Abstract

A double nozzle for a laser processing head includes an inner body portion having an interior surface defining a bore for passing a laser beam, a first interface surface near a distal end of the inner body portion, the first interface surface including a plurality of channels, and an exterior surface near a proximal end of the inner body portion and shaped to engage the laser processing head. Each channel includes interior and exterior linear edges in a cross-section that passes though a central longitudinal axis of the double nozzle. The double nozzle also includes an outer body portion connected to the inner body portion. The outer body portion defines a jet surface, which together with the plurality of channels defines a corresponding plurality of auxiliary fluid flow paths about the bore and between the inner body portion and the outer body portion.

Claims (31)

1 . A nozzle for a laser processing cutting head, the nozzle including:

a unitary body comprising:

an interior surface defining a bore for passing a laser beam, the bore being aligned with a central longitudinal axis of the nozzle;

an exterior surface shaped to engage the laser processing head; and

a plurality of channels that defines a plurality of auxiliary fluid flow paths about the bore, in which an arrangement of the plurality of channels surrounds the bore in a concentric manner to prevent entrainment of air into a molten kerf, each channel including:

a first section having linear edges that are at a first angle with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the nozzle; and

a second section having linear edges that are at a second angle with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the nozzle, wherein the first angle is different from the second angle.

2 . The nozzle according to claim 1 , wherein the bore comprises a first bore section having a first bore cross-sectional area that is perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis of the nozzle and comprises a second bore section having a second bore cross-sectional area that is perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis of the nozzle, and wherein the first cross-sectional area is larger than the second cross-sectional area.

3 . The nozzle according claim 2 , wherein the first section of each channel of the plurality of channels includes a channel cross-sectional area that is perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the channel, and wherein the first bore cross-sectional area or the second bore cross-sectional area is larger than each channel cross-sectional area.

4 . The nozzle according claim 3 , wherein the channel cross-sectional area is 0.25-2.5 square millimeters.

5 . The nozzle according to claim 1 , wherein, for each channel of the plurality of channels, at least one of the linear edges in the first section is parallel to the central longitudinal axis of the nozzle.

6 . The nozzle according to claim 1 , wherein, for each channel of the plurality of channels, at least one of the linear edges of the second section extends towards the central longitudinal axis of the nozzle.

7 . The nozzle according to claim 1 , wherein each channel of the plurality of channels is arranged on a same circular path that is concentric with the bore.

8 . The nozzle according to claim 7 , wherein the plurality of channels is evenly distributed on the circular path.

9 . The nozzle according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of channels includes at least one channel that includes a cross-section that is in the shape of a circle.

10 . The nozzle according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of channels comprises at least one channel that includes a cross-section that is in the shape of an ellipse.

11 . A nozzle for a laser processing cutting head, the nozzle including a unitary body comprising:

an interior surface defining a bore for passing a laser beam, the bore being aligned with a central longitudinal axis of the nozzle;

an exterior surface shaped to engage the laser processing head; and

a plurality of circular channels that defines a plurality of auxiliary fluid flow paths about the bore, in which the plurality of circular channels is annularly arranged in a manner concentric with the bore to prevent entrainment of air into a molten kerf, each circular channel including:

a first section having linear edges that are at a first angle with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the nozzle; and

a second section having linear edges that are at a second angle with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the nozzle, wherein the first angle is different from the second angle.

12 . The nozzle according to claim 1 , wherein each circular channel has the same dimensions.

13 . The nozzle according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of circular channels comprises at least three to ten channels.

14 . The nozzle according to claim 1 , wherein the first section or the section of each channel of the plurality of circular channels includes a linear width of 0.25-1.5 millimeters.

15 . The nozzle of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of circular channels is in fluid communication with a plenum region of the nozzle.

16 . The nozzle according to claim 11 , wherein a plurality of gas dampening antechambers is fluidly connected to the plurality of circular channels, and wherein each of the gas dampening antechambers has a combined inlet and outlet.

17 . The nozzle according to claim 16 , wherein the plurality of gas dampening antechambers is configured to maintain a fixed volume of dampening gas.

18 . The nozzle according to claim 11 , wherein the plurality of circular channels is configured to produce a supersonic gas flow at pressures above approximately 15 psig.

19 . The nozzle according to claim 11 , wherein the nozzle is manufactured using a traditional turning operation.

20 . The nozzle according to claim 11 , wherein the nozzle is manufactured by three-dimensional printing.
