Abstract

A gaming system compatible with patron-controlled portable electronic devices, such as smart phones or tablet computers, is described. The gaming system can include electronic gaming machines that are compatible to receive both virtual ticket vouchers and printed ticket vouchers that are redeemable for credits on the electronic gaming machines. Information associated with a virtual ticket voucher can be stored on a patron-controlled portable electronic device and then can be wireless transmitted to the electronic gaming machines. The electronic gaming machines can be configured to issue virtual ticket vouchers and printed ticket vouchers that can be redeemed for cash or additional game play on another electronic gaming machine. In one embodiment, the electronic gaming machine can be configured to issue a virtual ticket voucher to a patron-controlled portable electronic device.

a wireless communication interface, and

a network interface;

a processor that is distinct from the game controller of the electronic gaming machine; and

a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

receive, via the wireless communication interface, player identification data to be associated with the electronic gaming machine,

receive, via the network interface, first data associated with an amount of funds associated with the player identification data, and

communicate, to the game controller of the electronic gaming machine and via the first gaming communication protocol interface, second data that results in the game controller of the electronic gaming machine increasing a meter of the electronic gaming machine, wherein the increase of the meter of the electronic gaming machine occurs independent of any physical item associated with any monetary value being received via a payment acceptor of the electronic gaming machine.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the player identification data comprises player tracking card data.

3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the player tracking card data is associated with a loyalty program.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to receive, from a mobile device and via the wireless communication interface, data associated with a cashless wagering account accessible via a mobile device application of the mobile device.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor responsive to a requested amount of funds from the cashless wagering account being approved, cause the processor to communicate, to the game controller of the electronic gaming machine and via the first gaming communication protocol interface, third data that results in the game controller of the electronic gaming machine increasing the meter of the electronic gaming machine.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein increasing the meter of the electronic gaming machine comprises causing the game controller of the electronic gaming machine to increase a credit balance of the electronic gaming machine.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein increasing the meter of the electronic gaming machine comprises increasing a soft meter of the electronic gaming machine.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first data is received from a bonusing sever.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to block data communicated, via a payment acceptor communication link of the electronic gaming machine, from the payment acceptor of the electronic gaming machine to the game controller of the electronic gaming machine.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the device comprises a retrofit device.

11. A device comprising:

a communication interface comprising:

a first gaming communication protocol interface connectable to a gaming communication protocol interface of a game controller of an electronic gaming machine,

a second gaming communication protocol interface connectable to a gaming communication protocol interface of a component of a gaming establishment player tracking system,

a wireless communication interface, and

a network interface;

a processor that is distinct from the game controller of the electronic gaming machine; and

a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions that, when executed by the processor following a receipt, via the wireless communication interface, of player identification data and an association of the player identification data with the electronic gaming machine, cause the processor to:

receive, via the network interface, first data associated with an amount of funds, and

communicate, to the game controller of the electronic gaming machine and via the first gaming communication protocol interface, second data that results in the game controller of the electronic gaming machine decreasing a meter of the electronic gaming machine, wherein the decrease of the meter of the electronic gaming machine occurs independent of any printing, by a ticket printer of the electronic gaming machine, of any ticket voucher associated with any monetary value.

12. The device of claim 11 , wherein decreasing the meter of the electronic gaming machine comprises causing the game controller of the electronic gaming machine to decrease a credit balance of the electronic gaming machine.

13. The device of claim 11 , wherein decreasing the meter of the electronic gaming machine comprises decreasing a soft meter of the electronic gaming machine.

14. The device of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the player identification data and the first data is accessible via a mobile device application of a mobile device and received, via the wireless communication interface, from the mobile device.

15. The device of claim 11 , wherein the memory device stores a plurality of further instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to block data communicated, via a ticket printer communication link of the electronic gaming machine, from the ticket printer of the electronic gaming machine to the game controller of the electronic gaming machine.

16. The device of claim 11 , wherein the device comprises a retrofit device.

17. A method of operating a device comprising a processor and a communication interface comprising a first gaming communication protocol interface connectable to a gaming communication protocol interface of a game controller of an electronic gaming machine, a second gaming communication protocol interface connectable to a gaming communication protocol interface of a component of a gaming establishment player tracking system, a wireless communication interface, and a network interface, the method comprising:

receiving, via the wireless communication interface, player identification data to be associated with the electronic gaming machine,

receiving, via the network interface, first data associated with an amount of funds associated with the player identification data, and

communicating, to the game controller of the electronic gaming machine and via the first gaming communication protocol interface, second data that results in the game controller of the electronic gaming machine increasing a meter of the electronic gaming machine, wherein the increase of the meter of the electronic gaming machine occurs independent of any physical item associated with any monetary value being received via a payment acceptor of the electronic gaming machine and the processor is distinct from the game controller of the electronic gaming machine.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the player identification data comprises player tracking card data.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the player tracking card data is associated with a loyalty program.

20. The method of claim 17 , further comprising receiving, from a mobile device and via the wireless communication interface, data associated with a cashless wagering account accessible via a mobile device application of the mobile device.

21. The method of claim 20 , further comprising, responsive to a requested amount of funds from the cashless wagering account being approved, communicating, to the game controller of the electronic gaming machine and via the first gaming communication protocol interface, third data that results in the game controller of the electronic gaming machine increasing the meter of the electronic gaming machine.
