Abstract

Systems and methods for generating a surgical plan for altering an abnormal bone using a generic normal bone model are discussed. For example, a system for planning a surgery on an abnormal bone can include a model receiver module configured to receive a generic normal bone model. The generic normal bone model, such as a parametric model derived from statistical shape data, can include a data set representing a normal bone having an anatomical origin comparable to the abnormal bone. An input interface can be configured to receive an abnormal bone representation including a data set representing the abnormal bone. A surgical planning module can include a registration module configured to register the generic normal bone model to the abnormal bone representation by creating a registered generic model. A surgical plan formation module can be configured to identify one or more abnormal regions of the abnormal bone using the registered generic model.

Claims (35)

1 - 24 . (canceled)

25 . A method for performing a surgical procedure on a patient bone of a patient, comprising:

receiving, by a computer system, a representation of the patient bone;

receiving, by the computer system, a target bone model, wherein the target bone model is generated from a set of image data of bones corresponding to the patient bone from a group of subjects having normal bone anatomy;

registering, by the computer system, the representation of the patient bone and the target bone model;

based on the representation of the patient bone registered to the target bone model, determining, by the computer system, a region of the patient bone that comprises a morphological deviation based on a level of disconformity between the patient bone and a corresponding region of the target bone model;

determining, by the computer system, whether the level of disconformity violates a threshold; and

in response to the level of disconformity violating the threshold, guiding, by the computer system, a surgical tool to alter the morphological deviation to cause the patient bone to correspond to the target bone model.

26 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the representation of the patient bone comprises at least one of a medical image, a point cloud, a parametric model, or a data set representing the patient bone.

27 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the target bone model comprises at least one of a parametric model, a statistical model, a shape-based model, a volumetric model, an elastic model, a geometric spine model, or a finite element model.

28 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the set of image data comprise at least one of x-ray images, ultrasound images, computed tomography (CT) images, magnetic resonance (MR) images, positron emission tomography (PET) images, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images, or arthrogram images.

29 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the group of subjects from which the set of image data is generated have at least one of a common age, a common gender, a common ethnicity, a common body size, or one or more other common relevant physical or demographic features with the patient.

30 . The method of claim 25 , further comprising:

displaying, on a user interface by the computer system, visual indicia on the representation of the patient bone, wherein the visual indicia indicate the morphological deviation and an amount of bone to be removed.

31 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the target bone model represents a desired postoperative shape or appearance of the patient bone.

32 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the surgical tool comprises a robotic surgical tool.

33 . The method of claim 25 , wherein the patient bone comprises a hip bone and the morphological deviation comprises an abnormal acetabular rim.

34 . A computer system for use in performing a surgical procedure on a patient bone of a patient, the computer system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory, the memory storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

receive a representation of the patient bone;

receive a target bone model, wherein the target bone model is generated from a set of image data of bones corresponding to the patient bone from a group of subjects having normal bone anatomy;

register the representation of the patient bone and the target bone model;

based on the representation of the patient bone registered to the target bone model, determine a region of the patient bone that comprises a morphological deviation based on a level of disconformity between the patient bone and a corresponding region of the target bone model;

determine whether the level of disconformity violates a threshold; and

in response to the level of disconformity violating the threshold, guide a surgical tool to alter the morphological deviation to cause the patient bone to correspond to the target bone model.

35 . The computer system of claim 34 , wherein the representation of the patient bone comprises at least one of a medical image, a point cloud, a parametric model, or a data set representing the patient bone.

36 . The computer system of claim 34 , wherein the target bone model comprises at least one of a parametric model, a statistical model, a shape-based model, a volumetric model, an elastic model, a geometric spine model, or a finite element model.

37 . The computer system of claim 34 , wherein the set of image data comprise at least one of x-ray images, ultrasound images, computed tomography (CT) images, magnetic resonance (MR) images, positron emission tomography (PET) images, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images, or arthrogram images.

38 . The computer system of claim 34 , wherein the group of subjects from which the set of image data is generated have at least one of a common age, a common gender, a common ethnicity, a common body size, or one or more other common relevant physical or demographic features with the patient.

39 . The computer system of claim 34 , wherein the memory stores further instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

display, via a user interface, visual indicia on the representation of the patient bone, wherein the visual indicia indicate the morphological deviation and an amount of bone to be removed.

40 . The computer system of claim 34 , wherein the target bone model represents a desired postoperative shape or appearance of the patient bone.

41 . The computer system of claim 34 , wherein the surgical tool comprises a robotic surgical tool.

42 . The computer system of claim 34 , wherein the patient bone comprises a hip bone and the morphological deviation comprises an abnormal acetabular rim.
