Abstract

The present disclosure includes apparatuses and methods related to microcode instructions indicating instruction types. One example apparatus comprises a memory storing a set of microcode instructions. Each microcode instruction of the set can comprise a first field comprising a number of control data units, and a second field comprising a number of type select data units. Each microcode instruction of the set can have a particular instruction type defined by a value of the number of type select data units, and particular functions corresponding to the number of control data units are variable based on the particular instruction type.

Claims (31)

1. A processor in memory (PIM) device, comprising:

one or more memory arrays;

one or more controllers coupled with the one or more memory arrays, and configured to cause the PIM device to:

obtain an instruction comprising a set of bits;

determine a type of the instruction based at least in part on a first subset of the set of bits, the type corresponding to a respective subset of a plurality of processing operations at the PIM device; and

parse a second subset of the set of bits according to a first format, wherein the first format of the second subset of the set of bits is based at least in part on the type of the instruction; and

one or more compute components in communication with the one or more controllers and the one or more memory arrays, and configured to:

execute a first processing operation of the respective subset of the plurality of processing operations in accordance with parsing the second subset of the set of bits.

2. The PIM device of claim 1 , wherein, to execute the first processing operation, the one or more compute components are configured to:

obtain data from a first memory array of the one or more memory arrays; and

write a result of the first processing operation to circuitry coupled with the one or more compute components.

3. The PIM device of claim 2 , further comprising one or more sense amplifiers in communication with the one or more memory arrays and the one or more controllers and configured to:

determine respective logic states of a set of memory cells within the first memory array, wherein the data is obtained based at least in part on the determined respective logic states.

4. The PIM device of claim 1 , wherein the type comprises one of an arithmetic type or program control operations.

5. The PIM device of claim 1 , wherein the type of the instruction is an arithmetic type, and the second subset of the set of bits comprise first bits corresponding to operand addresses, second bits corresponding to register addresses, or both.

6. The PIM device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more memory arrays comprise dynamic random-access memory (DRAM).

7. The PIM device of claim 1 , wherein the instruction is obtained from a cache of the PIM device.

8. A method for operating a processor in memory (PIM) device, comprising:

obtaining, at one or more controllers of the PIM device, an instruction comprising a set of bits;

determining, at the one or more controllers of the PIM device, a type of the instruction based at least in part on a first subset of the set of bits, the type corresponding to a respective subset of a plurality of processing operations at the PIM device;

parsing, at the one or more controllers, a second subset of the set of bits according to a first format, wherein the first format of the second subset of the set of bits is based at least in part on the type of the instruction; and

execute, at one or more compute components of the PIM device, a first processing operation of the respective subset of the plurality of processing operations in accordance with parsing the second subset of the set of bits.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein executing the first processing operation comprises:

obtaining, at the one or more compute components, data from a first memory array of one or more memory arrays of the PIM device; and

writing, to circuitry coupled with the one or more compute components, a result of the first processing operation.

10. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

determining, at one or more sense amplifiers in communication with the one or more memory arrays and the one or more controllers, respective logic states of a set of memory cells within the first memory array, wherein the data is obtained based at least in part on the determined respective logic states.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the type comprises one of an arithmetic type or program control operations.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the type of the instruction is an arithmetic type, and the second subset of the set of bits comprise first bits corresponding to operand addresses, second bits corresponding to register addresses, or both.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the PIM device comprises one or more memory arrays coupled with the one or more compute components, and each memory array of the one or more memory arrays comprises dynamic random-access memory (DRAM).

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the instruction is obtained from a cache of the PIM device.
