Abstract

An abrasive waterjet system in accordance with an embodiment of the present technology includes a cutting head, a catcher downstream from the cutting head, and a conveyance configured to carry slurry including abrasive material and liquid collected from the catcher toward the cutting head. The cutting head includes a jet-forming orifice and a mixing chamber downstream from the jet-forming orifice. The cutting head also includes a slurry inlet through which the mixing chamber receives slurry including abrasive material and liquid collected from the catcher. The abrasive waterjet system can be configured for substantially closed-loop recycling of wet abrasive material. This can be useful, for example, to increase abrasive material utilization efficiency and to decrease abrasive material disposal costs. These and/or other benefits may be realized both in the context of low pressure abrasive waterjet systems and in the context of high pressure abrasive waterjet systems.

Claims (33)

1. An abrasive liquid jet cutting system, comprising:

a cutting head configured to emit a jet, including a slurry of abrasive material and liquid, to cut through a workpiece;

a catcher downstream from the cutting head and configured to receive the slurry and fines, wherein the fines include abrasive fines from the abrasive material and/or workpiece fines from a kerf in the workpiece;

a fluidizer operably associated with the catcher and configured to inject liquid into the abrasive material and the fines received by the catcher to fluidize the abrasive material and the fines received by the catcher;

a holding tank configured to receive at least a portion of the slurry and the fines from the catcher and separate at least a portion of the fines from the slurry; and

a conduit configured to return at least a portion of the slurry from the holding tank to the cutting head.

2. The abrasive liquid jet cutting system of claim 1 wherein the holding tank includes a fines separator configured to separate at least the portion of the fines from the slurry.

3. The abrasive liquid jet cutting system of claim 2 wherein the fines separator includes a hydrocyclone.

4. The abrasive liquid jet cutting system of claim 2 wherein the fines separator includes a screen.

5. The abrasive liquid jet cutting system of claim 1 , further comprising a pump positioned downstream from the catcher and upstream from the holding tank, wherein the pump is configured to move the slurry and the fines from the catcher to the holding tank.

6. The abrasive liquid jet cutting system of claim 1 wherein the cutting head includes a slurry inlet, and wherein the conduit is configured to return at least the portion of the slurry to the cutting head via the slurry inlet.

7. The abrasive liquid jet cutting system of claim 1 wherein the cutting head includes a mixing chamber, a jet forming orifice that provides the liquid to the mixing chamber, and a slurry inlet that provides at least the portion of the slurry to the mixing chamber via the conduit.

8. The abrasive liquid jet cutting system of claim 1 , further comprising the workpiece.

9. The abrasive liquid jet cutting system of claim 1 wherein the liquid is water and the jet is an abrasive water jet including the abrasive material and the water.

10. A method for operating an abrasive liquid jet cutting system, the method comprising:

directing a jet, including a slurry of abrasive material and liquid, from a cutting head toward a workpiece;

receiving the slurry and fines in a catcher, wherein the fines include abrasive fines from the abrasive material and/or workpiece fines from a kerf in the workpiece;

injecting, via a fluidizer, fluid into the abrasive material and the fines received by the catcher to fluidize the abrasive material and the fines received by the catcher;

moving at least a portion of the slurry and the fines from the catcher to a holding tank;

separating at least a portion of the fines from the slurry within the holding tank; and

supplying at least a portion of the slurry from the holding tank to the cutting head.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein separating at least a portion of the fines from the slurry includes separating at least the portion of the fines from the slurry using a fines separator combined with the holding tank.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the fines separator is positioned within the holding tank.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein separating at least the portion of the fines from the slurry includes separating at least the portion of the fines from the slurry using a hydrocyclone positioned within the holding tank.

14. The method of claim 10 wherein separating at least the portion of the fines from the slurry includes separating at least the portion of the fines from the slurry using a screen positioned within the holding tank.

15. The method of claim 10 wherein the cutting head includes a jet-forming orifice, a mixing chamber downstream from the jet-forming orifice, and a slurry inlet, and wherein supplying slurry includes supplying slurry to the mixing chamber via the slurry inlet.

16. The method of claim 10 wherein supplying at least a portion of the slurry to the cutting head includes supplying at least the portion of the slurry to the cutting head at a slurry flowrate, and wherein the method further comprises:

detecting a concentration of abrasive material within the portion of the slurry supplied to the cutting head; and

adjusting the slurry flowrate based at least in part on the detected concentration.

17. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

moving the cutting head relative to the workpiece; and

adjusting a rate of movement of the cutting head based at least in part on a detected and/or expected concentration of abrasive material within at least the portion of the slurry supplied to the cutting head.

18. The method of claim 10 wherein the liquid is water, wherein the jet is an abrasive water jet including the abrasive material and the water, and wherein the method further comprises entraining the abrasive material within the water to form the abrasive water jet.
