Abstract

Systems, methods and computer software are disclosed for providing for providing a 5G mobile network. In one embodiment a method is disclosed, comprising: providing a first base station having a first coverage area for a first Radio Access Network (RAN); providing a second base station having a second coverage area, the second coverage area within the first coverage area of the first base station for an overlay RAN; providing a 5G base station having a third coverage area, the third coverage area within the first coverage area and within the second coverage area and part of the overlay RAN; and determining, by a 5G Interworking Function (IWF) device, which subscribers are to be serviced by the overlay RAN and which subscribers are to be serviced by the first RAN.

Claims (31)

1 . A method for providing a 5G mobile network, comprising:

providing a first base station having a first coverage area for a first Radio Access Network (RAN);

providing a second base station having a second coverage area, the second coverage area within the first coverage area of the first base station for an overlay RAN;

providing a 5G base station having a third coverage area, the third coverage area within the first coverage area and within the second coverage area and part of the overlay RAN; and

determining, by a 5G Interworking Function (IWF) device, which subscribers are to be serviced by the overlay RAN and which subscribers are to be serviced by the first RAN.

2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising acting, by the 5G IWF, as a standard multi-Radio Access Technology (RAT) dual connectivity capable e NodeB towards an Evolved Packet Core (EPC).

3 . The method of claim 1 further comprising acting, by the 5G IWF, as an Evolved Packet Core (EPC) towards the overlay RAN.

4 . The method of claim 1 further comprising handing over coverage of a 5G Non-Stand Alone (NSA) User Equipment (UE) to an incumbent RAN when the 5G NSA UE moves out of coverage of the overlay RAN.

5 . The method of claim 1 wherein 5G Non-Stand Alone (NSA) User Equipment (UE) capable devices are 5G NSA subscription authorized.

6 . The method of claim 5 further comprising redirecting, by the 5G IWF, User Equipments (UEs) that are not 5G NSA subscription authorized to the incumbent RAN.

7 . A system for providing a 5G mobile network, comprising:

a first base station having a first coverage area for a first Radio Access Network (RAN);

a second base station having a second coverage area, the second coverage area within the first coverage area of the first base station for an overlay RAN;

a 5G base station having a third coverage area, the third coverage area within the first coverage area and within the second coverage area and part of the overlay RAN; and

a 5G Interworking Function (IWF) device;

wherein the IWF determines which subscribers are to be serviced by the overlay RAN and which subscribers are to be serviced by the first RAN.

8 . The system of claim 7 wherein the 5G IWF acts as a standard multi-Radio Access Technology (RAT) dual connectivity capable e NodeB towards an Evolved Packet Core (EPC).

9 . The system of claim 7 wherein the 5G IWF acts as an Evolved Packet Core (EPC) towards the overlay RAN.

10 . The system of claim 7 wherein the 5G Non-Stand Alone (NSA) User Equipment (UE) over hands over coverage to an incumbent RAN when the 5G NSA UE moves out of coverage of the overlay RAN.

11 . The system of claim 7 wherein 5G Non-Stand Alone (NSA) User Equipment (UE) capable devices are 5G NSA subscription authorized.

12 . The system of claim 11 wherein the 5G IWF redirects User Equipments (UEs) that are not 5G NSA subscription authorized to the incumbent RAN.

13 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium containing instructions for providing a 5G mobile network which, when executed, cause a system to perform steps comprising:

providing a first base station having a first coverage area for a first Radio Access Network (RAN);

providing a second base station having a second coverage area, the second coverage area within the first coverage area of the first base station for an overlay RAN;

providing a 5G base station having a third coverage area, the third coverage area within the first coverage area and within the second coverage area and part of the overlay RAN; and

determining, by a 5G Interworking Function (IWF) device, which subscribers are to be serviced by the overlay RAN and which subscribers are to be serviced by the first RAN.

14 . The computer-readable medium of claim 13 further comprising instructions for acting, by the 5G IWF, as a standard multi-Radio Access Technology (RAT) dual connectivity capable e NodeB towards an Evolved Packet Core (EPC).

15 . The computer-readable medium of claim 13 further comprising instructions for acting, by the 5G IWF, as an Evolved Packet Core (EPC) towards the overlay RAN.

16 . The computer-readable medium of claim 13 further comprising instructions for handing over coverage of a 5G Non-Stand Alone (NSA) User Equipment (UE) to an incumbent RAN when the 5G NSA UE moves out of coverage of the overlay RAN.

17 . The computer-readable medium of claim 13 further comprising instructions wherein 5G Non-Stand Alone (NSA) User Equipment (UE) capable devices are 5G NSA subscription authorized.

18 . The computer-readable medium of claim 17 further comprising instructions for redirecting, by the 5G IWF, User Equipments (UEs) that are not 5G NSA subscription authorized to the incumbent RAN.
