . The WPTS of claim 3 , wherein to direct the transceiver to transmit the WPS to the location of the WPR, the controller is further configured to direct the transceiver to transmit the WPS using the antenna configuration.

5 . The WPTS of claim 1 , wherein the transceiver is configured to receive a data communication signal transmitted at a first frequency by the WPS and the backscatter signal transmitted by the WPS at a second frequency different from the first frequency.

6 . The WPTS of claim 5 , wherein the transceiver is further configured to receive the data communication signal frequency multiplexed with the backscatter signal.

7 . The WPTS of claim 5 , wherein the transceiver is further configured to receive both the backscatter signal and the data communication signal as modulated signals.

8 . The WPTS of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to direct the transceiver to cease transmission of the WPS to the location of the WPR in response to the WPS being transmitted to the location of the WPS for a predetermined time period.

9 . The WPTS of claim 1 further comprising the WPR.

10 . A method of operating a wireless power transmission system (WPTS), the method comprising:

directing, by a controller of the WPTS, a transceiver of the WPTS to transmit a discovery signal;

directing, by the controller, the transceiver to listen for a backscatter signal transmitted by a wireless power receiver (WPR) in response to receipt of the discovery signal;

receiving, by the transceiver, the backscatter signal from the WPR;

determining, by the controller and in response to receiving the backscatter signal, a location of the WPR based on the backscatter signal; and

directing, by the controller, the transceiver to transmit a wireless power signal (WPS) to the location of the WPR.

11 . The method of claim 10 further comprising generating, by the controller, the discovery signal as a pulse interval modulated signal capable of being transduced by the WPR to thereby provide power to the WPR.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein directing the transceiver to listen for the backscatter signal comprises directing the transceiver to listen for a modulated backscatter signal transmitted by the WPR.

13 . The method of claim 10 , wherein determining the location of the WPR comprises determining a range from the transceiver to the WPR based on the backscatter signal.

14 . The method of claim 10 , wherein determining the location of the WPR comprises computing a complex conjugate of a phase of the backscatter signal.

15 . The method of claim 14 further comprising determining, by the controller and based on the complex conjugate, an antenna configuration for use by the transceiver to transmit the WPS to the location of the WPR.

16 . The method of claim 14 further comprising measuring, by the controller, the phase of the backscatter signal.

17 . The method of claim 14 , wherein directing the transceiver to transmit the WPS to the location of the WPR comprises directing the transceiver to transmit the WPS using the antenna configuration.

18 . The method of claim 10 , wherein determining the location of the WPR comprises extracting an unwrapped phase of the backscatter signal.

19 . The method of claim 10 further comprising directing the transceiver to cease transmission of the WPS to the location of the WPR in response to receipt, by the transceiver, of termination signal from the WPS.

20 . One or more non-transitory computer readable media having stored thereon program instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause a machine to:

direct a transceiver to transmit a discovery signal; and

direct the transceiver to listen for a backscatter signal transmitted by a wireless power receiver (WPR) in response to the discovery signal being transmitted;

determine a location of the WPR based on the backscatter signal and in response to the backscatter signal being received by the transceiver; and

direct the transceiver to transmit a wireless power signal to the location of the WPR.
