Abstract

For more efficient use of the limited bandwidth in 5G and 6G communications, and to enable longer battery life in remote user devices, the user device can request that unnecessary downlink control messages be withheld. Instead, a custom search-space can be assigned to the user device, such that all downlink data messages will begin in one of the resource elements of the custom search-space, thereby greatly simplifying the user device's task of detecting its incoming messages in a stream of unrelated transmissions. In addition, the user device can request that the user device's identification code, and optionally the length of the data message, be prepended to the data message, for further assistance to low-cost reduced-capability user devices that do not require low latency.

Claims (28)

1. A method for a user device of a wireless network to receive messages, the method comprising:

a) transmitting, to a base station of the wireless network, a request message comprising:

i) a request for a custom search space;

ii) a request for one or more parameters of the requested custom search space; and

iii) a request that DCI (downlink control messages) to the user device be withheld;

b) receiving, from the base station, an assignment message comprising:

i) specification of an assigned custom search space;

ii) specification of one or more parameters of the assigned custom search space; and

iii) an indication that DCI messages to the user device will not be transmitted; and

c) receiving, from the base station, a data message that starts in the assigned custom search space.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the request message, the assignment message, and the data message are configured according to 5G or 6G technology.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the assigned custom search space comprises a particular symbol-time and a particular subcarrier in each slot, wherein the particular symbol-time is scheduled for downlink transmissions or is unscheduled.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data message starts in a first or second instance of the assigned custom search space, following the assignment message.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the data message starts at a predetermined time interval after the assignment message.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the request message further includes a request that each data message to the user device indicate, early in the data message, an indication of a length of the data message, wherein the indication of the length is early in the data message when the indication of the length is transmitted before a data portion of the data message.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the indication of the length of the data message begins in the assigned custom search space.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein:

a) an identification of the user device begins in the assigned custom search space; and

b) the indication of the length of the data message occurs between the identification of the user device and another part of the data message.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the request message further includes a request that each downlink data message indicate a length of the downlink data message.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the request message further includes a request that each downlink data message indicate an identification code of the user device.

11. Non-transitory computer-readable media in a base station of a wireless network, the non-transitory computer-readable media containing instructions that, when executed by a computing environment, cause a method to be performed, the method comprising:

a) receiving a request message from a user device of the wireless network, the request message comprising a request that no DCI (downlink control information) messages, configured to inform the user device of an imminent downlink data message, are to be transmitted to the user device; and then

b) without transmitting a DCI configured to inform the user device of a particular imminent downlink data message, transmitting the particular downlink data message to the user device.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 11 , wherein the request message further comprises a request that the base station assign, to the user device nonexclusively, a custom search space, wherein the custom search space comprises periodically recurring resource elements.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 12 , wherein the custom search space comprises a plurality of contiguous resource elements.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 12 , wherein the custom search space comprises a plurality of discontiguous resource elements.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 12 , wherein the particular downlink data message includes, starting in the custom search space, an identification code of the user device.
