Abstract

A distributed cloud-based storage system, where the distributed cloud-based storage system includes: receiving, by one or more storage controller applications of the cloud-based storage system, one or more storage operations; storing, among one or more cloud computing instances of the cloud-based storage system, the one or more storage operations; and distributing, among one or more cloud computing instances within respective one or more cloud computing environments within distinct geographic regions, one or more of the one or more storage operations.

Claims (34)

1 - 20 . (canceled)

21 . A method comprising:

for a cloud-based storage system having a first tier and a second tier of cloud-based storage, determining that data that was lost at a virtual drive of the first tier is not retrievable from another virtual drive of the first tier or from the second tier; and

based on the determination, reconstructing the data using portions of the data retrieved from other virtual drives of the first tier.

22 . The method of claim 21 , further comprising:

storing at a first cloud computing instance of the first tier of cloud storage, by one or more storage controller applications, data associated with one or more storage operations, wherein the cloud storage is part of a cloud-based storage system; and

replicating the data among one or more additional cloud computing instances of the first tier of cloud storage within one or more cloud computing environments.

23 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the second tier of cloud storage of the cloud-based storage system is common storage for each of the one or more cloud computing instances within the respective one or more cloud computing environments.

24 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the first tier of cloud storage has one or more better performance characteristics than the second tier of cloud storage.

25 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the one or more cloud computing environments are at distinct geographic regions.

26 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the one or more cloud computing environments are provided by one or more distinct cloud services providers.

27 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the one or more cloud computing instances of the first tier of storage of the cloud-based storage system store a complete version of a dataset for a client computing device or client application.

28 . The method of claim 27 , wherein the respective cloud computing instances within the one or more cloud computing environments store a subset of the complete version of the dataset for the client computing device or client application.

29 . A cloud-based storage system including:

a plurality of cloud computing environments, each cloud computing environment comprising one or more cloud computing instances providing a first tier of cloud storage for each respective cloud computing environment of the plurality of cloud computing environments;

one or more cloud computing instances providing a second tier of cloud storage; and

one or more storage controller applications for each respective cloud computing environment, each storage controller application executing in a cloud computing instance, wherein the one or more storage controller applications are configured to:

for a cloud-based storage system having a first tier and a second tier of cloud-based storage, determine that data that was lost at a virtual drive of the first tier is not retrievable from another virtual drive of the first tier or from the second tier; and

based on the determination, reconstruct the data using portions of the data retrieved from other virtual drives of the first tier.

30 . The cloud-based storage system of claim 29 , wherein the one or more storage controller applications are configured to:

store at a first cloud computing instance of the first tier of cloud storage, by one or more storage controller applications, data associated with one or more storage operations, wherein the cloud storage is part of a cloud-based storage system; and

replicate the data among one or more additional cloud computing instances of the first tier of cloud storage within one or more cloud computing environments.

31 . The cloud-based storage system of claim 29 , wherein the one or more cloud computing instances of at least one of the first tier or second tier of cloud storage provide solid-state storage.

32 . The cloud-based storage system of claim 29 , wherein the second tier of cloud storage of the cloud-based storage system is common storage for each of the one or more cloud computing instances within the respective one or more cloud computing environments.

33 . The cloud-based storage system of claim 30 , wherein the first tier of cloud storage has one or more better performance characteristics than the second tier of cloud storage.

34 . The cloud-based storage system of claim 30 , wherein the cloud computing environments are at distinct geographic regions, each distinct geographic region corresponds to a distinct availability zone for a particular cloud services provider.

35 . The cloud-based storage system of claim 30 , wherein the one or more cloud computing environments are provided by one or more distinct cloud services providers.

36 . The cloud-based storage system of claim 29 , wherein the one or more cloud computing instances of the cloud-based storage system store a complete version of a dataset for a client computing device or client application.

37 . The cloud-based storage system of claim 36 , wherein the respective cloud computing instances within the one or more cloud computing environments store a subset of the complete version of the dataset for the client computing device or client application.

38 . A computer program product disposed on a non-transitory computer readable medium, the computer program product including computer program instructions that, when executed by a computer processor, cause the computer processor to carry out the steps of:

for a cloud-based storage system having a first tier and a second tier of cloud-based storage, determining that data that was lost at a virtual drive of the first tier is not retrievable from another virtual drive of the first tier or from the second tier; and

based on the determination, reconstructing the data using portions of the data retrieved from other virtual drives of the first tier.

39 . The computer program product of claim 38 , wherein the first tier of cloud storage has one or more better performance characteristics than the second tier of cloud storage.

40 . The method of claim 27 wherein each distinct geographic region corresponds to a distinct availability zone for a particular cloud services provider.
