Abstract

Described embodiments are directed toward prosthetic valve leaflets of a particular shape that allows redundant coaptation height in the leaflets when a planar segment is present in each leaflet.

Claims (36)

1 . A prosthetic heart valve comprising:

an annular frame; and

a film comprising a single piece of material attached to the frame and comprising three leaflets and three commissures coupled to the frame, wherein each leaflet is molded to have a three-dimensional shape when the leaflets are in a closed position under unpressurized conditions, wherein the three-dimensional shape comprises:

a central region having a base and an apex; and

first and second planar side regions on opposing sides of the central region, wherein the first planar side region comprises a first free edge portion that extends from a first commissure to the apex of the central region, and wherein the second planar side region comprises a second free edge portion that extends from a second commissure to the apex of the central region.

2 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the three-dimensional shape comprises:

the first planar side region extending from a first side of the leaflet to a first crease line at an interface with a first side of the central region, and

the second planar side region extending from a second side of the leaflet to a second crease line at an interface with a second side of the central region.

3 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 2 , wherein the first crease line extends from a first side of the base to the apex, and wherein the second crease line extends from a second side of the base to the apex.

4 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein, in a fully open position, the three leaflets form a generally circular valve orifice.

5 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the three-dimensional shape comprises each of the first free edge portion and the second free edge portion being linear.

6 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the three-dimensional shape comprises the first free edge portion being nonparallel to the second free edge portion.

7 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the three-dimensional shape comprises the first planar side region being noncoplanar with the second planar side region.

8 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the frame comprises three commissure posts that define an outflow end of the frame, and wherein each of the commissure posts has one of the commissures attached thereto.

9 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 8 , wherein each of the commissure posts comprises an axially extending strut that intersects with at least two angled struts of the frame.

10 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 1 , wherein the three-dimensional shape comprises the apex intersecting with a center portion of a coaption zone of the leaflet.

11 . A prosthetic heart valve comprising:

an annular frame; and

a valve member comprising a molded film that forms three leaflets and three commissures, wherein the commissures are coupled to the frame, wherein the valve member is molded to have a three-dimensional shape when the leaflets are in a closed position under unpressurized conditions,

wherein the three-dimensional shape comprises:

a central region of each leaflet having a base and an apex, the apex positioned closer to a longitudinal axis of the prosthetic heart valve than the base; and

a first planar region and a second planar region of each leaflet disposed on opposing sides of the respective central region.

12 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 11 , wherein the three-dimensional shape comprises, for each leaflet:

the first planar region forming a first free edge portion extending from a first commissure to the apex; and

the second planar region forming second free edge portion extending from a second commissure to the apex.

13 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 12 , wherein the three-dimensional shape comprises, for each leaflet, the first free edge portion on each of the leaflets being parallel to the second free edge portion on an adjacent one of the leaflets.

14 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 11 , wherein the three-dimensional shape comprises, for each leaflet, the first planar region intersecting with the central region at a first crease line, and the second planar region intersecting with the central region at a second crease line.

15 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 11 , wherein the three-dimensional shape comprises, for each leaflet, the apex of intersecting with a center portion of a coaption zone of the respective leaflet.

16 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 11 , wherein the three-dimensional shape comprises, the apices of the central regions of the leaflets being angled towards each other.

17 . A prosthetic heart valve comprising:

an annular frame; and

a film comprising a piece of material attached to the frame and comprising three leaflets and three commissures coupled to the frame, wherein each leaflet is molded to have a three-dimensional shape when the leaflets are in a closed position under unpressurized conditions, wherein the three-dimensional shape comprises:

a first crease line and a second crease line in the film that form a first planar side region, a second planar side region, and a central region disposed between the first planar side region and the second planar side region, wherein the first crease line and the second crease line intersect to define an apex of the central region.

The prosthetic heart valve of claim 17 , wherein the first planar side edge comprises a first free edge portion extending from a first commissure to the apex of the central region, and wherein the second planar side edge comprises a second free edge portion extending from a second commissure to the apex of the central region.

19 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 17 , wherein the three-dimensional shape comprises the central region having a base opposing the apex.

20 . The prosthetic heart valve of claim 19 , wherein the three-dimensional shape comprises the first crease line extending from a first side of the base to the apex, and wherein the second crease line extending from a second side of the base to the apex.
