Abstract

Methods, systems and devices for endometrial ablation. In accordance with a method, a working end of an RF ablation device is positioned in a patient uterus to contact endometrial tissue, the working end comprising a dielectric wall capable of non-expanded and expanded shapes. An indicator mechanism is operatively coupled to the wall and configured to indicate non-expanded and expanded shapes of the wall.

Claims (21)

1. A method for treating uterine tissue, comprising: advancing a uterine treatment member including an expandable frame into a uterus of a patient; expanding the uterine treatment member from a non-expanded configuration to an expanded configuration within the uterus by axially translating a translatable sleeve of the uterine treatment member; wherein the translatable sleeve includes an indicator mechanism providing an indication of an extent of expansion of the uterine treatment member between the non-expanded configuration and the expanded configuration based on axial movement of the indicator mechanism; providing an electrical signal to an energy delivery controller corresponding to the axial movement of the indicator mechanism with a sensor mechanism that detects axial movement of the translatable sleeve; and delivering ablative energy to the uterine treatment member with the energy delivery controller when the uterine treatment member is in the expanded configuration to ablate uterine tissue.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sensor mechanism detects a plurality of degrees of expansion of the uterine treatment member.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the sensor mechanism is configured to deliver an electrical signal to the energy delivery controller to prevent the energy delivery controller from delivering the ablative energy to the uterine treatment member when the uterine treatment member is not expanded to a threshold degree of expansion.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein an electrical signal associated with each one of the plurality of degrees of expansion provided to the energy delivery controller by the sensor corresponds to one of a plurality of RF delivery algorithms selected by the energy delivery controller.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the RF delivery algorithms include one or more different durations of treatment, voltages of treatment, and modes of energy delivery.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the indicator mechanism further comprises first and second visual indicators coupled to a proximal end of the translatable sleeve, wherein the first visual indicator indicates that the treatment may proceed, and the second visual indicator indicates that the treatment may not proceed.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the uterine treatment member includes a conformable wall at least partially surrounding an interior chamber and having a shape for positioning in a uterine cavity.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the interior chamber is fluid-tight.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the conformable wall is at least partly dielectric.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the expandable frame is positioned within the interior chamber.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the expandable frame biases the conformable wall toward the expanded configuration.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the indicator mechanism indicates expansion of the conformable wall by movement of the expandable frame.

13. A method for treating uterine tissue, comprising:

advancing a uterine treatment member including an expandable frame into a uterus of a patient, the uterine treatment member operatively coupled to an energy delivery controller for delivering ablative energy to the uterine treatment member;

expanding the uterine treatment member from a non-expanded configuration to an expanded configuration within the uterus by translating a translatable sleeve of the uterine treatment member; and

detecting axial movement of the translatable sleeve with a sensor mechanism, wherein the sensor mechanism is configured to deliver an electrical signal to the energy delivery controller to prevent the energy delivery controller from delivering the ablative energy to the uterine treatment member when the uterine treatment member is not opened to a threshold degree of expansion and permitting the energy delivery controller to deliver the ablative energy to the uterine treatment member when the uterine treatment member is opened to the threshold degree of expansion.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising delivering the ablative energy to the uterine treatment member with the energy delivery controller when the uterine treatment member is in the expanded configuration to ablate uterine tissue.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the uterine treatment member includes a conformable wall at least partially surrounding an interior chamber and having a shape for positioning in a uterine cavity.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the conformable wall is at least partly dielectric.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the expandable frame is positioned within the interior chamber.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the expandable frame biases the conformable wall toward the expanded configuration.
