Abstract

A system, method, and article for delivering an antimicrobial agent into the lumen of a trans-dermal catheter are disclosed. In an embodiment, the system comprises an elongate member configured for insertion into a lumen of a catheter, and the elongate member containing an antimicrobial. An antimicrobial agent can be placed on an interior surface of a retaining ring.

Claims (47)

1. An antimicrobial cap that is configured to disinfect a medical connector or catheter when the antimicrobial cap is inserted into a channel containing a liquid in the medical connector or catheter, the antimicrobial cap comprising:

a threaded portion;

a male luer base extending along a longitudinal axis from a proximal portion of the antimicrobial cap, the male luer base having a cross-sectional diameter measured perpendicular to the longitudinal axis; and

an elongate portion extending along the longitudinal axis from a distal end of the male luer base, the elongate portion extending distally beyond the threaded portion from the distal end of the male luer base, the elongate portion having a solid cross-section and a water-soluble dry antimicrobial agent on at least an outside surface of the elongate portion, the cross-sectional diameter of the male luer base at the distal end is greater than a cross-sectional width of any portion of the elongate portion;

wherein the antimicrobial cap is configured so that, as the elongate portion is inserted into the channel in the medical connector or catheter, at least some of the water-soluble dry antimicrobial agent is configured to transfer from the elongate portion of the antimicrobial cap into the liquid in the medical connector or catheter, and the male luer base is configured to create a fluid tight seal with an inner wall of the medical connector or catheter, and at least some of the liquid in the medical connector or catheter is displaced to flow out of a proximal opening of the medical connector or catheter and onto an exterior surface of the medical connector or catheter; and

wherein the threaded portion is configured to attach to an outside surface of the medical connector or catheter.

2. A combination of the antimicrobial cap of claim 1 and the medical connector or catheter.

3. The antimicrobial cap of claim 1 , wherein the elongate portion includes a tapered region.

4. The antimicrobial cap of claim 1 , wherein the male luer base has a solid cross-section.

5. The antimicrobial cap of claim 1 , wherein the water-soluble dry antimicrobial agent comprises chlorhexidine.

6. The antimicrobial cap of claim 1 , wherein the male luer base includes a taper compatible with a connector on a hemodialysis catheter.

7. The antimicrobial cap of claim 1 , wherein the entire elongate portion and the male luer base have a solid cross section extending from a proximal end of the male luer base located within the threaded portion to a distal tip of the elongate portion.

8. The antimicrobial cap of claim 1 , wherein the threaded portion has a proximal opening and a distal opening.

9. The antimicrobial cap of claim 1 , wherein the threaded portion includes a soluble antimicrobial coating.

10. The antimicrobial cap of claim 1 , wherein the male luer base is tapered.

11. The antimicrobial cap of claim 10 , wherein the tapered male luer base is coupled to a proximal plate.

12. The antimicrobial cap of claim 1 , wherein the threaded portion is positioned on a retaining ring with a shoulder configured to engage with a portion of the male luer base to inhibit a rotation of the retaining ring relative to the male luer base.

13. The antimicrobial cap of claim 12 , wherein the retaining ring has retaining fingers that engage with a retaining flange attached to the male luer base to secure the retaining ring to the elongate portion.

14. An antimicrobial cap that is configured to disinfect a medical connector or catheter when the antimicrobial cap is inserted into a channel containing a liquid in the medical connector or catheter, the antimicrobial cap comprising:

a threaded portion;

a tapered male luer base extending along a longitudinal axis from a proximal portion of the antimicrobial cap, the tapered male luer base having a cross-sectional diameter measured perpendicular to the longitudinal axis;

an elongate portion with a solid cross-sectional region extending along the longitudinal axis from a distal end of the tapered male luer base, the elongate portion extending distally beyond the threaded portion from the distal end of the tapered male luer base, the cross-sectional diameter of the tapered male luer base at the distal end is greater than a cross-sectional width of the elongate portion adjacent to the distal end; and

a water-soluble dry antimicrobial agent along an outside surface of the elongate portion in a location that is configured to contact the liquid when the antimicrobial cap is inserted into the medical connector or catheter;

wherein the antimicrobial cap is configured so that as the elongate portion is inserted into the channel in the medical connector or catheter, at least some of the water-soluble dry antimicrobial agent is configured to transfer from the elongate portion of the antimicrobial cap into the liquid in the medical connector or catheter, and the tapered male luer base is configured to create a fluid tight seal with an inner wall of the medical connector or catheter, and at least some of the liquid in the medical connector or catheter is displaced to flow out of a proximal opening of the medical connector or catheter and onto an exterior surface of the medical connector or catheter; and

wherein the threaded portion is configured to attach to an outside surface of the medical connector or catheter.

15. A combination of the antimicrobial cap of claim 14 and the medical connector or catheter.

16. The antimicrobial cap of claim 14 , wherein the tapered male luer base includes a solid cross-sectional region.

17. The antimicrobial cap of claim 11 , wherein the tapered male luer base is shorter than the elongate portion.

18. The antimicrobial cap of claim 14 , wherein the threaded portion is positioned on a retaining ring with a shoulder configured to secure the elongate portion.

19. The antimicrobial cap of claim 14 , wherein the tapered male luer base has a taper in order to fit within a connector on a hemodialysis catheter.

20. The antimicrobial cap of claim 14 , wherein the entire elongate portion and the tapered male luer base has a solid cross section, extending from a proximal end of the tapered male luer base located within the threaded portion to a distal tip of the elongate portion.

21. The antimicrobial cap of claim 14 , wherein the threaded portion is positioned on a retaining ring with a shoulder configured to engage with a portion of the tapered male luer base to inhibit a rotation of the retaining ring relative to the tapered male luer base.

22. The antimicrobial cap of claim 21 , wherein the retaining ring has retaining fingers that engage with a retaining flange attached to the tapered male luer base to secure the retaining ring to the tapered male luer base.

23. An antimicrobial cap that is configured to disinfect a medical connector or catheter when the antimicrobial cap is inserted into a channel containing a liquid in the medical connector or catheter, the antimicrobial cap comprising:

a threaded portion having a proximal opening and a distal opening;

a proximal plate coupled to a tapered male luer base formed separately from the threaded portion; and
