Abstract

A mask system for delivery of respiratory therapy to a patient includes a nares portion and a mouth portion and an inlet conduit connected to at least one of the nares portion and the mouth portion to deliver the pressurized, breathable gas. The mask system is adapted to selectively utilize the nares portion and/or the mouth portion in a first mode utilizing both the nares portion and the mouth portion, and in a second mode utilizing the nares portion and not utilizing the mouth portion.

Claims (23)

1 . A mask system for delivery of respiratory therapy to a patient, the mask system comprising:

a nares sealing portion configured to form a seal with an underside of the patient's nose and comprising a nasal opening configured to be aligned with one of the patient's nares in use;

a mouth sealing portion configured to form a seal around the patient's mouth and comprising a mouth opening configured to be aligned with the patient's mouth in use, at least a portion of the nares sealing portion being located superior to the mouth sealing portion; and

an anterior surface with an air inlet opening configured to be coupled to a connector and/or an air delivery conduit, a plenum being bound by the anterior surface, the mouth sealing portion, and the nares sealing portion, the plenum being configured to receive a pressurized gas through the air inlet opening and discharge the pressurized gas through the mouth opening and the nasal opening; and

a stiffening structure that is attached to the anterior surface, the stiffening structure comprising a main body and a plurality of connectors extending laterally outward from the main body,

wherein the main body of the stiffening structure comprises a central aperture that is sized so that the air inlet opening and a portion of the anterior surface surrounding the air inlet opening remain exposed through the central aperture,

wherein the main body of the stiffening structure is positioned inferior to an anterior part of the nares sealing portion configured to receive the patient's nose tip, and

wherein the mouth sealing portion includes a silicone cushion.

2 . The mask system according to claim 1 , further comprising a double elbow connector adapted to connect to the air inlet opening.

3 . The mask system according to claim 1 , further comprising a swivel ring in the air inlet opening.

4 . The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the connectors of the stiffening structure are configured to be connected to a positioning and stabilizing structure.

5 . The mask system according to claim 4 , wherein the positioning and stabilizing structure includes upper side straps configured to be routed between the patient's eyes and ears and lower side straps configured to be routed under the patient's ears.

6 . The mask system according to claim 5 , wherein the positioning and stabilizing structure includes a crown strap portion configured to be positioned in use over the crown of the patient's head.

7 . The mask system according to claim 6 , wherein the positioning and stabilizing structure includes a rear strap portion connected to the upper side straps above the patient's ears and configured to angle downward along the sides of the patient's head in use to capture the occiput of the patient's head.

8 . The mask system according to claim 7 , wherein the rear strap portion is configured to be so that the rear strap portion is connected to the lower side strap below the occiput of the patient's head in use.

9 . The mask system according to claim 1 , wherein the nares sealing portion comprises one of pillows, prongs, a membrane seal, or a nasal chamber.

10 . The mask system according to claim 9 , wherein the nares sealing portion is structured to extend or curve outwardly from a supporting wall defining an air path into the nares sealing portion.

11 . The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the nares sealing portion is located superior to the stiffening structure.

12 . The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the stiffening structure forms a ring around the air inlet opening in the anterior surface.

13 . The mask system of claim 12 , wherein a superior side of the stiffening structure is configured to be located between the patient's mouth and the patient's nose in use.

14 . The mask system of claim 1 , wherein the mask system is in the form of an oronasal mask.

15 . The mask system of claim 1 , further comprising the connector configured to be coupled to the air inlet opening, the connector being configured to engage the air inlet opening without engaging the stiffening structure.

16 . The mask system of claim 1 further comprising the air delivery conduit configured to be coupled to the air inlet opening, the air delivery conduit being configured to engage the air inlet opening without engaging the stiffening structure.
