Abstract

An intelligent television system provides an operating system and an application framework for controlling a user interface to handle user input events from a handheld remote control. The remote control includes color keys that are configured for triggering different functions in different application panels displayed on the television.

Claims (21)

1. An intelligent television system, comprising:

a handheld remote control comprising at least one shortcut button, a first hotkey visually identified with a first color, a second hotkey visually identified with a second color, a third hotkey visually identified with a third color, and a fourth hotkey visually identified with a fourth color, the first color, the second color, the third color, and the fourth color being different; and

a television comprising an operating system kernel, a middle layer, and one or more applications, which are in communication with each other to perform functions of the intelligent television system, wherein:

the middle layer comprises an input event dispatcher for receiving user input events and sending the user input events to the one or more applications, the user input events comprising selecting one shortcut button and subsequently selecting a hotkey among the first hotkey, the second hotkey, the third hotkey, and the fourth hotkey on the handheld remote control;

in response to a selection of a first shortcut button on the handheld remote control when the television displays a home user interface, the input event dispatcher is configured to receive an input event associated with the first shortcut button and dispatch the input event to a first application for the first application to display a guide user interface comprising a content portion and one or more of: a first indicator having the first color of the first hotkey and indicating a first function for the first hotkey, a second indicator having the second color of the second hotkey and indicating a second function for the second hotkey, a third indicator having the third color of the third hotkey and indicating a third function for the third hotkey, and a fourth indicator having the fourth color of the fourth hotkey and indicating a fourth function for the fourth hotkey; and

the first function, the second function, the third function, and the fourth function, when indicated, are different from each other and are unavailable in the home user interface before entering the guide user interface.

2. The intelligent television system of claim 1 , wherein:

in response to a user navigation from the guide user interface to a second user interface of a second application, the second application is further configured to display a fifth indicator having the first color of the first hotkey and indicating a fifth function for the first hotkey; and

the fifth function for the first hotkey is different from the first function for the first hotkey.

3. The intelligent television system of claim 1 , wherein one of the first function, the second function, the third function, and the fourth function is configured for moving a user focus to a top of a scrollable collection of objects.

4. The intelligent television system of claim 1 , wherein the home user interface provides access to one or more of: applications, notifications, a web browser, and a system setting.

5. The intelligent television system of claim 1 , wherein the first indicator having the first color of the first hotkey is presented in a bar form.

6. The intelligent television system of claim 1 , wherein the home user interface is displayed in response to a second shortcut button on the handheld remote control being selected to enable a user access to a set of shortcuts on a displayed shortcut bar.

7. The intelligent television system of claim 1 , wherein the middle layer comprises one or more services which can be accessed by the one or more applications to provide general functions across two or more applications.

8. The intelligent television system of claim 7 , wherein the general functions comprise management of windows or surfaces.

9. The intelligent television system of claim 1 , wherein the middle layer comprises one or more services for general access and function of services that are associated with TV functionality.

10. The intelligent television system of claim 1 , wherein the handheld remote control comprises a setting button which, when selected, launches a setting application to access and change TV settings.

11. The intelligent television system of claim 10 , wherein the TV settings comprise a channel setting.

12. The intelligent television system of claim 11 , wherein the channel setting comprises setting for physical channels or virtual channels.

13. The intelligent television system of claim 12 , wherein the virtual channels are representations of data streams from corresponding content providers.

14. The intelligent television system of claim 1 , wherein the home user interface is displayed in response to a second shortcut button on the handheld remote control being selected to enable a user to determine what content is currently being offered on live TV.
