Abstract

A sequence of media items is obtained obtaining, at a first distribution site. Local media content to be inserted into the sequence of media items, which is transmitted by a second distribution site, is received at the first distribution site. The first distribution site also receives a control signal transmitted by the second distribution site. The control signal controls playout of the local media content in relation to the sequence of media items. The first distribution site transmits the local media content and the control signal to one or more dispersed transmission sites.

Claims (59)

1 . A method comprising:

obtaining, at a first distribution site, a sequence of media items;

receiving, at the first distribution site, local media content transmitted by a second distribution site, wherein the local media content is to be inserted into the sequence of media items;

receiving a control signal transmitted to the first distribution site by the second distribution site, wherein the control signal controls playout of the local media content in relation to the sequence of media items; and

transmitting the local media content and the control signal from the first distribution site to one or more dispersed transmission sites.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the sequence of media items has been pre-distributed to both the first distribution site and the one or more dispersed transmission sites.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the control signal controls playout synchronization of the local media content relative to the sequence of media items.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

transmitting the sequence of media items to the one or more dispersed transmission sites.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a plurality of control signals related to a plurality of local media content items; and

aggregating the plurality of control signals prior to transmitting the plurality of control signals from the first distribution site to the one or more dispersed transmission sites.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the control signal indicates a volume level adjustment to be applied to at least one of the sequence of media items or the local media content.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the control signal includes a surface control signal.

8 . A media distribution system comprising:

a first distribution site including a first processing system coupled to a communications network via a first communications interface;

a second distribution site including a second processing system coupled to the communications network via a second communications interface; and

one or more dispersed transmission sites coupled to the communications network via corresponding communications interfaces;

the first processing system is configured to

obtain a sequence of media items;

receive local media content transmitted from the second processing system, wherein the local media content is to be inserted into the sequence of media items;

receive a control signal transmitted from the second distribution site, wherein the control signal controls playout of the local media content in relation to the sequence of media items; and

transmit the local media content and the control signal from the first processing system to the one or more dispersed transmission sites.

9 . The media distribution system of claim 8 , wherein:

the sequence of media items has been pre-distributed to both the first distribution site and the one or more dispersed transmission sites.

10 . The media distribution system of claim 8 , wherein:

the control signal controls playout synchronization of the local media content relative to the sequence of media items.

11 . The media distribution system of claim 8 , the first processing system is further configured to:

transmit the sequence of media items to the one or more dispersed transmission sites.

12 . The media distribution system of claim 8 , the first processing system is further configured to:

receive a plurality of control signals related to a plurality of local media content items; and

aggregate the plurality of control signals prior to transmitting the plurality of control signals to the one or more dispersed transmission sites.

13 . The media distribution system of claim 8 , wherein:

the control signal indicates a volume level adjustment to be applied to at least one of the sequence of media items or the local media content.

14 . The media distribution system of claim 8 , wherein:

the control signal includes a surface control signal.

15 . A media distribution device comprising:

a processor;

a memory coupled to the processor, wherein the memory stores computer-executable instructions; and

the processor is configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to cause the media distribution device to

obtain a sequence of media items;

receive local media content transmitted from a second media distribution device, wherein the local media content is to be inserted into the sequence of media items;

receive a control signal transmitted from the second media distribution device, wherein the control signal controls playout of the local media content in relation to the sequence of media items; and

transmit the local media content and the control signal to one or more dispersed transmission sites.

16 . The media distribution device of claim 15 , wherein:

the sequence of media items has been pre-distributed to both the media distribution device and the one or more dispersed transmission sites.

17 . The media distribution device of claim 15 , wherein:

the control signal controls playout synchronization of the local media content relative to the sequence of media items.

18 . The media distribution device of claim 15 , wherein the processor is configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to cause the media distribution device to:

transmit the sequence of media items to the one or more dispersed transmission sites.

19 . The media distribution device of claim 15 , wherein the processor is configured to execute the computer-executable instructions to cause the media distribution device to:

receive a plurality of control signals related to a plurality of local media content items; and

aggregate the plurality of control signals prior to transmitting the plurality of control signals to the one or more dispersed transmission sites.

20 . The media distribution device of claim 15 , wherein:

the control signal includes at least one of a surface control signal and a volume control signal.
