Abstract

Provided herein are a variety of neural probe devices that include an agent delivery feature via an agent coating or an agent delivery mechanism of some kind. The probe devices can include depth or cortical probes or electrodes. The agent delivery mechanisms can include, for example, a dissolvable agent delivery structure, an agent delivery lumen, a magnetically deployable cover, an iontophoretic delivery mechanism, an agent delivery cavity defined in the neural probe, or an agent reservoir with an actuable gate.

Claims (38)

1 . A neural electrode device comprising:

(a) an electrode body;

(b) at least one electrode array associated with the electrode body; and

(c) a drug delivery lumen defined through a portion of the electrode body.

2 . The neural electrode device of claim 1 , wherein the drug delivery lumen is constructed and arranged to deliver at least one treatment agent to a target area of a patient's brain.

3 . The neural electrode device of claim 2 , wherein the at least one treatment agent reduces the inflammation of brain tissue or minimizes or eliminates a seizure.

4 . The neural electrode device of claim 2 , wherein the at least one treatment agent comprises a seizure treatment agent comprising a cannabinoid or cold saline.

5 . The neural electrode device of claim 1 , wherein the electrode body comprises an elongate tubular body, wherein the at least one electrode array is a thin film electrode array disposed on an outer surface of the tubular body, and wherein the neural electrode device is a depth electrode.

6 . The neural electrode device of claim 5 , wherein the drug delivery lumen is defined within the elongate tubular body such that the lumen is coaxial with a longitudinal axis of the elongate tubular body.

7 . The neural electrode device of claim 6 , further comprising a drug delivery opening defined at a distal end of the tubular body, wherein the drug delivery opening is in fluidic communication with the drug delivery lumen.

8 . The neural electrode device of claim 6 , further comprising a plurality of openings defined in the outer surface of the tubular body, wherein the plurality of openings are in fluidic communication with the drug delivery lumen.

9 . The neural electrode device of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of openings are disposed adjacent to the at least one electrode array.

The neural electrode device of claim 1 , further comprising an elongate structure coupled to the electrode body, wherein the electrode body comprises a thin film pad, wherein the at least one electrode array is disposed in the thin film pad, and wherein the neural electrode is a cortical electrode.

11 . The neural electrode device of claim 10 , wherein the drug delivery lumen is defined within the thin film pad.

12 . A neural depth electrode device comprising:

(a) an elongate tubular body;

(b) at least one thin film electrode array disposed on an outer surface of the elongate tubular body;

(c) a drug delivery lumen defined through a length of the elongate tubular body such that the lumen is coaxial with a longitudinal axis of the elongate tubular body; and

(d) a plurality of openings defined in the outer surface of the tubular body, wherein the plurality of openings are in fluidic communication with the drug delivery lumen and are disposed adjacent to the at least one thin film electrode array,

wherein the drug delivery lumen is constructed and arranged to deliver at least one treatment agent through the plurality of openings to a target area of a patient's brain.

The neural depth electrode device of claim 12 , further comprising a distal end opening defined at a distal end of the tubular body, wherein the distal end opening is in fluidic communication with the drug delivery lumen, wherein the drug delivery lumen is further constructed and arranged to deliver the at least one treatment agent through both the plurality of openings and the distal end opening to the target area of the patient's brain.

14 . The neural depth electrode device of claim 12 , wherein the at least one treatment agent reduces the inflammation of brain tissue or minimizes or eliminates a seizure.

15 . The neural depth electrode device of claim 12 , wherein the at least one treatment agent comprises a seizure treatment agent.

16 . A neural cortical electrode device comprising:

(a) a thin film pad;

(b) an elongate lead body attached to the thin film pad;

(c) at least one electrode array disposed in the thin film pad; and

(d) a drug delivery lumen defined within the thin film pad and the elongate lead body,

wherein the drug delivery lumen is constructed and arranged to deliver at least one treatment agent through the drug delivery lumen to a target area of a patient's brain.

17 . The neural cortical electrode device of claim 16 , wherein the at least one treatment agent reduces the inflammation of brain tissue or minimizes or eliminates a seizure.

18 . The neural cortical electrode device of claim 16 , wherein the at least one treatment agent comprises a seizure treatment agent.

19 . A method of implanting an intracranial electrode device, the method comprising:

forming at least one hole in a skull of a patient;

urging the intracranial electrode device through the at least one hole, wherein the intracranial electrode device comprises a drug delivery lumen defined through a portion of the intracranial electrode device;

positioning the intracranial electrode device at the target intracranial position;

actuating the electrode device to stimulate tissue at the target intracranial position; and

delivering at least one treatment agent to the target intracranial position through the drug delivery lumen.

20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the at least one treatment agent reduces the inflammation of brain tissue or minimizes or eliminates a seizure.
