Abstract

A remote temperature monitoring system includes a first unit operatively connected to one or more temperature sensors for sensing the temperature of one or more materials or food items being cooked or heated. The first unit transmits the sensed temperature to a second unit that is located remotely from the first unit during heating. The second unit is programmable with the desired temperature and/or heating parameters of the item. By monitoring the temperature status of the item over time, the system determines when the food has reached the desired temperature or degree of cooking, and notifies the user.

Claims (58)

1 . A temperature monitoring system, comprising:

a temperature sensing device configured to be inserted into a food item to sense an internal temperature of the food item; and

a software application configured to be executed by a control unit, the control unit including a display, a processor, a memory, a wireless controller, and a user interface, the control unit configured to be in wireless communication with the temperature sensing device, the software application including instructions that, when executed, cause the control unit to:

receive temperature data from the temperature sensing device, the temperature data indicating a current internal temperature of the food item;

receive, via the user interface, at least one user-selectable data entry identifying a cooking profile associated with the food item, the cooking profile including one or more of a type of the food item, a cut of the food item, a thickness of the food item, a manner of cooking, and a preferred cooking graduation of the food item;

determine a target temperature of the food item based on one or more of the type of the food item, the cut of the food item, the manner of cooking, and the preferred cooking graduation of the food item indicated by the cooking profile;

determine an estimated finish time at which the temperature data will reach the target temperature;

present the temperature data and one or more of the type of the food item, the cut of the food item, the preferred cooking graduation of the food item, the target temperature, the manner of cooking, and the estimated finish time concurrently on the display; and

generate an alert in response to the temperature data reaching the target temperature.

2 . The temperature monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the control unit to:

store the temperature data and one or more of the type of the food item, the cut of the food item, the preferred cooking graduation of the food item, the target temperature, the manner of cooking, and the estimated finish time in an event log; and

generate a second alert at a predetermined amount of time before the estimated finish time is reached.

3 . The temperature monitoring system of claim 2 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the control unit to use information stored in the event log to continue presenting one or more of the type of the food item, the cut of the food item, the preferred cooking graduation of the food item, the target temperature, the manner of cooking, and the estimated finish time on the display subsequent to a loss of connectivity between the temperature sensing device and the control unit.

4 . The temperature monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the control unit is a smartphone.

5 . The temperature monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the user interface is a touch screen.

6 . The temperature monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the wireless communication between the temperature sensing device and the control unit is established using one or more of a Bluetooth protocol, a WiFi protocol, radio frequency, and infrared.

7 . The temperature monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the cooking profile is selected from among a plurality of predetermined cooking profiles stored on or accessible via the control unit.

8 . The temperature monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the control unit to determine the target temperature of the food item based on the thickness of the food item.

9 . The temperature monitoring system of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the control unit to present the thickness of the food item on the display concurrently with the temperature data and one or more of the type of the food item, the cut of the food item, the preferred cooking graduation of the food item, the target temperature, the manner of cooking, and the estimated finish time.

10 . A temperature monitoring system, comprising:

a temperature sensing device configured to be inserted into a food item to sense an internal temperature of the food item; and

a software application configured to be executed by a control unit, the control unit including a display, a processor, a memory, a wireless controller, and a user interface, the control unit configured to be in wireless communication with the temperature sensing device, the software application including instructions that, when executed, cause the control unit to:

receive temperature data from the temperature sensing device, the temperature data indicating a current internal temperature of the food item;

receive, via the user interface, at least one user-selectable data entry identifying a cooking profile associated with the food item, the cooking profile including one or more of a type of the food item, a cut of the food item, a manner of cooking, and a preferred cooking graduation of the food item;

determine a current cooking graduation of the food item based on the temperature data, the type of the food item, the manner of cooking, and the cut of the food item;

determine a target temperature of the food item based on the type of the food item, the cut of the food item, the manner of cooking, and the preferred cooking graduation of the food item indicated by the cooking profile;

determine an estimated finish time at which the temperature data will reach the target temperature;

present the temperature data and one or more of the type of the food item, the cut of the food item, the current cooking graduation of the food item, the preferred cooking graduation of the food item, the target temperature, the manner of cooking, and the estimated finish time concurrently on the display; and

generate an alert in response to the temperature data reaching the target temperature.

11 . A temperature monitoring system, comprising:

a temperature sensing device configured to be inserted into a food item to sense an internal temperature of the food item; and

a software application configured to be executed by a control unit, the control unit including a display, a processor, a memory, a wireless controller, and a user interface, the control unit configured to be in wireless communication with the temperature sensing device, the software application including instructions that, when executed, cause the control unit to:

receive temperature data from the temperature sensing device, the temperature data indicating a current internal temperature of the food item;

receive, via the user interface, at least one user-selectable data entry identifying a cooking profile associated with the food item, the cooking profile including one or more of a type of the food item, a cut of the food item, a thickness of the food item, a manner of cooking, and a preferred cooking graduation of the food item;
