Golf club
A golf club head has a body defining a crown opening and a sole opening, a forward portion of the crown opening having a lip recessed below an outer surface of the crown and extending rearwardly. A composite crown insert is connected to the lip and covers the crown opening. A ratio of an outer surface area of the body and a combined outer surface area of the crown and sole inserts is less than 0.9. The club head has a crown height as measured relative to a ground plane at address, and there is a first crown height at a face-to-crown transition zone, a second crown height at a crown-to-skirt transition zone, and a maximum crown height that is greater than the first and second crown heights, the maximum crown height being located on the crown insert at or rearward of the lip.
1 . A golf club head, comprising:
a front portion, a rear portion, a toe portion, a heel portion, a crown portion, and a sole portion;
a body at least partially defining the front portion, the rear portion, the toe portion, the heel portion, the crown portion, and the sole portion;
the sole portion being configured to retain a weight in a forward location, forward of a center-of-gravity of the golf club head;
the body being configured to retain a weight in a rearward location, rearward of the center-of-gravity of the golf club head and below the crown portion;
the body comprising a sole opening, a crown opening, and a face opening;
wherein the sole opening is at least partially located in the sole portion, the sole opening comprising a sole recess defined by a recessed sole ledge disposed along a perimeter of the sole opening;
a sole insert comprising a fiber-reinforced polymeric material joined to the recessed sole ledge and covering the sole opening;
an adjustable head-shaft connection assembly coupled to a hosel;
an adjustment port in the sole portion configured to receive a fastener configured to permit adjusting the adjustable head-shaft connection assembly;
wherein the golf club head has a Delta 1 of 16 to 30 mm, and Delta 1 is defined as the distance of a center of gravity of the golf club head rearward of a hosel axis of the club head;
wherein the golf club head has a moment of inertia about a golf club head CG x-axis that is greater than 270 kg·mm 2 ;
wherein the golf club head has a moment of inertia about a golf club head CG z-axis that is greater than 440 kg·mm 2 ;
a first weight, retained by the sole portion in the forward location;
a second weight, attached to the body in the rearward location below the crown portion;
wherein when the first weight is in the forward location, at least a portion of the first weight is forward of a forwardmost heel portion of the recessed sole ledge;
wherein when the first weight is in the forward location, at least a portion of the first weight is forward of a rearwardmost portion of the adjustment port in the sole portion and at least a portion of the first weight is toeward of the adjustment port; and
wherein the sole insert comprises a notch formed in a forward edge of the sole insert;
wherein the notch extends rearwardly from the forward edge; and
wherein the notch is configured to partially surround the first weight at least on a toeward side of the first weight.
2 . The golf club head according to claim 1 , wherein the first weight and the second weight are interchangeable.
3 . The golf club head according to claim 1 , wherein the front portion comprises a face formed from a fiber reinforced composite material.
4 . The golf club head according to claim 3 , further comprising a polymeric cap formed from polyurethane covering at least a portion of the face.
5 . The golf club head according to claim 1 , wherein when the first weight is in the forward location, at least a portion of the first weight is rearward of a portion of the recessed sole ledge.
6 . The golf club head according to claim 1 , wherein when the second weight is in the rearward location, at least a portion of the second weight is forward of a portion of the recessed sole ledge.
7 . The golf club head according to claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the crown portion comprises a fiber-reinforced polymeric material.
8 . The golf club head according to claim 7 , wherein the sole insert and the at least a portion of the crown portion comprising a fiber-reinforced polymeric material have a combined outer surface area of greater than 9000 mm 2 .

The golf club head according to claim 7 , wherein the sole insert and the at least a portion of the crown portion comprising a fiber-reinforced polymeric material have a combined outer surface area, and the body has an outer surface area, exclusive of the combined outer surface area of the sole insert and the at least a portion of the crown portion comprising a fiber-reinforced polymeric material, and a ratio of the outer surface area of the body to the combined outer surface area of the sole insert and the at least a portion of the crown portion comprising a fiber-reinforced polymeric material is less than 0.9.
10 . The golf club head according to claim 9 , wherein at least a portion of a forwardmost toe portion of the recessed sole ledge is forward of a forwardmost heel portion of the recessed sole ledge and at least a portion of the first weight is forward of the sole opening.
11 . The golf club head according to claim 10 , wherein when the first weight is in the forward location it is proximate to the adjustment port.
12 . The golf club head according to claim 7 , wherein at least a portion of the body configured to retain the second weight is formed from fiber-reinforced thermoplastic material.
13 . The golf club head according to claim 7 , wherein when the first weight is in the forward location, at least a portion of the first weight is forward of the sole opening.
14 . The golf club head according to claim 13 , wherein at least a portion of a forwardmost toe portion of the recessed sole ledge is forward of a forwardmost heel portion of the recessed sole ledge.
15 . The golf club head according to claim 7 , wherein when the first weight is in the forward location, at least a portion of the first weight is rearward of a portion of the recessed sole ledge.
16 . The golf club head according to claim 7 , wherein when the second weight is in the rearward location, at least a portion of the second weight is forward of a portion of the recessed sole ledge.
17 . The golf club head according to claim 7 , wherein the golf club head further comprises a rib coupled to the forward location and extending along the sole portion.
18 . The golf club head according to claim 7 , wherein the second weight has a mass that is greater than a mass of the first weight, and the mass of the second weight is 6 grams to 18 grams.
19 . The golf club head according to claim 7 , wherein the forward location defines a central axis, and the central axis passes through the crown portion and the sole portion.
20 . The golf club head according to claim 1 , wherein the golf club head further comprises a rib coupled to the forward location and extending along the sole portion.
21 . The golf club head according to claim 1 , wherein the second weight has a mass that is greater than a mass of the first weight, and the mass of the second weight is 6 grams to 18 grams.
22 . The golf club head according to claim 1 , wherein the forward location defines a central axis, and the central axis passes through the crown portion and the sole portion.
23 . A golf club head, comprising:
a front portion, a rear portion, a toe portion, a heel portion, a crown portion, and a sole portion;
a body at least partially defining the front portion, the rear portion, the toe portion, the heel portion, the crown portion, and the sole portion;
the sole portion being configured to retain a weight in a forward location, forward of a center-of-gravity of the golf club head, and
the body being configured to retain a weight in a rearward location, rearward of the center-of-gravity of the golf club head and below the crown portion; and
the body comprising a sole opening, a crown opening, and a face opening;
wherein the sole opening is at least partially located in the sole portion, the sole opening comprising a sole recess defined by a recessed sole ledge disposed along a perimeter of the sole opening;
a sole insert comprising a fiber-reinforced polymeric material joined to the recessed sole ledge and covering the sole opening;
a first weight, retained by the sole portion in the forward location; and
a second weight, attached to the body in the rearward location below the crown portion;
wherein the sole insert comprises a notch formed in a forward edge of the sole insert, the notch extends rearwardly from the forward edge, and the notch is configured to partially surround the first weight at least on a toeward side of the first weight.
24 . The golf club head according to claim 23 , further comprising:
an adjustable head-shaft connection assembly coupled to a hosel;
an adjustment port in the sole portion configured to receive a fastener configured to permit adjusting the adjustable head-shaft connection assembly;
wherein the second weight has a mass that is greater than a mass of the first weight, and the mass of the second weight is 6 grams to 18 grams;
wherein the first weight and the second weight are interchangeable; and
wherein the golf club head has a Delta 1 of 16 to 30 mm, and Delta 1 is defined as the distance of a center of gravity of the golf club head rearward of a hosel axis of the club head.
25 . The golf club head according to claim 24 , wherein:
the golf club head further comprises a rib coupled to the forward location and extending along the sole portion; and
the forward location defines a central axis, and the central axis passes through the crown portion and the sole portion.
