Abstract

A system may include a horizontal actuator to move a tray, to which a microwell plate and a microfluidic chip may be coupled. The system may include a vertical actuator to move a support arm, to which a plurality of pipettes or pipette tips may be coupled. The system may include a rotational actuator to move an angle bracket, to which a magnet may be coupled. The system may include a heater, through which the pipettes may extend. The system may include a pump to control the flow of fluids through the pipettes. Disclosed methods include performing PCR within the described system.

20 . A system, comprising:

a first pipette including a first pipette tip at a first end of the first pipette and a second end of the first pipette opposite to the first pipette tip along a first length of the first pipette;

a second pipette including a second pipette tip at a first end of the second pipette and a second end of the second pipette opposite to the second pipette tip along a second length of the second pipette;

a three-way connector that fluidically couples the second end of the first pipette to the second end of the second pipette and fluidically couples the second ends of the first and second pipettes to a feeder conduit; and

a heating element thermally coupled to at least a portion of the first and second lengths.

21 . The system of claim 20 wherein the heating element includes a first heating element thermally coupled to at least a portion of the first length of the first pipette and a second heating element thermally coupled to at least a portion of the second length of the second pipette.

22 . The system of claim 21 wherein the first and second heating elements are independently operable.

23 . The system of claim 20 , further comprising a first valve configured to seal the first length of the first pipette, a second valve configured to seal the first length of the first pipette, a third valve configured to seal the second length of the second pipette, and a fourth valve configured to seal the second length of the second pipette.

24 . The system of claim 23 wherein the heating element includes a first heating element thermally coupled to at least a portion of the first length of the first pipette and a second heating element thermally coupled to at least a portion of the second length of the second pipette.

25 . The system of claim 24 wherein the first and second heating elements are independently operable.

26 . The system of claim 24 wherein the first heating element is thermally coupled to at least a portion of the first length of the first pipette between the first valve and the second valve and the second heating element is thermally coupled to at least a portion of the second length of the second pipette between the third valve and the fourth valve.

27 . A system, comprising:

a first pipette including a first pipette tip at a first end of the first pipette and a second end of the first pipette opposite to the first pipette tip along a first length of the first pipette;

a second pipette including a second pipette tip at a first end of the second pipette and a second end of the second pipette opposite to the second pipette tip along a second length of the second pipette;

a first three-way connector that fluidically couples the second end of the first pipette to the second end of the second pipette and fluidically couples the second ends of the first and second pipettes to a first feeder conduit;

a third pipette including a third pipette tip at a first end of the third pipette and a second end of the third pipette opposite to the third pipette tip along a third length of the third pipette;

a fourth pipette including a fourth pipette tip at a first end of the fourth pipette and a second end of the fourth pipette opposite to the fourth pipette tip along a fourth length of the fourth pipette;

a second three-way connector that fluidically couples the second end of the third pipette to the second end of the fourth pipette and fluidically couples the second ends of the third and fourth pipettes to a second feeder conduit;

a first heating element thermally coupled to at least a portion of the first and third lengths; and

a second heating element thermally coupled to at least a portion of the second and fourth lengths.

28 . The system of claim 27 wherein the first and second heating elements are independently operable.

The system of claim 27 , further comprising a first valve configured to seal the first and third lengths of the first and third pipettes, a second valve configured to seal the first and third lengths of the first and third pipettes, a third valve configured to seal the second and fourth lengths of the second and fourth pipettes, and a fourth valve configured to seal the second and fourth lengths of the second and fourth pipettes.

30 . The system of claim 29 wherein the first and second heating elements are independently operable.

31 . The system of claim 29 wherein the first heating element is thermally coupled to at least a portion of the first and third lengths of the first and third pipettes between the first valve and the second valve and the second heating element is thermally coupled to at least a portion of the second and fourth lengths of the second and fourth pipettes between the third valve and the fourth valve.
