Abstract

Fungal crosslinked structures, fungal crosslinking systems, and methods for crosslinking a fungal material. The crosslinked fungal material described herein comprises a variety of crosslinkers, crosslinking sites, and various combinations of crosslinks, each forming unique structures. The crosslinked fungal material comprises at least one crosslinking compound attached to a bonding site. The fungal crosslinking system includes a preparation unit, an impregnating unit, a crosslinking unit and a rinsing unit. The preparation unit may partially deacetylate chitin within the fungal material and within chitin nanowhiskers. The impregnating unit impregnates the fungal material with chitin nanowhiskers. The crosslinking unit is configured to crosslink the fungal material and chitin nanowhiskers via genipin to create a composite material. The rinsing unit rinses and removes unreacted genipin material thereby rendering a crosslinked composite material. The resulting crosslinked composite material is stronger and more flexible than the original fungal material with improved chemical and mechanical properties.

Claims (41)

1 . A fungal crosslinking system comprising:

a fungal material comprising hyphal cells, polysaccharides, and a chitin chain;

a preparation unit that at least partially deacetylates chitin within the fungal material to create a partially deacetylated chitin material;

a crosslinking unit crosslinks the fungal material and a composite material to yield a crosslinked composite material;

an impregnating unit that impregnates the fungal material with a chitin nanowhisker and the crosslinking unit; and

a rinsing unit that rinses the crosslinked composite material with water.

2 . The fungal crosslinking system of claim 1 wherein the fungal material further comprises a hydroxyl group bonding site and an acetamide group having a tannin bonding site.

3 . The fungal crosslinking system of claim 1 wherein the crosslinking unit links the fungal material to the hydroxyl group bonding sites of the composite material.

4 . The fungal crosslinking system of claim 1 wherein the rinsing unit neutralizes the crosslinked composite to an optimum pH range of 4-9.

5 . The fungal crosslinking system of claim 1 wherein the rinsing unit removes any unreacted material.

6 . The fungal crosslinking system of claim 1 wherein the preparation unit at least partially deacetylates an acetamide group to yield an amine group.

7 . The fungal crosslinking system of claim 1 wherein the crosslinking unit further comprises a crosslinking compound or molecule, the crosslinking compound or molecule comprising glutaraldehyde, phenolic compounds, syntans, metal complex, genipin, carbon-carbon bonding, or any combination thereof.

8 . The fungal crosslinking system of claim 1 further comprising a bonding unit to bond a material comprising a lubricant, a dye, or any combination thereof.

7 . The fungal crosslinking system of claim 1 wherein the crosslinking unit further comprises a bifunctional aldehyde or multifunctional aldehyde.

10 . A tanned mycelium comprising:

a chitin chain comprising an acetamide group and a tannin bonding site;

a crosslinking unit, wherein a tannin crosslinks the acetamide group to yield a crosslinked composite material;

a deacetylating unit that deacetylates the acetamide group to yield an amine group; and

a rinsing unit that rinses the crosslinked composite material with water.

11 . The tanned mycelium of claim 10 wherein the acetamide group creates an amide bonding site.

12 . The tanned mycelium of claim 10 wherein the rinsing unit neutralizes the crosslinked composite to an optimum pH range of 4-9.

13 . The tanned mycelium of claim 10 wherein the deacetylating unit deacetylates the chitin to yield chitosan.

14 . A fungal crosslinking system comprising:

polysaccharides, and a chitin chain;

a preparation unit that at least partially deacetylates chitin within the fungal material;

a crosslinking unit that crosslinks the fungal material and a composite material to yield a crosslinked composite material;

a genipin mixture mixed with the crosslinked composite material to create a genipin-fungal mixture;

an impregnating unit that impregnates the fungal material with a chitin nanowhisker and the crosslinking unit; and

a rinsing unit that rinses the crosslinked composite material with water.

15 . The fungal crosslinking system of claim 14 wherein the fungal material further comprises a hydroxyl group bonding site and an acetamide group having a tannin bonding site.

the crosslinked material exhibits tensile strength that is greater than the sum of the fungal material and secondary constituent alone;

the fungal material may crosslink to itself;

the fungal material may crosslink to the secondary constituent;

the secondary constituent may crosslink to itself; and

the tertiary compound may agglomerate into larger, polymeric chains that are then bonded to the fungal material and/or the secondary constituent.
