Abstract

Systems and methods are described herein for a media guidance application that facilitates presenting, to a user, media assets that match a search expression by generating for display media asset identifiers corresponding to media assets that are scheduled for transmission to a plurality of users during a specific time interval. The media asset identifiers corresponding to media assets that match the search expression are distinguished from media asset identifiers that correspond to media assets that do not match the search expression. Furthermore, media asset identifiers corresponding to media assets that match the search expression are distinguished from each other based on an attribute of each media asset that matches the search expression.

Claims (51)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, from a user, a search expression for searching a genre of media assets;

performing a search for the genre of media assets using the received search expression at a future time interval, wherein the future time interval is selected based on a pattern of time intervals during which the user previously consumed media assets;

retrieving a value associated with a counter to determine if any media assets are identified based on the search performed;

determining, based on the retrieved value, that a plurality of media assets are identified based on the search performed; and

displaying visually distinguishable identifiers for the identified plurality of media assets, wherein the identifiers for a first subset of the media assets, from the plurality of media assets, that match the genre associated with the search expression are visually distinguished from a second subset of the media assets, from the plurality of media assets, that do not match the genre associated with the search expression.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

displaying an option for user selection to select the future time interval for searching using the received search expression; and

performing the search for the genre of media assets using the received search expression upon receiving an approval of the displayed option.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

displaying an option for user selection to select the future time interval for searching using the received search expression;

receiving a command to navigate to a different time interval instead of the future time interval associated with the displayed option; and

in response to receiving the command to navigate to the different time interval, performing the search for the genre of media assets using the received search expression at the received different time interval.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining, based on the retrieved value, that a plurality of media assets are identified based on the search performed further comprises:

storing media asset identifiers associated with media assets identified based on the search performed;

determining a match between the stored media asset identifiers and the received search expression;

incrementing the value associated with the counter for each identified match;

retrieving the incremented value; and

in response to the retrieved incremented value corresponding to at least one match, determining that at least one media asset, from the plurality of media assets, is identified based on the search performed.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the media asset identifiers are stored in a data structure.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein, displaying visually distinguishable identifiers comprises visually distinguishing each separate genre by an indicator, wherein the indicator is selected from a group consisting of colors, shading, hashing, symbols, and alpha-numeric text.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the indicator is randomly assigned to each separate genre.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the genre is related to any one of actor, title, and director.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the visually distinguishable identifiers are displayed in an arranged order according to their respective source.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the identifiers for the first subset of the media assets are displayed in a different shape than the identifiers for the second subset of the media assets.

11. A system comprising:

communication circuitry configured to receive, from a user, a search expression for searching a genre of media assets;

control circuitry configured to:

performing a search for the genre of media assets using the received search expression at a future time interval, wherein the future time interval is selected based on a pattern of time intervals during which the user previously consumed media assets;

retrieving a value associated with a counter to determine if any media assets are identified based on the search performed;

determining, based on the retrieved value, that a plurality of media assets are identified based on the search performed; and

displaying visually distinguishable identifiers for the identified plurality of media assets, wherein the identifiers for a first subset of the media assets, from the plurality of media assets, that match the genre associated with the search expression are visually distinguished from a second subset of the media assets, from the plurality of media assets, that do not match the genre associated with the search expression.

12. The system of claim 11 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to:

display an option for user selection to select the future time interval for searching using the received search expression; and

perform the search for the genre of media assets using the received search expression upon receiving an approval of the displayed option.

13. The system of claim 11 , further comprising, the control circuitry configured to:

display an option for user selection to select the future time interval for searching using the received search expression;

receive a command to navigate to a different time interval instead of the future time interval associated with the displayed option; and

in response to receiving the command to navigate to the different time interval, perform the search for the genre of media assets using the received search expression at the received different time interval.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein determining, based on the retrieved value, that a plurality of media assets are identified based on the search performed further comprises, the control circuitry configured to:

store media asset identifiers associated with media assets identified based on the search performed;

determine a match between the stored media asset identifiers and the received search expression;

increment the value associated with the counter for each identified match;

retrieve the incremented value; and

in response to the retrieved incremented value corresponding to at least one match, determine that at least one media asset, from the plurality of media assets, is identified based on the search performed.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the media asset identifiers are stored by the control circuitry in a data structure.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein, displaying visually distinguishable identifiers comprises, the control circuitry configured to visually distinguish each separate genre by an indicator, wherein the indicator is selected by the control circuitry from a group consisting of colors, shading, hashing, symbols, and alpha-numeric text.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the indicator is randomly assigned by the control circuitry to each separate genre.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the genre is related to any one of actor, title, and director.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the visually distinguishable identifiers are displayed by the control circuity in an arranged order according to their respective source.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the identifiers for the first subset of the media assets are displayed by the control circuitry in a different shape than the identifiers for the second subset of the media assets.
