Abstract

This invention provides a means to identify unknown media programming using the audio component of said programming. The invention extracts audio information from the media received by consumer electronic devices such as smart TVs and TV set-top boxes then conveys said information to a remote server means which will in turn identify said audio information of unknown identity by way of testing against a database of known audio segment information. The system identifies unknown media programming in real-time such that time-sensitive services may be offered such as interactive television applications providing contextually related information or television advertisement substitution. Other uses include tracking media consumption among many other services.

Claims (49)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving one or more coefficients derived from an unknown media segment, wherein the unknown media segment is associated with media being presented by a display device;

identifying the unknown media segment using the one or more coefficients, wherein identifying the unknown media segment comprises:

adding a token to a bin associated with a known media segment based on a comparison of the one or more coefficients to coefficients of the known media segment stored in a first reference database;

determining that a quantity of tokens of the bin is greater than a threshold; and

assigning, to the unknown media segment, an identifier corresponding to the known media segment associated with the bin;

identifying an alternative media segment based on a known media segment that matches at least one coefficient of the one or more coefficients of the unknown media segment, wherein identifying the alternative media segment includes; and

transmitting a trigger signal to the display device, the trigger signal causing the display device to replace a subsequent media segment to be presented by the display device with the alternative media segment.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more coefficients are derived from an audio component of the unknown media segment.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more coefficients are derived from a video component of the unknown media segment.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein identifying the unknown media segment includes:

detecting one or more media alterations associated with the unknown media segment; and

identifying the unknown media segment by comparing the one or more coefficients to known coefficients associated with known media segments stored in a second reference database, wherein the second reference database is different from the first reference database.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 4 , wherein the one or more media alterations include an on-screen graphic.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the trigger signal is configured to cause the alternative media segment to be presented over the media being presented by a display device.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the trigger signal is configured to cause the alternative media segment to replace a portion of the unknown media segment.

8. A computing device comprising:

one or more processors; and

a non-transitory machine-readable storage medium containing instructions which when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations including:

receiving one or more coefficients derived from an unknown media segment, wherein the unknown media segment is associated with media being presented by a display device;

identifying the unknown media segment using the one or more coefficients, wherein identifying the unknown media segment comprises:

adding a token to a bin associated with a known media segment based on a comparison of the one or more coefficients to coefficients of the known media segment stored in a first reference database;

determining that a quantity of tokens of the bin is greater than a threshold; and

assigning, to the unknown media segment, an identifier corresponding to the known media segment associated with the bin;

identifying an alternative media segment based on a known media segment that matches at least one coefficient of the one or more coefficients of the unknown media segment, wherein identifying the alternative media segment includes; and

transmitting a trigger signal to the display device, the trigger signal causing the display device to replace a subsequent media segment to be presented by the display device with the alternative media segment.

9. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the one or more coefficients are derived from an audio component of the unknown media segment.

10. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the one or more coefficients are derived from a video component of the unknown media segment.

11. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein identifying the unknown media segment includes:

detecting one or more media alterations associated with the unknown media segment; and

identifying the unknown media segment by comparing the one or more coefficients to known coefficients associated with known media segments stored in a second reference database, wherein the second reference database is different from the first reference database.

12. The computing device of claim 11 , wherein the one or more media alterations include an on-screen graphic.

13. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the trigger signal is configured to cause the alternative media segment to replace a portion of the unknown media segment.

14. The computing device of claim 8 , wherein the trigger signal is configured to cause the alternative media segment to be presented over the media being presented by a display device.

15. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium containing instructions which when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations including:

receiving one or more coefficients derived from an unknown media segment, wherein the unknown media segment is associated with media being presented by a display device;

identifying the unknown media segment using the one or more coefficients, wherein identifying the unknown media segment comprises:

adding a token to a bin associated with a known media segment based on a comparison of the one or more coefficients to coefficients of the known media segment stored in a first reference database;

determining that a quantity of tokens of the bin is greater than a threshold; and

assigning, to the unknown media segment, an identifier corresponding to the known media segment associated with the bin;

identifying an alternative media segment based on a known media segment that matches at least one coefficient of the one or more coefficients of the unknown media segment, wherein identifying the alternative media segment includes; and

transmitting a trigger signal to the display device, the trigger signal causing the display device to replace a subsequent media segment to be presented by the display device with present the alternative media segment.

16. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the one or more coefficients are derived from an audio component of the unknown media segment.

17. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the one or more coefficients are derived from a video component of the unknown media segment.

18. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein identifying the unknown media segment includes:

detecting one or more media alterations associated with the unknown media segment; and

identifying the unknown media segment by comparing the one or more coefficients to known coefficients associated with known media segments stored in a second reference database, wherein the second reference database is different from the first reference database.

19. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the trigger signal is configured to cause the alternative media segment to replace a portion of the unknown media segment.

20. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 15 , wherein the trigger signal is configured to cause the alternative media segment to be presented over the media being presented by a display device.
