Abstract

A method for configuring a multi-mode antenna system is provided. The method includes obtaining channel selection data indicating the antenna system is tuned to a first channel of a plurality of channels. The method includes configuring the antenna system in at least one operating mode of a plurality of operating modes, with each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes having a distinct radiation pattern. The method includes obtaining data indicative of a channel quality indicator for the at least one operating mode. The method includes determining a selected operating mode for the multi-mode antenna system for the first channel of the plurality of channels based, at least in part, on the data indicative of the channel quality indicator. The method includes configuring the antenna system in the selected operating mode when the multi-mode antenna system is tuned to the first channel.

20 . A method of configuring a multi-mode antenna system communicatively coupled to a device, the method comprising:

tuning, by a controller of the multi-mode antenna system, the multi-mode antenna system to a channel of a plurality of channels;

configuring, by the controller of the multi-mode antenna system, the multi-mode antenna in each operating mode of a plurality of operating modes while the multi-mode antenna system is tuned to the channel of the plurality of channels, each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes having a distinct radiation pattern;

obtaining, by the controller of the multi-mode antenna system, data indicative of a channel quality indicator for each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes while the multi-mode antenna system is tuned to the channel of the plurality of channels;

generating, by the controller of the multi-mode antenna system, configuration data for the multi-mode antenna system based, at least in part, on the data indicative of the channel quality indicator for each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes while the multi-mode antenna system is tuned to the channel of the plurality of channels; and

storing, by the controller of the multi-mode antenna system, the configuration data for the multi-mode antenna system.

The method of claim 20 , wherein the data indicative of the channel quality indicator comprises at least one of a signal to noise ratio (SNR), a signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), a magnitude error ratio (MER), an error vector magnitude (EVM), a bit error rate (BER), a block error rate (BLER), and a packet error rate (PER).

22 . The method of claim 20 , further comprising:

determining, by the controller of the multi-mode antenna system, a selected operating mode for the multi-mode antenna to the channel of the plurality of channels based, at least in part, on the configuration data.

23 . The method of claim 20 , further comprising:

comparing, by the controller of the multi-mode antenna system, the obtained data indicative of the channel quality indicator for each operating mode of the plurality of operating;

generating, by the controller of the multi-mode antenna system, configuration data for the multi-mode antenna system based, at least in part, on the compared data indicative of the channel quality indicator for each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes.

24 . The method of claim 20 , further comprising:

obtaining, by the controller of the multi-mode antenna system, data indicative of a channel quality indicator for a first operating mode of the plurality of operating modes;

obtaining, by the controller of the multi-mode antenna system, data indicative of the channel quality indicator for each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes;

comparing, by the controller of the multi-mode antenna system, the obtained data indicative of the channel quality indicator for the first operating mode of the plurality of operating mode and the obtained data indicative of the channel quality indicator for each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes;

responsive to the comparison that the obtained data indicative of the channel quality indicator for the first operating mode of the plurality of operating mode is better than the obtained data indicative of the channel quality indicator for each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes, generating, by the controller of the multi-mode antenna system, a configuration data link channel to the first operating mode of the plurality of operating mode.

25 . The method of claim 20 , wherein the configuration data for the multi-mode antenna system is stored in one or more memory devices associated with the controller of the antenna system.

26 . The method of claim 20 , further comprising:

entering, by a controller of the multi-mode antenna system, a wait period after the multi-mode antenna is tuned to the channel of the plurality of channels.

27 . A multi-mode antenna system comprising:

a multi-mode antenna configurable in a plurality of operating modes, each of the plurality of operating modes having a distinct radiation pattern; and

a controller configured to perform operations, the operations comprising:

tuning, the multi-mode antenna to a channel of a plurality of channels;

configuring the multi-mode antenna in each operating mode of a plurality of operating modes while the multi-mode antenna is tuned to the channel of the plurality of channels, each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes having a distinct radiation pattern;

obtaining data indicative of a channel quality indicator for each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes while the multi-mode antenna is tuned to the channel of the plurality of channels;

generating configuration data for the multi-mode antenna system based, at least in part, on the data indicative of the channel quality indicator for each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes while the multi-mode antenna is tuned to the channel of the plurality of channels; and

storing the configuration data for the multi-mode antenna system.

28 . The multi-mode antenna system of claim 27 , wherein the multi-mode antenna comprises a driven element and a parasitic element.

29 . The multi-mode antenna system of claim 27 , wherein the operations further comprise:

determining a selected operating mode for the multi-mode antenna to the channel of the plurality of channels based, at least in part, on the configuration data.

30 . The multi-mode antenna system of claim 27 , wherein the operations further comprise:

comparing the obtained data indicative of the channel quality indicator for each operating mode of the plurality of operating;

generating configuration data for the multi-mode antenna system based, at least in part, on the compared data indicative of the channel quality indicator for each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes.

31 . The multi-mode antenna system of claim 27 , wherein the operations further comprise:

obtaining data indicative of a channel quality indicator for a first operating mode of the plurality of operating modes;

obtaining data indicative of the channel quality indicator for each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes;

comparing the obtained data indicative of the channel quality indicator for the first operating mode of the plurality of operating mode and the obtained data indicative of the channel quality indicator for each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes;

responsive to the comparison that the obtained data indicative of the channel quality indicator for the first operating mode of the plurality of operating mode is better than the obtained data indicative of the channel quality indicator for each operating mode of the plurality of operating modes, generating a configuration data link channel to the first operating mode of the plurality of operating mode.

32 . The multi-mode antenna system of claim 27 , wherein the operations further comprise

entering a wait period after the multi-mode antenna is tuned to the channel of the plurality of channels.
