Abstract

Inferential analysis includes: assessing risk of a cyber security failure in a computer network of an entity, using a computer agent configured to collect information from at least one accessible Internet elements, automatically determining, based on the assessed risk, a change or a setting to at least one element of policy criteria of a cyber security policy; and automatically recommending, based on the assessed risk, a computer network change to reduce the assessed risk.

Claims (32)

1. A method, comprising:

assessing risk of a cyber security failure in a computer network of an entity, using a computer agent configured to collect information from at least one accessible Internet elements, wherein the assessing of the risk comprises:

determining circumstantial or indirect information that is indicative of the entity at least in part by inferring that the collected information relates to the entity based on an inferential analysis; and

determining a certainty level that the circumstantial or indirect information pertains to the entity, wherein an impact of analysis of the circumstantial or indirect information in assessing the risk of the cyber security failure is determined based on the certainty level;

automatically determining, based on the assessed risk, a computer network change to reduce the assessed risk; and

causing a recommendation that is generated based at least in part on the computer network change to be provided over a network to the entity.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the analysis of the circumstantial or indirect information is weighted based on the certainty level.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein a circumstantial score is generated based on the analysis of the circumstantial or indirect information, and wherein the circumstantial score is weighted based on the certainty level.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining a change in the certainty level.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the impact of the analysis of the circumstantial or indirect information is changed in response to determining the change in the certainty level.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising flagging the entity for additional review based on the certainty level.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the circumstantial or indirect information is ignored based on the certainty level.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein assessing the risk of the cyber security failure comprises assessing risk of a cyber-attack.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein assessing the risk of the cyber security failure comprises assessing risk of a privacy incident.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computer agent is configured to periodically collect information over time.

11. A system, comprising:

a memory; and

one or more hardware processors configured to:

assess risk of a cyber security failure in a computer network of an entity, using a computer agent configured to collect information from at least one accessible Internet elements, wherein the assessing of the risk comprises:

determining circumstantial or indirect information that is indicative of the entity at least in part by inferring that the collected information relates to the entity based on an inferential analysis; and

determining a certainty level that the circumstantial or indirect information pertains to the entity, wherein an impact of analysis of the circumstantial or indirect information in assessing the risk of the cyber security failure is determined based on the certainty level;

automatically determine, based on the assessed risk, a computer network change to reduce the assessed risk; and

causing a recommendation that is generated based at least in part on the computer network change to be provided over a network to the entity.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the analysis of the circumstantial or indirect information is weighted based on the certainty level.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein a circumstantial score is generated based on the analysis of the circumstantial or indirect information, and wherein the circumstantial score is weighted based on the certainty level.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more hardware processors are further configured to determine a change in the certainty level.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the impact of the analysis of the circumstantial or indirect information is changed in response to determining the change in the certainty level.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more hardware processors are further configured to flag the entity for additional review based on the certainty level.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the circumstantial or indirect information is ignored based on the certainty level.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein assessing the risk of the cyber security failure comprises assessing risk of a cyber-attack.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein assessing the risk of the cyber security failure comprises assessing risk of a privacy incident.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the computer agent is configured to periodically collect information over time.
